...to think it's rude of teachers at end of term declaring that they've earned their holiday/deserve a large glass of wine etc.....?

Does it not imply that they think everyone's kids are little horrors and that it's such a hard job and we're not worthy?
Maybe all the kids are little horrors, maybe it is a hard job but they're getting paid for it. It was their choice! My job's hard too but I won't bang on about It.
I think it's quite insulting to the parents of the children. No? [hmmm]

I think it's rude of pupils to rush off at the end of term saying they are looking forward to playing out, staying up late, getting up late, not doing homework, not wearing uniform and spending time with their families. How very dare they! Grin Wink

m0therofdragons · 30/06/2018 11:22

People really do get offended by the most random things Hmm

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 30/06/2018 11:22

I think the school the OP’s children go to must be atypical, unless it’s an indie. I e never worked in a school where there were class sizes of 10-15 and I imagine that smaller numbers would make a difference. That’s only part of the story though as everyone has said.

For most teachers, the actual teaching is the straightforward part of the job and it’s the stuff that goes with it that is so draining, seemingly pointless, irritating and plain idiotic sometimes.

PirateWeasel · 30/06/2018 11:30

I'm not a teacher and have no idea what it's like, I just know I'd never have the balls to do it with all the targets and red tape etc. But as a PP said, thank God some good people out there do it or we'd all be screwed! I do confess to being madly jealous of their long holidays, but my teacher friends tell me they spend a lot of time marking and preparing stuff even though they're not in school. So presumably it evens out in the end! Everyone who works hard deserves some time off, however that time off comes! Bring on the🍷 I say!

abigailsnan · 30/06/2018 11:31

Those teachers deserve a large glass of wine imho,my DGD has just finished her GCSEs and her teachers have all been staying late for extra tuition sometimes 2hrs after school and if they don't deserve a few stress free glasses then who does.Has anyone tried teaching hormonal 16yr olds for a living ?? its something I couldn't do and thats for sure.

Welliejellie · 30/06/2018 11:34

No I agree teachers deserve a nice summer break and definitely a bottle of wine.

Thank you to all the hard working teachers out there.

arethereanyleftatall · 30/06/2018 11:36

I'm so glad to read the unanimous responses here in defence of teachers against the parents like the op. There is universal loathing of these parents as there should be, though most lack the self awareness to realise it. (Massive projection on my part via the only parent I know who would write such a post, who gives teachers at our school such a horrid time).

gamerwidow · 30/06/2018 11:37

Ridiculous OP I can’t wait until my holidays start and I get the chance to put my feet up with a glass of wine. Doesn’t mean I hate my job or my coworkers it just means I need a break.
My DDs teachers don’t have to love being with my child so much they can’t look forward to a break from her.

elephantoverthehill · 30/06/2018 11:37

Welliejellie just the one bottle for six weeks? Sad Grin

Fluffybat · 30/06/2018 11:38

Hahaha YABU!! As a teacher I love my class of 30 10 year olds. However, I also love no marking for 6 weeks, no reports, no midnight PowerPoint making, no microwaving salt dough at 2am.... the list goes on. By July the kids are burning out and so are the teachers. It's not a person insult to each child- we're just tired and thankful for a lie in. As for pay... well that's for another thread. I would totally be bringing on the wine in three weeks if I wasn't pregnant. 🤣

WowLookAtYou · 30/06/2018 11:39

If, as I suspect, you are a SAHM with kids in a naice little private school with 12-15 in a class, then with the greatest respect, you haven't got a fucking clue what the average teacher in mainstream education goes through in an average day/week/term.
So excuse me, but you can fuck off with your "hmmms."

There. Is that rude enough for you? AngryAngryAngry

WowLookAtYou · 30/06/2018 11:41

Oh, and Thanks and Gin to stillmedusa for all that you do. I am in awe of you.

gamerwidow · 30/06/2018 11:43

nevertwerknaked I’ve run the school discos for the last few years as chair of the PTA and there’s nothing as eye opening for how hard it actually is to supervise large groups of kids.
I’m sure individually the kids are lovely but together they’re a pack of feral sods. I don’t know how teachers do it everyday.

bobstersmum · 30/06/2018 11:44

They work hard and I agree they deserve a holiday and a full barrel of wine!

jarhead123 · 30/06/2018 11:46

Totally agree. Hate the attitude that teachers have the hardest jobs. They don't.

switswoo81 · 30/06/2018 11:46

Feck should have just stuck to the
large glass of wine ( that I didn’t really deserve because am on mat leave)last night. Went out with the other school staff for a quiet one and cocktails were 2 for €10 . Head is banging this morning! Nothing like a group of knackered teachers to let rip...
but yeah yabu!

AngeloMysterioso · 30/06/2018 11:50

My friend is a teacher and has been absolutely broken in two the last few months getting her kids through gcse and a levels. She’s done c. 90-hour weeks and has no social life at all as she spends her weekends marking, planning or asleep. Damn fucking right she deserves her holiday!

bluemoonchances · 30/06/2018 11:53

Currently sitting here without my husband (who is a teacher) because he's giving up he free time, for free, all weekend, so that his pupils can do their duke of Edinburgh award. Next weekend he'll be away escorting 150 14years olds on a school trip to Europe.

2 weeks after that he'll be away for another duke of Edinburgh weekend.

Teachers don't get paid for this stuff. By the time the Sumer holiday arrives, he's earned them deserves his wine!

BeautifulWintersMorning · 30/06/2018 11:54

The threads with people ranting at teachers for not providing free childcare over the summer will start in a couple of weeks. Happens every year

ShawshanksRedemption · 30/06/2018 11:56

I've worked in a few different places before I joined Education. I thought the other jobs were hard, but Education tops it. Being emotionally available to children as well as educating them can be tough. I never had 30 of my colleagues coming to me on an ad hoc basis telling me they'd got a tummy ache, or that so-and-so was being mean to them and that I needed to just give them a bit of TLC to set them right. I didn't worry about any of my colleagues being neglected at home (not eating breakfast, coming in dirty etc). I didn't worry whether a colleague was going to hit me or swear at me.

And that's before I even get to the actual educating part, all the admin that comes with it and the expectation from Govt that the management have to enforce.

If anyone thinks teaching is easy or are begrudging of the holidays, well there's a lack of teachers out there, so please join us!

PositivelyPERF · 30/06/2018 11:57

Never mind the glass of wine, I’d be carrying a bloody hip flask, if I had to look after other people’s children. shudder

IGiorni · 30/06/2018 11:57

Yes YABU. No teacher will ever say their job is harder than that of a nurse/dr/police/soldier etc but it is damn hard work and yes, they’re entitled to be excited about their holidays. I’ve never met a teacher who didn’t like their class, it’s not a slur on the children to want a break. I’m looking forward to 6 weeks of not getting up at 5:30, not stressing about planning and paperwork, not cutting out and laminating pictures for displays in my own time, not buying resources every time I go shopping. I adore the children but it’s a physically and emotionally draining job and I can’t wait for some proper family time.

pyramidbutterflyfish · 30/06/2018 11:58

YANBU.

Also see - actors expecting the audience to applaud at the end of plays. Narcissists.

Oh, and vicars who insists on shaking hands with the congregation after the service. Self absorbed, the lot of them.

worstmotherintheworld · 30/06/2018 11:58

I think most teachers can't wait for this term to be over - understandably. If they are in primary education, they will have had the pressure of SATs followed by endless trips, sportsdays, end of year shows etc that all take a lot of organisation and disrupt normal teaching. If they are secondary teachers they will have been preparing for GCSEs and A Levels and now have to wait for results. When you add these things to everything else that teachers deal with, I am not surprised that they look forward to letting their hair down.

Abra1de · 30/06/2018 11:59

They deserve a bucket of champagne. Make that a bath tub.
