To have misheard this football reference for so long?

Have absolutely zero interest in football, but can't avoid it at the moment. I went into the room where my DP had on the England V Columbia match and he mentioned the England team logo. I said I hadn't realised that the lions represented England. He replied that I must have heard the Baddiel and Skinner song from years ago. Well bugger me , I always thought they were singing 3 'lines' on a shirt! So am I the biggest idiot in the world, or has anyone else misheard something for so long?

You didn’t have the internet in 1996? My Nan had the internet in 1996.

SoapOnARoap · 07/07/2018 08:34

My great, great grandfather often recalls the stories of the 56k dial up internet connection, of 1996..

AsAProfessionalFekko · 07/07/2018 08:58

I had a disk fax in 1994. That was back when Floppy discs were Floppy.

mostdays · 07/07/2018 09:20

We got the Internet in 1997 I think. When the first phone bill came in afterwards my mum ran around the house yanking out the wires.

WorldCupnovice · 07/07/2018 09:59

Sashh Well I obviously thought that the song was called 'Three lines on a shirt'.

GrinGrin

I’m had no idea about jules Rimet and I’m not quite sure I believe you all.

glamorousgrandmother · 07/07/2018 10:01

I think I got it in 1999 or 2000. My Dad had it earlier but a lot of people still didn't.

mangomama91 · 07/07/2018 11:18

I'm I just don't know what to say 😂
Firstly how you didn't realise the logo was three lions and then how you've been signing three lines 😂🙊
But I see from reading this thread it's quite a common misheard line

bringincrazyback · 07/07/2018 11:21

If it's any consolation, I spent many years believing the next line was "Jewels remain still gleaming"

You mean it isn't? 😳😳😳

wowfudge · 07/07/2018 11:21

Haven't rtwt btw but it's Colombia, not Columbia OP.

EdWinchester · 07/07/2018 11:25

I had never heard of Jules Rimet until this song.

I think I thought when they sing 'jewels remain..' too. Probably because they mispronounce it.

FatSally · 07/07/2018 11:31

It wasn't massively common place though IME.

We got the internet in about 2000 and I can remember being a couple of years behind my friends at the time but most people I knew definitely didn't have it in 96.

ScipioAfricanus · 07/07/2018 11:40

In the late 90s even if you had the internet the wait to dial up and then wait for pages to load was roughly the same as going to the library and looking something up in the encyclopaedia Britannica. I’m not sure I’d have bothered for song lyrics!

Offred2 · 07/07/2018 12:46

I thought it was ‘jewelled remains still gleaming’ until I was with my husband in the museum in Uruguay at the stadium where the first World Cup was held. He pointed at the trophy and sang ‘the Jules Rimet still gleaming’. And then it finally clicked for me!

Personally though I think ‘the jewelled remains still gleaming’ is a good lyric! Evocative of past glories, glimmers of hope remaining... and who wants literal song lyrics anyway?!

user7469322 · 07/07/2018 12:53

Jules Rimet (French pronunciation: [ʒyl ʁimɛ]; 14 October 1873 – 16 October 1956) was a French football administrator who was the 3rd President of FIFA, serving from 1921 to 1954. He is FIFA's longest-serving president, in office for 33 years. He also served as the president of the French Football Federation from 1919 to 1942.

On Rimet's initiative, the first FIFA World Cup was held in 1930. The Jules Rimet Trophy was named in his honour. He also founded the French football club Red Star Saint-Ouen.

NotLeanButMean · 07/07/2018 13:11

I found out about the jewels remain thing on a thread on here a couple of days ago and haven't stopped thinking about it since Grin

Also always sing 'when Lineker scored' Blush in my defence, I am young and never really did the calculations.

Inmyvestandpants · 07/07/2018 14:14

It is Linneker. They’re referencing various great football moments not just 1966, I think.

AviatorShades · 07/07/2018 14:26

Cracking song! That right it was written by Frank Skinner and David Baddiel (or however he spells it?)Blush. Know I could look it up, but..

Anyway, it's deffo Sealions on the shore, they're coming home. With footballs, apparently. Balanced on their noses, maybe? Makes perfect sense to a little girl I know. And she knows everything Grin

Just passing time to kickoff

Redcrayons · 07/07/2018 14:37

I knew it was lions, didn't know it wasn't 'jewels remain still gleaming'.

I was quite shocked that the 'thirty years of hurt' should really be 52! How is the song that old?

slovenlys · 07/07/2018 15:16

Totally off the football/lyrics topic but my ex believed that women didn't poo - until he was about 15. Seriously. His mum had said "oh no, ladies don't do that" and it wasn't til biology class that he realised she might've been fibbing.

I love telling people this.

wowfudge · 07/07/2018 15:26

Three Lions was written by Ian Broudie of the Lightning Seeds, Baddiel and Skinner.

Does anyone know what the fans in the stadium are singing to the tune of "September"?

ChickenOrEgg6 · 07/07/2018 15:45

I've never even heard it so Grin

Inmyvestandpants · 07/07/2018 16:02

@wowfudge it’s:

Woah England are in Russia
Woah Drinking all your vodka
woah England’s going all the way

wowfudge · 07/07/2018 16:05

Excellent. Thank you @Inmyvestandpants!

thecatneuterer · 07/07/2018 16:10

I had never even heard the song until there was a Radio 4 programme about it yesterday. I'd heard 'it's coming home' shouted by people, but had no idea what it referred to.

But then I also didn't realise the World Cup was taking place this year until I tuned in for Holby City and it wasn't on.
