AIBU to keep work's refund?

Tartle · 04/07/2018 23:36

So I've been oop north for a training session today, train and expenses all paid for by work. Due to a fatality on the line at Watford earlier today the train is running about 90 mins late and I am whiling away my time drinking rubbish overpriced train wine and filling in the delay repay form on the virgin trains website.

So here is my question. Work obviously bought my ticket so if I get the cost refunded should I pay it back because it was their money or AIBU to pocket the cash as compensation because it's me that been on the sodding train for 4 sodding hours?

I still have to be at work tomorrow at 8 am so not feeling like I owe them that much right now.

OP posts:

if it is a refund of ticket price then I think it has to go back, you cannot keep it, but if it is compensation then it's yours.

DH had this with a mahoosive flight delay on a previous job but it's definitely compensation for the inconvenience then so he kept it, and told the colleagues too...they also kept all theirs! :o

ChristmasAccountant · 05/07/2018 08:57

Been in same situation twice. I’ve got the refunds both time - it was my boss that told me to do it as I was the one inconvenienced! Got paid by cheque.

I’d say keep the money OP.

crispysausagerolls · 05/07/2018 08:57

Yabu to use the term ‘oop north’. It’s patronising and offensive.

Oh fuck off please! 😂

CornishMaid1 · 05/07/2018 09:00

I think it depends on when you have been delayed - was it during the day when you were expected to be back at work or was if after work hours and on your time?

I would speak to work. Tell them there was a delay and you have applied for compensation and do they want you to absorb the expenses for being delayed and keep the compensation if you get some or pay them the compensation less your extra expenses/overtime pay and see what they say.

donquixotedelamancha · 05/07/2018 09:02

Oop North is offensive as it infers that up here we're either all country bumpkins pottering around our farms with our whippets or living in a real life LS Lowry painting.

I'm very sceptical that you live oop North. How do you cope with life without melting? Dry sarcastic humour is pretty ubiquitous.

We Northerners can cope with use of idioms without feeling 'patronised' or 'offended'. Speaking for my people- we're fine thanks.

Agerbilatemycardigan · 05/07/2018 09:06

You've managed to score a hat trick of insults there Iwantaunicorn Grin

Ellie56 · 05/07/2018 09:07

I went on a training course last month and was delayed on the journey home. I considered the compensation was mine as it was me who was massively inconvenienced having to sit on a train in the middle of nowhere for nearly an hour. I asked for a rail voucher as I had not paid for the ticket.

It is compensation for delay. You were the one delayed and inconvenienced, not the company, so you should keep the money.

babyboyHarrison · 05/07/2018 09:10

Give the money back and go into work 4 hrs late or more realistically take 4hrs time in lieu

bettybyebye · 05/07/2018 09:23

Similar happened to me a few months ago. Mentioned on a call to my boss that i’d got home later than planned from a work conference, she told me to get straight on to the delay repay site to claim, and that the money was mine because I was the one whose time was wasted. I love my boss Smile

EveningHare · 05/07/2018 09:25

i think if you like your job - you have to find out the company policy and follow it

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 05/07/2018 09:26

Wouldn’t even consider not keeping it. In fact my boss expects me too - told me to claim and ask for it back in cheque else it will refund to the corporate card.

I tried to claim on my ticket - delayed by two hours. They closed my claim because I couldn’t provide a ticket - because I used a virtual one on the app Hmm. Shit bags. A screenshot plus emails wasn’t enough.

PitterPatterOfBigFeet · 05/07/2018 09:29

It's your compensation for inconvenience. Since you're on your way home you're the only one inconvenienced - you've also had to buy extra food and drinks etc. due to the wait. It's fine to keep it.

DeadGood · 05/07/2018 09:35

“I tried to claim on my ticket - delayed by two hours. They closed my claim because I couldn’t provide a ticket - because I used a virtual one on the app hmm. Shit bags. A screenshot plus emails wasn’t enough.”

That’s shocking!

Fishbiscuits · 05/07/2018 09:35

“There has been a fatality on the line and you're trying to claim compensation for something that is beyond the train company's control! Where is your compassion?? A person has died and all you are concerned about is getting a refund?? Wow”

Well not claiming the refund isn’t going to bring them back, is it? Do you think the train company is going to tot up the unclaimed compensation and put it towards suicide prevention?

I had a family member kill themselves by jumping under a train. It was an awful, awful thing to happen, and affected my dad particularly badly, as he was the one who dropped him off at the station, unaware of what he was planning. I could honestly though say that none of us would have given a crap whether people were getting compensation for being delayed as a result. Why would we? They didn’t know us, or him, and vice versa, and not claiming the money wouldn’t have made a blind bit of difference to us in our grief. Our only concerns were the relative we lost, and of course we felt awful for the poor train driver who hit him.

WineAndTiramisu · 05/07/2018 09:35

I'd check, but would hope it's yours to keep (if not, ask for the 4hrs overtime Grin)

There's a few professionally offended people on here today... I'm Northern and not offended! There is also more choice of shops in London than any other city.

Also stop with the "someone has died therefore you can't possibly think about anything else" virtue signalling.

SpandexTutu · 05/07/2018 09:43

If they are paying during you the time you are on the train, then I would return it to work. if they aren't and this is on your own time, I would take it as compensation for your personal 4 hours of wasted time.

AlwaysTheEnd · 05/07/2018 09:45

Agree that I'd ask work and I'd have assumed they would keep the money.

However I think it's a good idea to make a donation to the Samaritans or other mental health charity when something like this happens.

Dagnabit · 05/07/2018 09:51

Well said, Fishbiscuits Flowers

It's a tragedy for the person's loved ones and an awful situation but people shouldn't feel guilty for claiming compensation for the time they lost. It doesn't make them heartless or immoral

crispysausagerolls · 05/07/2018 09:53

fishbiscuits

Your poor father!!

Tinkobell · 05/07/2018 09:58

People from the north don't say oop. Also I'm guessing the family of the fatality victim are going to have an infinitely shitter day than you with your delay and petty refund query. Bad taste Post.

Thebluedog · 05/07/2018 10:01

I’d mention it to work, if they take it ‘ahh well miserable bastards’ if they let you keep it ‘jobs a good un’
Not worth getting sacked for imo, should they expect to keep it

As for ‘oop north’ I live ‘oop north’ and always refer to it as such. Some people are such princesses for getting offended by something so trivial

Tinkobell · 05/07/2018 10:13

Not offended. Just think it's a crap attempt to be witty and jars with the fatality.

donquixotedelamancha · 05/07/2018 10:15

Also I'm guessing the family of the fatality victim are going to have an infinitely shitter day than you with your delay and petty refund query.

I missed the bit where OP said the family of the deceased should have any involvement with procuring him a refund. Lot of people are having a shitter day than all of us, pershpa we should all just stop posting on t'internet.

I find it highly amusing that someone who's last thread referred to her uptight husband as bing OCD (quite high on the MN offence bingo list) would police others over something so petty.

As for ‘oop north’ I live ‘oop north’ and always refer to it as such.

Me too. I also say things like 'when I were a lad all this were swamp'. It's almost as if Northerners can have a sense of humour....

People from the north don't say oop.

Oh no, wait, we can't. Everybody stop it now.

m0therofdragons · 05/07/2018 10:25

I would offer work the money back but they'd probably say don't worry, although I'm nhs so maybe they'd want it. I'd feel uncomfortable taking it without a conversation but I'm not s rule breaker.

ScattyCharly · 05/07/2018 10:46

I think it should be yours to keep.

Work paid to get an employee to a place. Work got what they paid for.

You however had hours of your time taken up by a train delay. Therefore this money ought to be compensating you for that.

However since you could potentially get in trouble, I’d send an email to work saying virgin gave me £x compensation for the very late train, as I spent my personal time waiting and having to buy drinks/snacks, I feel that it is my compensation to keep. Please let me know if this is not in line with company policy.
