To worry that I've been pronouncing this word wrong?

Tongue? How do you pronounce it? I am sat watching the football with my in laws, DH and DDs. DD2 said something about sticking her tongue out (DCs pronounce it "tung" like me) MIL corrected her and said it's pronounced "tong". I knew that was how DH pronounces it but I thought it was a regional variation, but now I'm worried I'm just wrong! Can anyone help settle this? DH and in laws are from Nottinghamshire and I'm from North Yorkshire if that helps!

I say tong too, another Yorkshire woman here. I'm surprised at all the tungs!

LemonysSnicket · 07/07/2018 23:06

Tung (w. Yorkshire btw)

Clankboing · 07/07/2018 23:06

Tongue. With an 'o'. DH says tung. But the children have copied me. So I'm right!

Jengle · 07/07/2018 23:06

Tong...never heard anyone pronounce it tung.

doctorcuntybollocks · 07/07/2018 23:07

I'm aghast at all the tungs. It grieves me when people aren't exactly like me.

Namethatchange · 07/07/2018 23:09

Tung
Tongs are for BBQs and Curls.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 07/07/2018 23:10

Yes, why is that Doctor? Does it unsettle is if someone does something different from us? Because it makes us doubt ourselves?

It must do or OP wouldn’t have posted.

Just throwing this in there though:

Chaise longue

Long not lung

Grin
marylou1977 · 07/07/2018 23:10

Tung. ( New Jersey!)

CurlyhairedAssassin · 07/07/2018 23:10

And definitely not longe!

doctorcuntybollocks · 07/07/2018 23:11

We need to fuss about the little stuff so that we don't look too long into the gaping maw of the big stuff.

I'm deep, me.

Redshoesx · 07/07/2018 23:14

Tong

xoguineas · 07/07/2018 23:15

Tung! Never heard anyone say it like tong

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 07/07/2018 23:16

I’m from london and still live in south east and I’ve heard tung however when I visit Leicester (DP family lives there) there’s a bit of an accent so it sounds like tong 🙈

MissClarke86 · 07/07/2018 23:20

I’m happy to accept I’m wrong if someone can find a word with the same spelling pattern pronounced as an “u” - if there isn’t one, it’s likely “tong” is correct and “tung” is the adapted regional form.

flourella · 07/07/2018 23:24

MissClarke86 how do you say "tonne"? Someone asked me that earlier when I said the same as you.

Maybe you do say it "t-on", but I don't, yet I do say tong.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 07/07/2018 23:24

Weighs a ton?

EllenJanethickerknickers · 07/07/2018 23:25

Or a metric tonne?

EllenJanethickerknickers · 07/07/2018 23:26

Done?

MarklahMarklah · 07/07/2018 23:27

Tung (I'm from North London). I have a friend of Welsh descent who says tong (he also says "tuth" where I'd say "tooth).

growinganotherhead · 07/07/2018 23:28

Newcastle and have never heard anyone say 'tong'. Chaise longue is French; tongue Latin.

YouTheCat · 07/07/2018 23:29

Also from Newcastle. Tong makes my teeth itch.

confusedofengland · 07/07/2018 23:35

doctor I know! Just hoping he doesn't start saying brake-fast instead of brek-fust like his parents do Shock

At least I am bringing up the Dses good & proper Wink

MissClarke86 · 07/07/2018 23:36

Ooh good call - genuinly couldnt think of any words Grin

Greyhorses · 07/07/2018 23:37

Tung here in Durham

flourella · 07/07/2018 23:38

There are loads: done, wonder, Monday, etc. I'm embarrassed I asked about it Grin

Tongue is still tong to me, though.
