Hello!

So my friends and I were discussing class issues and one friend told me that I would have 'no idea about anything as I'm upper class' and another strangly interupted and mentioned that I'm working not upper class? I personally thought I was middle?

My situation is:
5 bed house worth 900K, no mortgage
2 Teenagers
Lucky enough to pay for their uni fees and sixth form fees, both at private sixth form, one went to a grammar and the other a state secondary school
DD owns a pony and DS used to
DD plays the violin and DS the drums
2 holidays a year (one longer one and either a week in cornwall/scotland or a couple of weekend city breaks)
Household income of 110-140K depending on the year as DH is self employed and can earn up to 90K.

I promise I'm not boasting or anything, we give 10K a year to charity and DS is in the process of persuading his dad to give his uni fees to a charity.

So what class would I be in your opinion?

@ScreamingValenta

*Should chips from the chippy be in newspaper?

Oooh, yes!*

Amen sister! God I miss than. I want to lick the brown sauce off the grease proof paper. Last time I could do that I was 12. Happy memories:)

*Do your parents/grandparents shake their heads sadly at the mention of Thatcher and quite mutter, "that bitch"?

No - they tend to mock politicians generally, but have no special hatred for Maggie.*

Ah, Northern thing maybe? She was especially unpleasant in Scotland and with minors etc, people are much more “we are all working class and equal” and she hit working class traditions and people, badly. It’s only recently that people started voting conservative in Scotland, they’re still not over the effect it had!

*Is Spain Costa del UK a desirable holiday destination?

No - I like camping holidays.*

Our future friendship is something I’m now concerned for. First half of your answer, oh yes thank you, second half, really? Glamping like Oprah or tenting? I like sleeping in a bed! I do like backpacking though, let’s agree that we agree here:)

*Do you "do" cities when you travel?

Yes*

I do “do” too! Or I do say let’s do. I was thinking twat points for me for that:)

*Did your family connections get you where you are, fancy job and/or jail?

No*

Good for you. I’m never impressed when I see this.

*What would you choose, lavender fields or a vineyard?

Vineyard!*

Oh it’s on:) Actually dream is both, but could get completely sloshed and hallucinate as many lavender fields as desired!

I hate braggers too - the stealth sort, the up front ones , the ones that shoehorn in the estimated value of their home or what car they drive into most conversations.
Working Class snobs are the very worst for this i've found.

LellyMcKelly · 28/06/2018 08:56

I’d say aspirational/nouveau riche. The Hyacinth Bucket Class. The real poshoes couldn’t give a stuff about class.

I’m still thinking about chippies...

Happy days.

Del Boy had class. Generous, takes massive care of family and friends, drives classic cars and is Batman.

I don’t know what a livery is and for this I am proud!

Bluntness100 · 28/06/2018 09:00

Does anyone know what a self employed banker is,,,anyone,,?

< clutches at straws>

The80sweregreat · 28/06/2018 09:07

I would love to have seen Del boy on a horse, but we did have uncle albert on a boat.
self employed banker -= loan shark?

The80sweregreat · 28/06/2018 09:11

A livery is a stable for horses - not all livery's are the same ( i guess)
the very ' upper class' ones for racehorses have a better class of horse and trainers and may even be courted by the royals for their ' training needs'. Lower end have second hand tack and saddles and the owners do their own grooming and mucking out.

Uchafi · 28/06/2018 09:14

Having stuff doesnt make you middle class.
My husband works in a factory and I stay at home. If we was to win the lottery and buy a mansion, a horse and the fucking moon we'd still be working class.
Anyone who needs to question it needs to shake their head. It's crass.

boboboobs1 · 28/06/2018 09:18

Does anyone know what a self employed banker is,,,anyone,,?

an independent financial advisor?

When my dad worked for Morgan Stanley, UBS, etc he definitely had contracts & was an employee.

The80sweregreat · 28/06/2018 09:22

The bankers and stock brokers you see in the braces and stripes etc are they self employed? its a genuine question, i assumed they worked for one of the blue chip companies , but thinking about it, they could be described as self employed maybe? i really do not know how any of that works!

Flowerfae · 28/06/2018 09:24

It doesn't just go on your earnings (you could even win a lot of money on the lottery, but your actual 'class' wouldn't automatically change) or education (although both do play a part) It goes on your family and your partners family, what they did, what class they are. One of my friends is (probably) upper-class because her family are aristocracy and she had an upper-class upbringing, but she doesn't have much money, because the money is tied up in land and estates. The title, land and estates all went to her sibling and they don't get on, she's never tried to contest it as she says she doesn't miss that way of life and is happy how she is.

Bluntness100 · 28/06/2018 09:24

Normally the stripes and braces crowd are employed,,,

And I guess banker normally means you work for a bank.

All I can think of is financial advisor, or mortgage advisor, but why not say that, they aren't bankers,

As said, I'm just not sure this is wholly real...

The80sweregreat · 28/06/2018 09:27

She still hasn’t explained what ‘class issues’ they were talking about.

RedDwarves · 28/06/2018 09:35

You'd be eaten alive in Australia.

Tall poppy syndrome and all that.

WatermelonGlitter · 28/06/2018 09:45

Does it really matter what class you are? if you have your own home, are warm, fed, cared for, loved and don't have to worry about where the next anything is coming from you are more fortunate than most people in the UK...That puts you in a different class to most people, whatever your actual class might be.

longwayoff · 28/06/2018 09:45

If you have to ask you have no class.

Lovemyhubby · 28/06/2018 09:57

One of the unwritten rules on MN is not to mention money as it provokes a lot of jealousy hence some of the snidey remarks.

The bottomline it sounds like you have a great lifestyle. I think having money to afford a nice lifestyle is far superior to this class bullshit. The only people who posses true class are those with good character, morals, kindness and consideration for others and manners. Some of the most rudest, most inconsiderate people, I have encountered have been pouncers on ponies. I also have a constantly rude and patronising middle class MIL who is without exaggeration a real life Hyacinth Bucket. She got rid of her old Land Rover and replaced it with a big Mercedes people mover with tinted windows, which I made the mistake of calling a van. Well, how insulting. It’s not a van, I was corrected. MIL was not impressed! Anyone with their head not up their arse would be calling it a bloody van! Lol

crispysausagerolls · 28/06/2018 10:08

Bluntness100

DH is a Banker (an actual one, as opposed to whatever the hell OP’s husband is doing). A man in his 40s who has decided to be an “independent banker” but is making 60-90k a year (which is what a first year analyst makes straight out of university) sounds like a crock of shit to me. None of this makes any sense.

the80sweregreat

There are several types of livery, yes. But I have yet to ever come across a livery that costs 1k for a children’s pony. My horse is on a full livery (where EVERYTHING but the riding is done for you) and that costs 650£ a month. In an affluent part of Surrey. For a fucking massive horse. OP’s post has more holes than a hay bale 😂😂😂

RoseWhiteTips · 28/06/2018 10:16

...most rude...

catinboots9 · 28/06/2018 10:16

I know loads of working class people who own ponies and horses

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 28/06/2018 10:18

Maybe the OP is an aspiring Jilly Cooper and was trying out the class markers for a new character?
