To have misheard this football reference for so long?

Have absolutely zero interest in football, but can't avoid it at the moment. I went into the room where my DP had on the England V Columbia match and he mentioned the England team logo. I said I hadn't realised that the lions represented England. He replied that I must have heard the Baddiel and Skinner song from years ago. Well bugger me , I always thought they were singing 3 'lines' on a shirt! So am I the biggest idiot in the world, or has anyone else misheard something for so long?

@thecatneuterer really?? Do you not watch the news or use the Internet then? Or shop in supermarkets? I can't believe you didn't really know the World Cup was on!

thecatneuterer · 07/07/2018 16:28

@VioletCharlotte Yes I was a bit surprised too. I listen to Radio 4 practically 24 hours a day - it's even on while I sleep. They do have sports reports on there I suppose, but my mind tends to tune out anything sports related. I have no friends or relations interested in sport. My boyfriend has no interest.

I hadn't noticed anything in supermarkets. But yes, even I agree that it's a bit surprising.

thecatneuterer · 07/07/2018 16:28

Oh and the only social media I'm on is MN

WorldCupnovice · 07/07/2018 16:30

Wowfudge I apologise for my spelling mistake. Mangomama91 The original point of my thread was that I didn't realise that 3 lions represented England as I have no interest in football and have therefore never studied the team strip!

I thought it was "jewels remain". I can remember my sister and I discussing it at the time and our dad telling us it was Jules Rimet which is (or was) the trophy.

The song is called Three Lions, so I'm not sure why you'd think it was 3 lines though.

Wobblybitts · 07/07/2018 23:08

My son was wearing a 3 lines tshirt today Grin

Triskaidekaphilia · 08/07/2018 01:29

I sung both 'three lines' and 'jewels remain' when it first came out, but in my defence, I was 6 at the time Grin

Hushabyelullaby · 08/07/2018 18:16

I always thought 'jewels remain still dreaming', where's the bloody sense in that? My ignorance obviously knows no bounds, and the more alarming thing is that I sing sang it knowing it makes absolutely no sense at all Blush

You'll fit right in with USA Soccer Guy, OP:

usasoccerguy.teemill.co.uk/product/three-lines-jersey/

He's worth a follow if you're on twitter, excellent summary of each match.

RueDeWakening · 08/07/2018 18:32

@Lycanthropology football's coming home was apparently meant to refer to the fact England were hosting a football tournament for the first time since 1966, and England is the home of football.

gymNgin · 08/07/2018 19:22

I knew it said lions but I only found out this year it said 3 lions on the shirt. I thought it said 3 lions on the show!!

Also thought it was 'jewels remain still gleaming' until I read this thread.

Ribbon04 · 08/07/2018 19:33

Ha ha! This made me laugh! A while ago during another world cup, some friends requested I painted "3 lines" on their arms for the match, could I do it? No problem I said of course ( wondering why they couldn't manage 3 lines themselves!) It was only when I actually painted 3 lines on their arm we realised the confusion! So no , you are not alone!

SleepWarrior · 08/07/2018 19:53

I also thought it was three lines.

In fact my thought process went "Huh, that sounds like they said lions. That makes NO sense. Lions?! Oh hold, it could be lines. Three lines as in Adidas maybe? Perhaps it's an Adidas football strip. Yes, that must be it"

driveninsanebythehubby · 08/07/2018 20:10

I’m laughing my tits off at some of these misheard lyrics - can’t believe the 3 lions/3 lines one though! I can forgive Jules Rimet as that’s more obscure if you aren’t into football.

I’ve only read a couple of pages, apologies if the thread moved on!

WorldCupnovice · 08/07/2018 20:28

Thank you RueDeWakening I think I may have to get that shirt.

I thought the ‘and nobby dancing’ was infact ‘a Bobby dazzler’ 😱 and I’ve even googled to check there wasn’t another version! My old housemate used to sing ‘and bobby davro’ to be funny so it’s no wonder I’m confused!

writingsonthewall · 08/07/2018 20:53

I used to think it was three lines also. Realised in about 1998 though!

Ohyesiam · 08/07/2018 20:55

Baddiel and skinner do songs?

Notevenmyrealname · 08/07/2018 21:04

I’m another who thought the words were “jewels remain...” up until about 6 months ago. I never brought it up with anyone, I just pretended I always knew the real words and nod knowingly if I hear anyone refer to Jules Rimet.

PepperSteaks · 08/07/2018 21:09

“If it's any consolation, I spent many years believing the next line was "Jewels remain still gleaming"
Until this week I thought it was Jewels were made still gleaming.

Skywest · 09/07/2018 00:55

Is it not? 😲😶

Skywest · 09/07/2018 00:57

Sorry just read full thread

Babybearsporij · 09/07/2018 06:51

I knew about the Lions and Jules Rimet, but the line "Bobby belting the ball and Nobby dancing" I always thought was "Bobby fell to the floor and I'll be dancing." Not sure how Bobby falling to the floor would be particularly brilliant though!

scarbados · 09/07/2018 20:56

I worked with someone who asked me very seriously who Julie Mason is. 'You know, from that Three Lions song - Julie Mason's screaming'.

(Although I will admit to my mishearing during a rugby world cup. After hearing someone on the radio refer to 'six foot five Jonah Lomu' I remarked that I'd never realised Joanna Lumley was so tall. I spent the next few years being reminded of that one.)
