To be devastated at losing an envelope with £500 cash in it?

northernlights0710 · 24/06/2018 13:37

Short version: On Friday a friend gave me £500 they owed me in cash, in an envelope. Within the space of 24 hours I have no idea where it is.

My memory is terrible and I often wonder if I've got early onset dementia (I'm in my 50s).

I was nervous getting this money in cash as I don't like having large sums on my person. I would have preferred it put straight into my bank account. But the person who gave me the money didn't want to do that.

I had a feeling that I was going to lose the money. Perhaps I manifested this thought into reality.

I'm gutted and feel sick.

What's the largest sum you've ever lost and how long did it take you to get over it?

I'm sure you're not interested but if you are, here are further details:

When my friend gave me the money (in my home) I was rushing to get out of the house and so I think I left it at home (I live alone) then went to the dentist and then to work.

I remember counting it so that must be when I came home from work. But I just cannot remember where I put it! I had a builder I didn't know coming the next day so started to put credit cards away etc. I still don't know what I did with the cash.

Next morning I looked for the cash in the place I thought I'd left it and it wasn't there. This was before the builder got here, so he's not responsible.

I have looked in all the places it might be, and even went through the rubbish and recycling but it is nowhere. I rang the dentist and the pharmacy but they said nothing had been handed in.

Finally, lesson learnt. I will never again accept cash payments in a large sum. I will insist on a bank deposit.

Great news. See, I told you it was findable Grin

I was left some shares in a will in the late 1990s. At the time they were worth £25,000. I didn't really know anything about shares (i.e., how to sell them) and didn't "need" the money immediately, so I didn't do anything about it. I also assumed they would keep increasing in value. Well, the company crashed and today those shares are worth precisely £200.
I could have got a deposit on a flat, rented it out and it would be paid off by now!
I used to lose sleep over it but I think I'm over it now.

GinandGingerBeer · 25/06/2018 14:19

Rednailsandnaeknickers · 25/06/2018 14:49

Delighted you found it OP!! That's great news!

northernlights0710 · 25/06/2018 15:45

Laughing at all these jokes about my passport: I have to rush off to work folks, but I'll be back soon.

Cloud illusions, I'm so, so sorry to hear your story. You poor thing. I'm glad you've got over it. Money isn't everything.

As I said, my ex died of cancer only two months ago, aged 52. He had hundreds of thousands in the bank. I know he would have given it all away for more time with his new wife and child.

Oh phew! So glad for you OP.

londonista · 25/06/2018 18:03

Ah happy ending - well done OP.

On a slightly related issue, I recently bit the bullet and spent £420 on a pair of varifocals glasses that I desperately needed, and yep, within a week I've lost them somewhere.

I am so cross with myself, I can barely speak! I hadn't even gotten around to doing the very sensible thing of putting my name inside the glasses case, they were that new. I need to sit down and calmly retrace my steps.

jade9390 · 25/06/2018 18:07

So sorry. I am forgetful, thanks to a thyroid issue but it is not always me. I moved into a new house and knew I put my passport in a kitchen drawer, did not suspect it fell out the back as I did not think they would be so shoddy and missed a holiday. I searched everywhere, Found it when I used all the crockery in the cupboard underneath, So check behind and under things, could have slipped through gaps. People should never give cash, when we have so many methods of paying money back now.

Knittedfairies · 25/06/2018 18:15

Brilliant news! So pleased for you.

Oh I am so happy to have read you have found it! Once I cottoned on to you had, as I skipped to the last page, after a few pages, I had to go back page by page through the thread to see the details of it all. All's well that ends well. Check it out with your Dr if you will feel better. However it is something that can happen at any age, in a distraction moment

OJZJ · 25/06/2018 18:25

Northernlights not to be overly suspicious....but could there be a chance your friend took it back when you weren't looking? Speaking from experience sadly

ISnappedAndFarted · 25/06/2018 18:27

My ex stole about £12,000 from me.

I find the best way to deal with it is to just not think about it.

ISnappedAndFarted · 25/06/2018 18:27

Ooo should have RTFT congrats!!!

OJZJ · 25/06/2018 18:28

northernlights Easy come easy go I guess. Or so I kept telling myself! :-)
Glad you found your money.

toxic44 · 25/06/2018 18:52

I've done this. Remembering having a thing in my hand and then total blank. It's horrible. What works for me is to go to the spot I remember having it in my hand. I close my eyes and try to take myself 'back' to that moment. Just let your feet go where they want, slowly. Say aloud what you're 'seeing' in your head - it is all in there somewhere. I've found things like this because I've done something that I haven't consciously recorded. Replaying on slow helps the info surface. It sounds weird, I know. It works for me. Good luck.

Loreleigh · 25/06/2018 19:04

I seem to have developed a habit of losing things and finding them in daft places - if you were in a rush and juggling several things, try looking inside a few favourite books, the fridge/freezer or other places relating to whatever you were up to on those days - probably one of those 'safe places' you forget to ever look again. Sometimes the more obvious places are a good bet - your handbag/shopping bag (did you change bags?) Coat pockets, pockets in things hanging in the wardrobe, underwear drawers, linen cupboard etc. Good luck and I hope you find it soon.
