To have misheard this football reference for so long?

Have absolutely zero interest in football, but can't avoid it at the moment. I went into the room where my DP had on the England V Columbia match and he mentioned the England team logo. I said I hadn't realised that the lions represented England. He replied that I must have heard the Baddiel and Skinner song from years ago. Well bugger me , I always thought they were singing 3 'lines' on a shirt! So am I the biggest idiot in the world, or has anyone else misheard something for so long?

Knew about the lions being England symbol, Scotland's is a Unicorn. Much like our chances of qualifying it's a mythical thing that may have once existed in the past.

Isn't there a bit in Alice in Wonderland about a lion and unicorn fighting each other? Is that what it meant? Shock

I also thought it was ''jewels remain' as a child back in '96 when I first heard it. And I got very confused because I thought the verse was describing the 1966 final but had the line 'and then Lineker scored' - how could he possibly have been old enough to play? Grin

blackteasplease · 06/07/2018 16:47

To be fair, the way they sing it it does sound exactly like "lines".

OlennasWimple · 06/07/2018 16:49

Ok, so now what about when I tell you that they aren't actually lions......?

Snowysky20009 · 06/07/2018 16:50

Another who thought it was 'jewels remain still gleaming'!!!

blackteasplease · 06/07/2018 16:50

I know it because I was already grown up in 1996!

OlennasWimple · 06/07/2018 16:52

They are in fact leopards Shock Shock Shock

DwangelaForever · 06/07/2018 16:53

@SistersOfPercy I just had to google that line as I've been singing the same too 😂 (to be fair I'm only 27 and from Northern Ireland so don't know who Jules Rimet is)

DwangelaForever · 06/07/2018 16:55

Also very embarressed that I didn't read the rest of the thread before referring to Jules Rimet as a person BlushBlushBlush

Going to quietly back off this thread now Grin

LucyAutumn · 06/07/2018 16:57

Until very recently I thought that Albuquerque song was...

"Hot dogs, jumping frogs, I love cookie"

I still only hear it my way Blush

Snowysky20009 · 06/07/2018 17:05

Can't get this out of my head now
"Hot dogs, jumping frogs, I love cookie" the only way I'll hear it now- thanks!

Modestandatinybitsexy · 06/07/2018 17:05

I always thought "it's coming home" meant the team were on their way back because they'd lost again. I was mystified as to why this was a good thing!

It doesn't make much more sense for football to be coming home either though!

Tfoot75 · 06/07/2018 17:06

I was 11 in 96 and Can remember fairly well exactly this debate in my primary school classroom at the time at which point it was set in stone that of course it’s 3 lions, because there are 3 lions on the badge, and the kit brand was Umbro, not Adidas, duh!

Knew the Jules Rimet one too, but don’t know if we also debated that one at school, or whether it was me fanatically learning the lyrics during one tournament or another. Still know all the lyrics to vindaloo as well.

OwlBeThere · 06/07/2018 17:08

@knitfastdiewarm thats adorable!
@whitershadeofpale, i'm glad its not just me!! lol

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 06/07/2018 17:17

I also thought Nobby dancing was Noddy dancing Grin

ACatsNoHelpWithThat · 06/07/2018 17:17

@Modestandatinybitsexy I think "it's coming home" was because Euro96 was hosted by England. The Three Lions song was originally in reference to that which is why the lyrics make less sense now!

JayeAshe · 06/07/2018 17:24

Nah as eny fule no it's Felines on a shirt hahahaha

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 06/07/2018 17:26

My kids used to sing "sea lions on a shirt".

SheRasBra · 06/07/2018 17:34

Bob Marley: We'll be together with a roof rack over our heads.

Cool! Me dad's got one of them on our car for camping!

Trampire · 06/07/2018 18:38

Well I've learnt something, I was singing it right but I thought Jules Rimet was a England player from 1966 winning team!

He 'gleamed' because he was you know, all sweaty 🤣

Sunnymeg · 06/07/2018 18:40

The Football Association was the first governing body to define the rules of football. These rules were then adopted by other countries around the world. The Football Associations of other countries always have the name of their county included, so French Football Association for example. Due to the fact that the English FA was the first in the world, our countries name is not included. We standardised football, so England is regarded as the originator of what has become the modern game. That is why they sing 'Football's coming home' The English created it and gave it to the world. We are the home of football, it was born here and we gave it to the world.

Nobby Stiles was a member of the 1966 England World Cup team. After they had won, he got very excited and started capering about trying to dance. He was obviously a much better footballer than a dancer, but was caught for posterity trying his best dance moves. His sheer exuberance and obvious happiness, caught the public imagination, hence the reference in the song.

“30 years of hurt” makes me want to vom in hot jets

C0untDucku1a · 06/07/2018 19:22

@SoyDora she said three lines, not two Grin

Pebblespony · 06/07/2018 19:26

I thought the Oasis line was "If it's not ok".
