To worry that I've been pronouncing this word wrong?

Tongue? How do you pronounce it? I am sat watching the football with my in laws, DH and DDs. DD2 said something about sticking her tongue out (DCs pronounce it "tung" like me) MIL corrected her and said it's pronounced "tong". I knew that was how DH pronounces it but I thought it was a regional variation, but now I'm worried I'm just wrong! Can anyone help settle this? DH and in laws are from Nottinghamshire and I'm from North Yorkshire if that helps!

Tung. ‘Tongs’ are for picking stuff up 👅

Teggun · 08/07/2018 15:05

If you say tung you use the same pronunciation as the queen Iputthescrewinthetuna Grin

And monster rather than munster would be RP too.

Pemba · 08/07/2018 16:04

I think I normally say 'tong', although was vaguely aware of other people saying 'tung'. I'm from the East Midlands. The difference is slight, does it matter?

'Tong' would seem to agree with the spelling more anyway? Although obviously English spelling is far from logical!

thecatneuterer · 08/07/2018 16:10

Tong (Sheffield). I don't think I heard tung till I went to university. Which was also the first time I heard 'arrnt' for 'aunt', rather than 'ant'. And 'aux-shun' for auction, rather than the Sheffield 'ox-shun'

Cheerbear23 · 08/07/2018 16:21

100% tong (Manchester), had no idea people would even think of pronouncing it tung!

Katedotness1963 · 08/07/2018 16:36

Tung

Gooseysgirl · 08/07/2018 16:57

MadisonAvenue · 08/07/2018 17:01

TheSultanofPingu · 08/07/2018 17:12

Tong - east midlands.

longwayoff · 08/07/2018 17:31

What??? Where have all these tongs come from? Ive never heard that. Down here in the soft South we all have tungs I'm sure. BUT ive got another linguistic query if you'll excuse my shoehorning it in here. Its what I call the London Extra Syllable. I think its local. My sister says not. ENG ER LAND. WEMB ER LEY. CONC ER ETE. LI BRER REE. There are others I cant call to mind right now. Any offers?

TooManyPaws · 08/07/2018 17:45

Tung here (RP) and Aberdeen dad. Tong from my Dudley mother.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 08/07/2018 17:48

Tung. West Miss.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 08/07/2018 17:48

Mids!

greencatbluecat · 08/07/2018 17:48

Tung. Think my grandma may have pronounced it tong. She was from the north but lived all over the place.

CherryPavlova · 08/07/2018 17:50

Tung. Tongs are something for handling hot coals or sugar cubes.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 08/07/2018 17:51

We have the extra syllable in the Black Country so don't think it's totally local. Might be different to yours though! A lot of people will say scoo ool instead of school etc.

Ikeepbuyinganimals · 08/07/2018 17:52

Tong. From the depths of Lincolnshire 😂

SpeckledDot · 08/07/2018 17:53

Tong (Nottingham)

I don't hear 'tung' round here

sayanythingelse · 08/07/2018 18:27

Originally from Sheffield and I say tong. I went to uni in Leeds and so many people took the piss out of me that it made me question whether I was the only person in the world mispronouncing it. I'm glad to know that I'm not alone now Grin

LoniceraJaponica · 08/07/2018 18:29

sayanythingelse I work in Sheffield, and most of my co-workers are from Sheffield. No-one says tong.

RoseWhiteTips · 08/07/2018 18:44
RoseWhiteTips · 08/07/2018 18:46

Tung as in rung

JacquesHammer · 08/07/2018 18:47

Tonje-way

Grin

Seriously though “tung”

longwayoff · 08/07/2018 18:54

Ah hunter, thanks, I dont meet enough different people to assess for myself. My sister, at college in Crewe, used to raise gales of laughter if she happened to say con cer eet or was going to the li brer ee. We knew no different but I can stop hearing it now its been pointed out.

holycityzoo · 08/07/2018 19:01

Another Manc here and we say tong.
