To ask what social class you would say I am?

Hello!

So my friends and I were discussing class issues and one friend told me that I would have 'no idea about anything as I'm upper class' and another strangly interupted and mentioned that I'm working not upper class? I personally thought I was middle?

My situation is:
5 bed house worth 900K, no mortgage
2 Teenagers
Lucky enough to pay for their uni fees and sixth form fees, both at private sixth form, one went to a grammar and the other a state secondary school
DD owns a pony and DS used to
DD plays the violin and DS the drums
2 holidays a year (one longer one and either a week in cornwall/scotland or a couple of weekend city breaks)
Household income of 110-140K depending on the year as DH is self employed and can earn up to 90K.

I promise I'm not boasting or anything, we give 10K a year to charity and DS is in the process of persuading his dad to give his uni fees to a charity.

So what class would I be in your opinion?

@SluttyButty

I messed up big time repeatedly in adulthood much to my parents despair and now I am the girl with the posh voice in a small house on an estate in the Cotswolds 😂

Are you "THE VILLIGERS"? Now that would be fascinating...

(I thought the Cotswolds were posh? Ponies and wellies and brisk walks)

LuMarie · 28/06/2018 00:21

What was your father's occupation?

He is a hero. That makes me incredibly blessed.

So agree with moving the focus to having class!

Stillwishihadabs · 28/06/2018 06:18

I agree with the others, it's all just a bit aspiring ( private school does not make you upper class, public school -maybe). Some questions;
1)Why did you move your DC out of grammar school/state school for sixth form ?- I know very few people who do this.
2) how many places can you go on holiday without paying for accomadation ?
3) Where did you go to university ?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 28/06/2018 06:23

Very complicated thing, class. If you are ‘self-made’, then I would describe you as working class. From what you say of your and your DH’s parents, I would describe you as middle class, possible upper middle. Unless you are aristos you are not upper clsss.

givemesteel · 28/06/2018 06:28

If you were upper class or upper middle you wouldn't have started this thread.

So I'd say middle middle with aspirations to be upper middle.

Mummadeeze · 28/06/2018 06:31

I don’t understand why you have listed all your assets to ask people what class you are?!! Find it really really weird. Class has nothing to do with how much money you have. It is more to do with heritage, accent (to some extent), education and history of family career/lifestyle. How could anyone make a judgement on what class you are by you telling us you don’t have a mortgage and your children play musical instruments?!

isitfridayyet1 · 28/06/2018 06:31

This is such a bizarre thread. Why ask a question that you already know the answer to other than to boast Hmm

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/06/2018 06:35

May OP isn't British, that would explain much!

Oblomov18 · 28/06/2018 06:38

Class has nothing to do with all the things listed in your OP.
It just seems boastful.

DaphneDiligaf · 28/06/2018 06:47

I find the whole "Let's talk about me" theme quite sad actually.

ScreamingValenta · 28/06/2018 06:47

Should chips from the chippy be in newspaper?

Oooh, yes!

Do your parents/grandparents shake their heads sadly at the mention of Thatcher and quite mutter, "that bitch"?

No - they tend to mock politicians generally, but have no special hatred for Maggie.

Is Spain Costa del UK a desirable holiday destination?

No - I like camping holidays.

Do you "do" cities when you travel?

Yes

Did your family connections get you where you are, fancy job and/or jail?

No

What would you choose, lavender fields or a vineyard?

Vineyard!

ScreamingValenta · 28/06/2018 06:48

Forgot to bold all of those as I became too absorbed in answering them.

Clionba · 28/06/2018 07:39

Class isn't your income, house or ponies. Anyone can aquire those, even Del Boy.

BigPinkBall · 28/06/2018 08:10

According to the BBC quiz I’m established middleclass, daughter of two university graduates with professional middle management jobs and I go to the theatre/listen to classical music etc. but I live in an ex-council house and love walking down the high street eating a Greggs pasty, so who knows?

Luxembourgmama · 28/06/2018 08:20

Do you put brown sauce on a fry?

Aus84 · 28/06/2018 08:24

There is way more to it than what you have listed. I remember seeing some ridiculous class survey once and it was very thorough and the questions were about music preference, how often to you go to the Ballet vs how often you would go to a music festival. It listed famous people (dead and alive, celebrities and history) and you had to tick how many you had heard of etc, level of education so on and so on. It wasn't just about what your house was worth.

Geez, my house is worth a shed load of $$$ but thats simply because we bought it a long time ago and the area has boomed since then. Lots of people around me own several ponies and horses. My children play musical instruments. My household income is higher than yours but we still have to work. I would consider myself working class.

I would agree with the majority and say you are working class too.

RoseWhiteTips · 28/06/2018 08:27

Clionba

In a nutshell, yes.

WaitrosePigeon · 28/06/2018 08:30

You’re talking bollocks but i’ll play.

I’d say you’re cringe class.

FriendlyOcelot · 28/06/2018 08:32

If your ponies are in livery you aren’t upper class. Even if you live in Westminster, because they would be housed on your country estate. Hth.

RoseWhiteTips · 28/06/2018 08:33

The xx shows only this:Biscuit
Why are people engaging in any meaningful way?

Aus84 · 28/06/2018 08:33

Haha, just read the rest of this thread - too funny. OP seemed to adjust the way she wrote as she went - moving her way up the class system.

crispysausagerolls · 28/06/2018 08:38

Shenizzle, even in the “new class system” which has more of a basis in profession and money, you aren’t the top class (Elite).

I am assuming OP is a troll though.

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 28/06/2018 08:39

Isn’t discussing money considered very low class in the uk?

I’m not upper class. I’m not even upper middle class, so I don’t know. You sound rich though... is that what you wanted so desperately to convey? Job done. Good for you Hmm.

ReginaPhalange20 · 28/06/2018 08:45

You've obviously come here to brag and also make yourself feel better because you're disappointed by what your friend said.
Does it matter? You have a nice home and a happy family while some people can't afford their home and can't afford to feed their family. Just be grateful you live a nice life and stop worrying about class. It really is tasteless.
