To worry that I've been pronouncing this word wrong?

Tongue? How do you pronounce it? I am sat watching the football with my in laws, DH and DDs. DD2 said something about sticking her tongue out (DCs pronounce it "tung" like me) MIL corrected her and said it's pronounced "tong". I knew that was how DH pronounces it but I thought it was a regional variation, but now I'm worried I'm just wrong! Can anyone help settle this? DH and in laws are from Nottinghamshire and I'm from North Yorkshire if that helps!

MollyHuaCha · 07/07/2018 23:46

Tung every time.

AlphaBravo · 07/07/2018 23:48

Do you call your lungs longs?

Raisinshoes · 07/07/2018 23:48

If you look at the dictionary, under each word is a section indicating how a word is pronounced. Under the word ‘tongue’ is an inverted V, which indicates the O in Tongue is pronounced with an ‘uh’ sound, like sun, or duck.

So your MIL is incorrect. Her accent may make it sound like ‘oh’, but it should be ‘uh’

Tung here (Scotland), never met any Scots who pronounced it tong, my dh’s Family all said tong, he uses tung now though, tungs are for thumbs and tongs are for bums!

JimWilsonBell · 08/07/2018 00:01

Tung here, glorious Devon but I speak properly, generally, unless I've been drinking!

Tong!!!! Tong!!!!, haven't the foggiest what's that's all about!! As in Pete Tong.... thong..... bong.... ding dong.... gong....(struggling to think of more..)

Tong! Derbyshire

Charmatt · 08/07/2018 00:20

Now you've started something!

I'm from a village in South Nottinghamshire and have always pronounced it, 'tung'. My DH is from nearer Nottingham and he insists it is 'tong'. We've been married 23 years and I didn't know he pronounced it wrongly.

Oogie · 08/07/2018 00:32

Team Tung over hereGrin This reminds me of my DM who pronounces ‘Memo’ as ‘Meemo,’ and my MIL who pronounces Personalised as ‘Pers-on-alised.’

All of you in Team Tong, what do you call the things you use to curl your hair or to turn over the fish fingers and burgers?

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 08/07/2018 10:38

Tung

TheCriminalMind · 08/07/2018 10:41

Tung (Midlands).
I’ve never heard it referred to as Tong despite having family all over Grin

GoodFortuneAttendThee · 08/07/2018 10:45

Tung. Tong would be for picking up a slice of tung..

jainaproudm · 08/07/2018 10:46

Tong to me (Lancashire) and tung to OH (West Yorkshire). Drives him mad, but I don't know anyone else - from where I live - that pronounces it tung.

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 08/07/2018 10:52

West Midlands, I say tung.
However if I was talking correctly And not just casually I would say Tong

Roomba · 08/07/2018 11:06

I was brought up in and around Sheffield/Derbyshire and have heard a lot of people saying 'Tong'. My mother says Tong, she's from Goole originally though. Actually it's not quite as strong an 'o' sound as it is when the say curling 'tong' - sort of somewhere 2/3 of the way between an 'u' and an 'o', if that makes sense?

I say Tung though. Just checked and my children (Lancastrians) say Tung too. They also now think I'm a bit odd for asking them to say it!

Teggun · 08/07/2018 13:15

That's fascinating. This suggests you almost expect to have mispronounced the word and would 'correct' yourself in formal situations. The reality is that tung is the RP pronunciation and tong is the variation.

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 08/07/2018 13:53

@Teggun So, 'tung' is actually ok? I would pronounce it slightly different anyway in a formal setting as I am a brummie. (Lovely accent 🙄) I actually thought 'tong' was correct.
Thank you for the information!
So 'Monster' 'mun-ster' or 'mon-ster'?
Brummies tend to say munster. I say mon-ster

SayNoToCarrots · 08/07/2018 14:49

Monster is mon ster.
