To think this behaviour regarding Pope's visit to Ireland is despicable

The Pope is visiting Ireland in August and two public Masses will be held. For Health and Safety reasons numbers attending have to be limited so free tickets are being allocated, on line, on a first come first served basis.

People who object to his visit are deliberately buying up thousands of tickets, booking in fake coach tours etc to ensure a low turn out and, in the process, deny tickets to those who want to attend.

AIBU to think that, whatever your religious beliefs, this is petty, vindictive, intolerant and downright despicable behaviour>

I think it's brilliant. Thanks op for telling me about it 😁

I've just ordered 12 tickets. In addition to all the horrors mentioned by pp's, the fact that all reference to same sex parents was removed from all literature and social media for the gathering of families, or whatever it's called, is abhorrent. Add that to the comments by various clergy regarding the recent referendum and it's obvious the church hasn't changed a bit.

@PigEyedHorseFrightener

Always loved that quote. Can’t remember if it’s by Dawkins, but I know it features in The God delusion.

MiggledyHiggins · 26/06/2018 16:37

if the clergy are going to be political, they can't complain when they're targeted by political movements.

Exactly.

PigEyedHorseFrightener · 26/06/2018 16:48

Paddy - that might be where I know it from 😁

PigEyedHorseFrightener · 26/06/2018 16:50

The church is and always has been a cesspit of immorality.

The bible is a handbook on how to suppress your reason and humanity.

keyboardkate · 26/06/2018 16:55

The number of tickets bought for non use will have little effect on the numbers attending IMV.

There are 500,000 tickets available AFAIK and it's an international event. Anyway protesting like this is not going to help the protesters. No one will know much about their protest really, or care. Certain people just want to go see the event no matter what.

The time to protest was when that ridiculously odious man Pope Benny was in charge. I am sorry, but I have never seen a face that looked more sinister and perhaps evil in my life. But he is gone now.

Anyway, to atone, the CC should immediately allow ordination of women and married priests. That would be something else!

Now where did I leave my rose tinted specs?

BeetsOfSugar · 26/06/2018 17:07

You can't get a thread deleted because you don't like people views. People have said what they think you can't then stamp your feet and get it deleted because people aren't agreeing with you.

StripySocksAndDocs · 26/06/2018 17:26

What's wrong with it? There's still plenty of tickets available despite it. No one's going without.

SilverySurfer · 26/06/2018 17:27

I'm neither Irish nor catholic but had I been both and had been sexually assaulted/raped by a priest, I would think an apology from the PM to be an empty gesture. The only apology I would want would be from the bastard priest. Not to enable me to forgive and forget but to then see him and all the other scum arrested, convicted and put in prison for the rest of their lives. Instead what happens? They are shuffled off to a new area with a new congregation and the abuse continues.

The problem then is it doesn't stop there does it. How many parents, teachers, social workers, family members knew and did nothing? They should hang their heads in shame.

As for the buying up of tickets, good on them. Is there any estimate of how many children were abused? It must be a large number and if every one of them bought tickets it may teach the Pope a lesson.

PaddyF0dder · 26/06/2018 17:31

Heh heh. I just picked up 12 tickets to NOT go see Popey McPopeface.

Thanks OP. If not for your post I’d never have known!Smile

SilverySurfer · 26/06/2018 17:38

Aww I missed the flounce and request for MNHQ to pull the thread.. Please don't MNHQ this is a very interesting subject and OP, while you have flounced, bet you're still reading Grin

Moonkissedlegs · 26/06/2018 17:39

Still struggling to understand what this 'protest' actually achieves tbh. It won't tell anyone anything about the strength of feeling against Catholicism in Ireland, because no one will know how many people 'protested' nor will they know how many people would have turned up if they could.

A bog standard peaceful protest would probably be more effective wouldn't it?

StripySocksAndDocs · 26/06/2018 17:40

"Yes that's all gone on and that is not Catholicism that is people acting in the name of Catholicism"

Not sure it's all gone though. Even if it has, it's not go long enough and the Catholic Church isn't sorry enough. The hurt is still to raw. The anger still too strong.

Members of the church (that's you op) need to move heaven and earth (pardon the pun) to get those in charge to actively make amends. Accountability of the regions orders and paying the consequences needs to occur.

While those who want to call themselves Catholic and part of the congregation bury their heads in the sand that won't happen. You can't pretend it away or ignore it.

SilverySurfer · 26/06/2018 17:41

If there's one attendee per 10 seats I think that would send quite a strong messaged, don't you?

StripySocksAndDocs · 26/06/2018 17:43

I think it's to make it seem as if there's a lot of people going. Then there's far fewer than expected on the day. Expectation that holy Catholic Ireland is still there, with the visual.realisatin it's not.

Contrabassista · 26/06/2018 17:47

"Yes that's all gone on and that is not Catholicism that is people acting in the name of Catholicism"

Funny because it was blokes in frocks who worked at the Catholic Churches who called themselves “father” and would rape children. Still dying to hear back from our resident Angola expert who has never actually been there and quotes a Catholic webpage to back up Catholic atrocities. I do not appreciate being called a liar when I spent two years of my life dealing with the catastrophic genocide caused by catholic doctrine on contraception and aids.

Moonkissedlegs · 26/06/2018 17:50

Expectation that holy Catholic Ireland is still there, with the visual.realisatin it's not.

But that 'visual realisation' doesn't mean much if the only reason no one is there is because some people bought all the tickets so people who actually wanted to go, couldn't go?

keyboardkate · 26/06/2018 17:57

Look, the organisers will just move the deckchairs on the Titanic and move people up front and take away the empty chairs, if the numbers look smaller than anticipated.

There is no way this protest will impact on the overall attendance though I think. There are people visiting from all over the World and many from UK and Europe I'd imagine.

Anyway, who cares really, it's their gig, and if they hadn't anticipated something like this happening, they must not have said their prayers on time!

A friend who lives in Dublin said she would not even contemplate going even though she lives close enough to the event. Roads will be closed, it will take a minimum of FIVE hours to get to see the Pope when distance from entry points are factored in etc. I think the long day might just put some people off.

But anyway. We shall see.

PinguPaws · 26/06/2018 17:58

Yes, I love that Dawkins quote. Basically most people try to do good, and bad people don't or don't care.
There is no book in any religion or belief system, that needs to reinforce that.

PinguPaws · 26/06/2018 18:04

@keyboardkate lol, my friend lives close to the park and it's loud acoustics, best thing he can do is close the bloody windows.

wendiwoowho · 26/06/2018 18:06

Many people within the Catholic Church are calling for justice, there have been apologises within the church. Nothing will ever be good enough, nothing can justify that amount of evil. What happened was unacceptable, and disgusting. People aren't burying their heads in the sand.

Students going into the priesthood all have to go through psychological tests now. Unfortunately there is no way of knowing who is truly evil.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 26/06/2018 18:10

"Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion."
Dawkins was paraphrasing Steven Weinberg, a Nobel Prize winning physicist.

Look, the organisers will just move the deckchairs on the Titanic and move people up front and take away the empty chairs, if the numbers look smaller than anticipated. Didn't Trump try to do that at his inauguration? He ended up looking even more of a fool over that.

Sign me up for some of those empty seats!

123MothergotafleA · 26/06/2018 18:12

The game is up for the Catholis Church in Ireland for sure. And what about the latest stinking scandal from Spain? babies being sold/ made " gifts" of.

StripySocksAndDocs · 26/06/2018 18:15

Moonkissedlegs there are plenty of tickets available. Those that want to go can.

I'm only assuming this is the idea behind the protest. Only came to my attention when the OP notified us it was happening.

@wendiwoowho I think they are burying their heads in the sand. Pretending it wasn't really Catholicism etc.

It's far too soon to think people should be grateful for the teeny number that are trying to to something. I mean a teeny number out of all those that call themselves Catholic, not just clergy. Too many want everyone to shut up and forget it all because it's in the past. Supposedly.

keyboardkate · 26/06/2018 18:16

wendiwoowho

There are only one or two MEN only..... entering the CC seminary these days.

The lights are going out. But the CC remains a fabric of society in Ireland (and in parts of the UK too it has to be said). It is where people meet each other once a week for Mass and have a chin wag or have a look at the new car someone is driving, or who is getting married, who is preggers, what is s/he wearing etc. and getting above their station! It is a social event as much as religious, particularly in rural areas.

There is a lack of priests though. But neither the previous incumbent Benny, nor the current Frankie seem to even contemplate allowing women to become priests. They can clean the church though no bother!
