To have misheard this football reference for so long?

Have absolutely zero interest in football, but can't avoid it at the moment. I went into the room where my DP had on the England V Columbia match and he mentioned the England team logo. I said I hadn't realised that the lions represented England. He replied that I must have heard the Baddiel and Skinner song from years ago. Well bugger me , I always thought they were singing 3 'lines' on a shirt! So am I the biggest idiot in the world, or has anyone else misheard something for so long?

Wow I also thought it was 'jewels remain still gleaming'!!

Inmyvestandpants · 06/07/2018 15:00

I've looked up the lyrics now. Another "jewells remain"er here (even though I thought it made no sense). I thought "and Nobby dancing" was "and I'll be dancing", too. But - sorry OP - I did know it was lions.

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 06/07/2018 15:02

I honestly thought the lyric was dyslexics on fire and wondered why that kind of violence towards an educational issue was allowed on Radio and TV.

I also thought a boycott was a cot only for boys until about 8.

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 06/07/2018 15:03

I thought it was tears remain still gleaming

AdaColeman · 06/07/2018 15:04

So now you also know why the British and Irish rugby team is called "The Lions"! Grin

NormskiNamechange · 06/07/2018 15:04

Well I never. I too thought it was jewels remain still gleaming!

alltoomuchrightnow · 06/07/2018 15:05

Not as bad as me who thought it was 'sea lions' when I first heard it. And after that, it was always three lines for me... only a few years ago did I realise it was lines

DaffodilPower · 06/07/2018 15:05

I thought the second line was "shows the mane still gleaming" as in, the three lions manes... I've been singing that wrong for all these years!!!!

RolyRocks · 06/07/2018 15:08

Feeling smug here that I did know it was “Jules Rimet still gleaming” as in the cup that we won in 1966 is still gleaming GrinFootballFootballFootball

alltoomuchrightnow · 06/07/2018 15:09

did I realise it was LIONS

ratspeaker · 06/07/2018 15:24

Not a song Ive listened to much but often wondered about that 2 nd line. Thanks for the explanation, won't feel such a numpty when on holiday south of the border.

Knew about the lions being England symbol, Scotland's is a Unicorn. Much like our chances of qualifying it's a mythical thing that may have once existed in the past.

Jules rimet hasn't been used since the 70s and was stolen and never recovered in the 80s.

Not actually correct. Brazil won the Jules Rimet trophy outright and still have it.

The trophy WAS stolen once - but that was in 1966, during the World Cup in England. It was found by a dog called Pickles!

Caribou58 · 06/07/2018 15:34

Corrects self, with apologies

Just read that the JR trophy WAS stolen in the 80s and never recovered.

PrimalLass · 06/07/2018 15:35

I knew but keep forgetting. Am not English, to be fair.

SugarIsAmazing · 06/07/2018 15:37

The Jules Rimet trophy was stolen by distance relatives of Susannah Reed from Good Morning Britain.

SugarIsAmazing · 06/07/2018 15:39

Also to make us feel older it should also be "fifty (2) years of hurt" rather than thirty now...

iklboo · 06/07/2018 15:44

I'm glad it's not only me that misheard most of this song Blush

Nodancingshoes · 06/07/2018 15:50

I thought it was 'george Renee's still dreaming'...lol that's what I've been singing for years! Just googled Jules rimet - it all makes sense now 😁

MartyMcFly1984 · 06/07/2018 15:50

I knew the lions.
It was only a few years ago I found it wasn’t jewels remain.
Didn’t realise jules rimet was the trophy, though it was a happy bloke (gleaming = smile)
Also used to think an own goal was a home goal.

OwlBeThere · 06/07/2018 15:51

I was recently watching something with subtitles on, and the song Don't look back in anger by Oasis came on and the words are thus:

Take me to the place where you go
Where nobody knows if it's night or day
But please don't put your life in the hands
Of a Rock n Roll band
Who'll throw it all away

and I realised for the best part of 25 years i've been singing it wrong. I thought that first bit was 'if its not our day' and i've always sung its 'they'll throw it all away' as opposed to who'll.

i felt a bit dumbfounded to be honest. and stupid.

ASAMummy28 · 06/07/2018 15:52

Me too! I sang 'three lines' for years, and had almost identical conversation last World Cup! If it makes you feel any better I have a degree in classical singing! If I learn the words from the paper, fine. Yet most songs learnt from singing along, I usually think the words are completely different. I was singing an Offispiring song for years to the words 'banana bay', and learnt a long while later it's actually 'come out and play'! You are not alone, I could give a million examples! One of the many joys of being dyslexic!

ElenOfTheWays · 06/07/2018 15:53

Don't feel too bad OP. I've never even HEARD of this song. Confused
