To be devastated at losing an envelope with £500 cash in it?

northernlights0710 · 24/06/2018 13:37

Short version: On Friday a friend gave me £500 they owed me in cash, in an envelope. Within the space of 24 hours I have no idea where it is.

My memory is terrible and I often wonder if I've got early onset dementia (I'm in my 50s).

I was nervous getting this money in cash as I don't like having large sums on my person. I would have preferred it put straight into my bank account. But the person who gave me the money didn't want to do that.

I had a feeling that I was going to lose the money. Perhaps I manifested this thought into reality.

I'm gutted and feel sick.

What's the largest sum you've ever lost and how long did it take you to get over it?

I'm sure you're not interested but if you are, here are further details:

When my friend gave me the money (in my home) I was rushing to get out of the house and so I think I left it at home (I live alone) then went to the dentist and then to work.

I remember counting it so that must be when I came home from work. But I just cannot remember where I put it! I had a builder I didn't know coming the next day so started to put credit cards away etc. I still don't know what I did with the cash.

Next morning I looked for the cash in the place I thought I'd left it and it wasn't there. This was before the builder got here, so he's not responsible.

I have looked in all the places it might be, and even went through the rubbish and recycling but it is nowhere. I rang the dentist and the pharmacy but they said nothing had been handed in.

Finally, lesson learnt. I will never again accept cash payments in a large sum. I will insist on a bank deposit.

Have you checked down the side of the cushion of the chair you were sat in when you were counting?

We lost our spare car key once - worth 150 quid. I put it somewhere safe while we went on holiday. We found it about 4 years later. Stuff does show up sometimes.

northernlights0710 · 25/06/2018 02:20

And finally just another little update of stuff I HAVE found so far.

A jewellery box containing lock of my dearly departed mother's hair, along with a small silver cross she bought me for my birthday - I still need to get a chain for it.

Birthday cards from my niece when she was little, written in her clumsy child's handwriting with clumsy pictures of houses and trees and me, saying how much she loved me. Now a teenager, she mostly ignores me, hahaha.

A lovely sparkly necklace that a friend bought me for my birthday

Some volcanic sand I brought home with me from a black sand beach in Iceland

Some headphones that will come in handy.

And some pieces of paper with the following written on them in my handwriting:

"Ask and you shall receive"

"Be persistent in acting as if it's impossible to fail"

Yay! But also, on a slightly less positive note:

"Even in your most desperate, frustrating and challenging times, you need to keep on keeping on." (American Dr Phil)

"When you're going through hell, keep going" (Winston Churchill)

And some travel adaptor plugs for my holiday in a couple of weeks.

Pillows mattress bathroom cabinet? Please tell me you find it. Under the sofa. I feel so upset for you. I lose things all the time.
Would you have been thinking of really hiding it or did you just put it away somewhere?

TheMaddHugger · 25/06/2018 03:18

OK, Glad to hear that. It's gotta be somewhere in the house then. (((Hugs))) and Good Luck

Moneyissue2 · 25/06/2018 03:23

Are you actually going away in a couple of weeks?? If you get broken into you have your answer.

TheMaddHugger · 25/06/2018 03:29

Do you put things on your Microwave/oven or fridge.?? We've found weird &/Missing things behind them.

octoberfarm · 25/06/2018 03:38

Not sure if this has been mentioned already but have you checked pockets of everything you were wearing, as well as the laundry and inside the washing machine/dryer if you have one? I lost something once and found it embedded in a groove inside the rim of the dryer door. Never thought I'd find it, and least of all there!

Also, astounded by your positivity and how you chose to focus on all the lovely things you have found. Have a wonderful trip to the US, and wishing you all the luck in finding your money, you sound lovely Thanks

northernlights0710 · 25/06/2018 03:45

I thought of what you were all saying to me - look in the places you wouldn't normally look or imagine.

I prayed to St Anthony to guide me to my money.

I went through the rest of the cupboards in my living room - that was the living room completed.

So moved on to do the rest of the bedroom , which I'd partially searched previously.

Went through all my bedroom drawers. Then went back to the suitcase and searched it for the umpteenth time. Nothing.

Then, I have one of those kind of fabric hanging shelves thingies that you buy from Ikea - with bras in the top section, knickers in the next, then regular socks, then "specialist" socks (hiking, running, skiing etc).

And finally, I keep sets of pyjamas in the bottom one.

I was turfing it all out shelf by shelf, then putting it all back, thinking "it's 3 o'clock in the morning. I must be bloody mad."

Then I got to the last shelf - the pyjamas shelf - and there it was stuffed underneath at the very bottom of the clothes.

I was so excited I ran around the flat, then lay on my bed on my back and kicked my legs in the air repeatedly in excitement and joy.

Thank you, thank you and THANK YOU again EVERYBODY.

For helping me to stay positive and not give up; for helping me with tarot cards; for advising me to invoke St Anthony - IT WORKED - and for advising me to look in crazy places. And to those who said: "It's within X no of feet" etc. Well, it WAS! It was 2 ft away from the place I kept going back to - the suitcase under the bed.

Thank you to those who supported me when I was told that I was careless and couldn't manage my affairs properly. And to those who advised getting Vitamin B12 and talking to the doctor about my bad memory.

And thank you to those who commiserated with their own sad stories of lost valuables and money. I'm so sorry and I truly understand how you feel.

Finally, how the hell did I come to hide the money under my PJs????? I have no recollection of it. I wasn't drunk - I was totally sober. There is no logic to that whatsoever. It must have been because I was rushing.

The money is now in my big, red purse and I'm going to bank it first thing in the morning!!!!!

A really big THANK YOU to everyone - you ALL helped me in your own way!!!

Wow, just like the sydney fireworks, Mad Hugger (which I've seen a few times). I suspected you were in Oz because it's now 4.07am here and only crazy folks or shift workers or mums! are up now in the UK.

northernlights0710 · 25/06/2018 04:10

Hi Monty - thank you so much for caring, along with all of the other posters who encouraged me. You all really lifted me and encouraged me after I'd written off the money as a lost cause. Almost like a great big, huge psychic kind of mass Mumsnet channelling!!!!!

That's also why I wrote that I've got the cash now in my big red purse, so that if I forget, I can come back here and you lovely folks will remind me Smile Smile Smile Smile
