To be sick of this 'it's coming home' nonsense

It's not coming home. Who ever said England is home? It makes us look idiotic to the rest of the world. Someone on the radio said they really believe England is going to win this year. The rest of the world must be pissing themselves looking at England cheering over such a mediocre team and having such delusions of grandeur.

It also seems to make people behave like hooligans. I've seen some crazy driving before the matches start, and people were making noise until the early hours last night.

It's just a game! We never get this excited about the olympics, Wimbledon or even Rugby.

Hilarious how wound up people are getting over others saying they find football dull. I really wouldn't get this offended by a thread calling Corrie dull. Nor would I expect everyone to "get behind" the cast for a live eposide, for example.

It's just a game. It's bloody boring and it takes over far too much of life in this country.

The80sweregreat · 05/07/2018 06:42

Many people prefer Rugby as it doesnt have the same hooligan element of Football, has a better reputation generally.
I'm glad there hasnt been any violence ( so far) in Russia, makes a change to hear the sport news without any reference to fans getting up to things they shouldn't/ being well behaved. I suppose the authorities in Russia are a lot more scary, wouldnt put up with it though.
' getting behind' the Corrie actors is a funny thought though - someone should write a song about them.A lot of those actors are worth the same as footballers, probably more.

carebea · 05/07/2018 06:54

I have no interest in football what so ever! Other than the World Cup!
As you get to see all those countries really trying and I love the fact of how unpredictable it is too!
YABU it is every 4 years!
Next time it is on all of my children will be in secondary school !

DilianaDilemma · 05/07/2018 06:54

Asking in earnest: can someone explain the mass appeal of football - or spectator sports in general - to me? I'm genuinely not getting it!

I'm especially irked by people saying things like 'we won'.

No, YOU didn't win anything! In fact, you were sitting in front of your telly, gulping down beer a d stuffing your face with crisps and getting oddly excited about a bunch of people you've probably never met in person running around on a lawn chasing after a ball.

What am I missing?

cherrytrees123 · 05/07/2018 07:04

Diliana - I said this exact thing to my OH last night. WE didn't win, he wasn't playing!!

JacquesHammer · 05/07/2018 07:28

It’s the tribal element, a sense of belonging to a group of people who all have the same interests and goals.

Follyfoot · 05/07/2018 07:51

My biggest relief is that my DH isn't interested in football at all.

Goodness, that's a very strange criteria to judge your partner on.

Have you ever been to a concert, and enjoyed it even though you weren't the band or orchestra playing?

Have you ever been to the theatre or cinema, and enjoyed it even though you weren't the one acting?

Have you ever been to a comedy show, and enjoyed it even though you weren't the one performing?

MoistCantaloupe · 05/07/2018 08:01

I prefer Vindaloo.

Seasawride · 05/07/2018 08:02

Asking in earnest can anyone explain the mass interest in spectator sports I don’t get it

Yes you do of course you do you just like to pretend you don’t get it to sound superior Wink

Justanotherlurker · 05/07/2018 08:02

To be fair, world in motion is the best football song ever, but as a chant you cannot beat It's coming home

milafawny · 05/07/2018 08:04

I dont get it either. I understand football is from the uk and it made sense as a song when the tournament was being held here. Them winning a match isnt bringing anything back though. Them winning the trophy doesn't even make sense as we won it once over 50 years ago. It made sense in the context of euros being held here.

bananafish81 · 05/07/2018 08:07

I have been a football fan since I was a teen, when I started going every week with my dad to see our club play (season tickets in the family since 1947).

I've been to cities all over Europe to see our team play

I went to the Champions League final in 1999 in the middle of my A-level! One of the most exhilarating experiences of my life

I went to the Europa League final last year - it was only a few days after the Manchester bombing, and being a part of a Mancunian tribe was actually incredibly emotional (I live in London and rarely make it to home games nowadays)

Being part of a crowd cheering on your team, watching fantastic sportsmanship, and the excitement of 90 mins of a competitive game, can be - if it's your thing - a wonderfully bonding experience.

Home games there are tonnes of women, away matches I may often be one of very few women, but I've never once felt unsafe. One pro is that unlike the long queues at the gents I can usually waltz into the ladies! Blokes are generally very considerate and enjoy the banter, and will often be quite protective if there's a crush in a crowd.

I've loved watching the world cup at home - and listening to the matches during the day sneakily on my headphones at work!

stevie69 · 05/07/2018 08:18

@Rudgie47

Pleased to meet you. My name's Stevie and I've been a season ticket holder for 40 years.

So ..... now you know at least one Grin

ShatnersWig · 05/07/2018 08:23

Bloody hell, another thread on this - and I say that as someone who dislikes football and has been on three of the other threads. There's more threads than there are matches and I'm trying to avoid the football Smile

bananafish81 · 05/07/2018 08:26

Also you've never lived until you've done the John Barnes rap bit when doing World in Motion with your mates at Karaoke Grin although possibly not as good as the Lulu bit of Take That's Relight My Fire

To be sick of this 'it's coming home' nonsense
PinkFlamingo888 · 05/07/2018 08:28

IT’S COMING HOME!!!

LonginesPrime · 05/07/2018 08:29

It's like the abundance of threads that popped up complaining about the Ask Me Anything threads ...you couldn't move for the AMA threads, and when you did find something that wasn't one, it turned out to be an objection to the same!

I think for people who aren't into football and really can't get behind the team, this is their way of finding their community when they feel a bit left out of all the football talk.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 05/07/2018 08:34

What is it about the World Cup that's sooooo infectious?

Rest of 3 years 11 months - not a fuck given, fat white bald men sporting St. George cross can f off with their twattishness

During World Cup - You've got to hold and give, but do it at the right time! Football

runwithme · 05/07/2018 08:42

FOOTBALLS COMING HOME!

ToffeeUp · 05/07/2018 08:44

It's funny how all these threads pop up once England is doing well. We football fans had 2 weeks of discussing and enjoying the world cup in peacefull bliss being ignored by most of MN

ShatnersWig · 05/07/2018 08:46

Should England not win the World Cup, I'm looking forward to saying to everyone who has been doing the It's Coming Home thing...

YOU BIG FAT LIAR
PANTS ON FIRE

user1471517900 · 05/07/2018 08:49

Toffee Grin - that's very very true.

IrmaFayLear · 05/07/2018 08:50

Another of these threads started by absolute bitter, twisted, miserable, ignorant idiots. Ignorant because the OP doesn't seem to realise that "it's coming home" is from a song (and a very good one at that).

If you don't like football, do something else. I wonder how many miserable f*ers there were in 1966 accusing anyone who dared to be somewhat pleased that England did quite well of being racist hooligans.

Sparklingbrook · 05/07/2018 08:52

Funny how people think Rugby is somehow superior. They have obviously never witnessed the players on a rugby tour. The drinking and initiation ceremonies are legendary.
Not forgetting the array of injuries etc. And that's the players not the fans. Grin
