To have misheard this football reference for so long?

Have absolutely zero interest in football, but can't avoid it at the moment. I went into the room where my DP had on the England V Columbia match and he mentioned the England team logo. I said I hadn't realised that the lions represented England. He replied that I must have heard the Baddiel and Skinner song from years ago. Well bugger me , I always thought they were singing 3 'lines' on a shirt! So am I the biggest idiot in the world, or has anyone else misheard something for so long?

Oh I get to the bottom of the thread and there's 77 other people too 😂

whitershadeofpale · 06/07/2018 15:57

@OwlBeThere, I thought it was "where nobody knows, if it's not a date" until just now. I thought it was talking about a lover's lane type place Blush

Knittedfairies · 06/07/2018 16:02

For all those who thought ‘the jewels remain still gleaming’.... what did you think it meant?

hamandpease · 06/07/2018 16:05

@Knittedfairies

Not a clue.

I've never thought about it 😂

First heard the song as a young child during Euro 96

But I also thought the Bee Gees were singing 'stabilise stabilise' until I was at least 10 🤷🏼‍♀️

FrozenMargarita17 · 06/07/2018 16:11

I'm gobsmacked that it isn't jewels remain still gleaming !!

SoapOnARoap · 06/07/2018 16:12

The Brazilian captain in 1970!had a fibre glass right foot

HunterHearstHelmsley · 06/07/2018 16:14

I thought it was lines too! But I was 10 Grin

Turmericky · 06/07/2018 16:14

I always heard it as the "fourth of may still dreaming"

[and I suspect we shall be still dreaming at some point in the next week....sorry, I'll get my coat and consider myself ghosted]
I'll namechange.

Assburgers · 06/07/2018 16:18

I also thought it was 3 lines until recently!

You know. Like Adidas Blush

PolkerrisBeach · 06/07/2018 16:19

Jeezo, even I knew it was "three Lions" and "Jules Rimet" and I'm Scottish.

KnitFastDieWarm · 06/07/2018 16:22

I thought it was ‘three lines’ until embarrassingly far into adulthood - and I’m a football fan! Blush
In my defence, most of my adult footballing musical knowledge has centered around Spurs chants Grin

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 06/07/2018 16:23

I just played the video to my 5 year old dd. She also thought they were saying "three lines on a shirt"!

Titsywoo · 06/07/2018 16:25

Jules Rimet wasn't the designer of the trophy he was the chairman of FIFA who came up with the idea of the World Cup. He may have designed it as well I guess.

KnitFastDieWarm · 06/07/2018 16:25

Also, I was absentmindedly singing ‘football’s coming home’ yesterday and my 2 year old very seriously said ‘no mummy, football not at home, football outside’
Clearly my lectures about how We Don’t Play With Balls At Home, Only Outside has paid off Blush

MollyHuaCha · 06/07/2018 16:25

I know someone who thought the British national anthem had the line 'Send her Victorias' (as in send Queen Elizabeth lots of Queen Victorias).

Greatorb · 06/07/2018 16:25

facepalm

Oblomov18 · 06/07/2018 16:27

Even I knew it was 3 lions!

totallyliterally · 06/07/2018 16:27

Mind. Blown.

Thought was jewels remain. Just said to husband and he is shocked I didn't know.

I will still always believe it is jewels remain.

dogzdinner · 06/07/2018 16:28

This has really made me laugh. Especially the sea lions😆

I probably couldn't name tell more than a couple of England pkayers these days, but I was more interested when the song first came out. And knew what they were actually singing about

Bumbumtaloo · 06/07/2018 16:30

I always knew that Jules referred to the name of the trophy but also thought the line was ‘Jules remains still gleaming’as in the trophy was nice and clean...

SistersOfPercy · 06/07/2018 16:39

I have this wonderful vision now of someone polishing the trophy bumbum
Grin

Scaredycat2016 · 06/07/2018 16:42

Another in the "jewels remain still gleaming" camp...... Mind blown

Riddo · 06/07/2018 16:43

I thought Rio Ferdinand was a team for quite a while much to DH's amusement 😳
