To worry that I've been pronouncing this word wrong?

Tongue? How do you pronounce it? I am sat watching the football with my in laws, DH and DDs. DD2 said something about sticking her tongue out (DCs pronounce it "tung" like me) MIL corrected her and said it's pronounced "tong". I knew that was how DH pronounces it but I thought it was a regional variation, but now I'm worried I'm just wrong! Can anyone help settle this? DH and in laws are from Nottinghamshire and I'm from North Yorkshire if that helps!

Blaablaablaa · 08/07/2018 19:11

PurpleFlower1983 · 08/07/2018 19:20

Both DH (originally from Sussex) and I (Yorkshire) day tung. My cousins/friends in the midlands say tong.

Mxyzptlk · 08/07/2018 19:28

Hahahaha - this has been going for 14 pages! Of course it's tung.

PerfectSunflowers · 08/07/2018 19:31

I am Shock

We say Tong, like salad tongs! (Yorkshire)

StrawberrySquash · 08/07/2018 19:34

My old headmaster used to say tong. I say tung. I'd regard them as both normal variants.

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 08/07/2018 20:04

It's TONG you bunch of incorrect heathens! TUNG? .. TUNG!!! Are you all drunk 😵 I might be Manc

calzone · 08/07/2018 20:05

Tung

Tongs are clippers to pick up food.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 08/07/2018 20:13

It's tung.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 08/07/2018 20:14

I do have friends from up north who would say tong - and pronounce the "g" too.

But it's tung.

I am stunned by the amount of "tong" results. I have NEVER heard it pronounced that way in my life!

But then people don't really discuss tongues in day to day conversation...

SpeckledDot · 08/07/2018 20:28

I remember hearing it pronounced 'tung' on game of thrones and finding it weird

GobblersKnob · 08/07/2018 20:42

It's tong, though I now know all the rest of my family say tung and now I am wierded out, so thanks for that (Midlands).

Trillis · 08/07/2018 20:49

Definitely tong for me - south yorkshire. DH and MIL (south east) say tung, which sounds really weird to me. But they also use 'onvelopes' instead of 'envelopes', which I can't get my head round either!

Fluffyears · 08/07/2018 21:06

Tung, never heard it pronounced tong.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 08/07/2018 21:14

I've never said 'tung'! Definitely 'tong'.

LittleMissedTheSunshine · 08/07/2018 21:15

Tong if its mine, but if it's the stuff you buy from the meat counter it's definitely tung.

BigPinkBall · 08/07/2018 21:56

I’ve literally never ever heard anyone pronounce it tong, I’m from the North East but have relatives all over the UK and have travelled a bit, DH is from Gloucestershire and he says tuth instead of tooth and noos (to rhyme with loos) instead of news which I find really weird.

BetterEatCheese · 08/07/2018 22:02

Tung here (South east) Never heard anyone say tong. And how rude to correct you

Teggun · 08/07/2018 22:08

Tong if its mine, but if it's the stuff you buy from the meat counter it's definitely tung.

Eh?? It is the same organ . Why would you pronounce one differently from the other ..?
