To hate this English Summer and the boiling hot weather we’re having?

IHateSummer2018 · 24/06/2018 11:29

It’s so hot! Appallingly so. I am in the lightest of t shirts and yet still sweating. I love the sun on holiday but hate it in this country, it seems more a blistering kind of heat, disgustingly so. Hope the summer ends very soon! Bring back Autumn/Winter!!

NC because people display negativity to those that dare say they hate the sun

In the UK we still don’t seem to realise we need to be prepared for either Very hot or cold weather so that’s why we don’t deal with it very well.

That’s not the whole story though - we get so little very hot or very cold weather that being prepared in the form of air conditioning etc makes little sense.

Mogleflop · 25/06/2018 07:08

People in hot countries probably acclimatise better. The sudden leaps here don't do us any favours either.

GuntyMcGee · 25/06/2018 07:18

A couple of years ago I would have been the one complaining about the warm weather.

Being very pale skinned I burn in the slightest ray of sunshine and I couldn't bear being overheated. Hear rash, chub rub, hay fever, sun burn - I was miserable. Built for winter, me.

But I now do a job where I'm out and about in the car in all weathers I'm finding it much easier to cope with and I'm actually enjoying it. Hay fever is less hectic delis than it was last year and I'm loving the warmth - I wouldn't even call it heat at this point.

That said, I'm happy at around 20-23 degrees. I don't want it to go much hotter!!

LoniceraJaponica · 25/06/2018 07:29

I know I am stating the obvious here, but yesterday I saw so many women poured into skinny jeans.

Why?

Any form of tight fitting clothing makes you feel much warmer. I know because even wearing a loose cotton top vs tight fitting vest top made a huge difference to me.

How many heat haters are dressing appropriately for the weather?
In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter that you may suit a loose sleeveless top less than a jumper, as long as you are cool and comfortable.

Mogleflop · 25/06/2018 07:51

Could I ask that some of the language here is changed a bit? Some of us aren't so much heat-haters so much as heat-sufferers. I know that's a tiny point but it's not about resenting something, it's about something that makes some of us feel ill.

My guess is that most of us won't voluntarily spent a lot of time outside on the sun at all, let alone in jeans.

Personally I've spent a lot of money on light clothing including sports-gear aimed at coping in the heat, as this isn't just a few-week problem for me, it's a year round nightmare in my office.

I don't own skinny jeans or the like, (which is a shame as tight clothing is better on me sensory-wise) and spend most of my time hiding indoors semi-dressed in front of a fan where possible!

Why do so many people seem to assume others are lying to you somehow, or purposefully making it worse on themselves? Confused

IIIustriousIyIIlogical · 25/06/2018 08:05

I'm loving it & long may it continue.

We'll soon be back to the normal grey, cloudy & damp weather that suits so many MN'ers.

Let me bask while I have the chance.....

LoniceraJaponica · 25/06/2018 08:27

Good point about heat haters vs heat sufferers Mogleflop.

My point about wearing unsuitable clothing was based on yesterday's observations.

SadieHH · 25/06/2018 08:28

This is one of the things that bug me. People act like you're choosing to hate it, like someone said above, admitting you don't like it is akin to kicking puppies. It's about how well you are able to cope with the heat and some people can't. I faint in the heat, I just do. And I have a job where I have to be out in the midday sun with no shade, which is fine between Sept and April. And you lot telling me that 'it's not that hot' or it's 90°c in Australia doesn't stop me feeling faint. I take all the precautions I can - loose clothing, water, a sunshade umbrella and a handheld fan, but it didn't help me last week and I doubt it'll help me this week. But that's ok, I should just get over it.

Silversun83 · 25/06/2018 08:42

Also hating it here.. I hated the heat before.. getting sweaty (and my BMI is only 21 so no extra padding! Grin), all the flies, the heat at night etc etc.. but now have a 2- year-old and 3-month-old and it just makes life so much harder.. Keeping them cool, finding shade whenever we go out, them not sleeping as well, applying suncream.. My 2-year-old doesn't seem to react very well either.. we were at the playground for an hour from 9.30-10.30 the other day (so not peak sun!) and fair enough she was running around a lot, but it actually made her sick.. And I'm pretty sure it was the heat as it happened a few weeks ago too.. She's very high-energy so has to get out every day..at least in the winter all you need to worry about is making sure they have on enough layers!

And for those saying it's only early 20s.. I know that and it shouldn't feel so damn hot but it does! I think it might be because the 'feels like' temp is higher..

I think it's the constantness that people are complaining about.. it's pretty much been like this since Easter so there's been no respite.. Which is not normal for the UK!

And no, not a winter-lover either.. Spring and Autumn are my go-to seasons!

Oliversmumsarmy · 25/06/2018 08:57

We heat lovers have maybe 6 weeks per year so let us bask in the sun.

You cold lovers have 10+ months of grey miserable skies.

Leave us to it to enjoy for a few weeks.

You will have the depressing weather back soon enough.

IIIustriousIyIIlogical · 25/06/2018 08:59

But that's ok, I should just get over it.

Yes, you should - what other choice is there?

I accept that.

Doesn't mean I want to listen to people yowling about it for odd day (week if we're lucky) where it's the case though.

Put up & shut up - like I have to do in the Winter.....

Oliversmumsarmy · 25/06/2018 09:03

I am a cold sufferer.

Arthritis kicks in. Depression when I look at the grey skies. Not being able to work.

I can never really appreciate the sunny weather properly as I have to fit so many jobs info a few weeks per year.

ATM I have to do the garden, paint all the outside walls of the house and the windows of the house before the grey skies set in.

missmouse101 · 25/06/2018 09:04

Except people don't 'put up and shut up' in winter. They constantly whine about how it's 'freezing' and ramp up central heating whilst wearing thin clothes.

The80sweregreat · 25/06/2018 09:18

missmouse, exactly, the cold whingers are worse than people like me that have to endure this really hot weather. in the south east the winters are not normally that drab or grey to be honest, we had a bad week in March with snow and ice but it soon disappeared and the rest of the time the weather wasnt that bad really, yet its all 'its soo cold, i hate it ' whinge whinge whinge!! at least you can make yourself warm, you cant make yourself cold.
it is good for the washing as it dries in a few hours, but thats all thats good for me.
I would love it a bit more if i had a home with a pool or air con, but i don't and never will.

pacer142 · 25/06/2018 09:22

We heat lovers have maybe 6 weeks per year so let us bask in the sun.

Well said. I'm no "heat lover" but I enjoy warmer weather. Yes, I sweat but wear looser/lighter clothes and change during the day - no big deal. Just do less physical things at the heat of the day - i.e. I'll do the ironing/vacuuming/diy/gardening either first thing in the morning or in the evening. If I have to go out mid day, I just wear a decent hat and try to keep in the shade as much as possible (sometimes as easy as walking on the other side of the road).

Sometimes, you can make things worse for yourself, i.e. air con, fans etc work short term, but when you go back into the real "hot" world, you'll feel hotter and worse for it. When we used to go on holiday, we'd regard air con for the accommodation and car as essential, but it just meant we were reluctant to go outside and started spending more time in the air con than outdoors, keeping doors/windows closed etc., without us realising it. Then one particularly hot holiday (Cyprus in July! - what were we thinking?), we found ourselves with broken air con - we had to leave all doors and windows wide open, and what really surprised us what that after the first day or two, we didn't notice the heat anymore - it was a lot more pleasant and we found ourselves outside more on the patio etc and even walking to restaurants instead of driving. Ever since then, we've not really bothered with it. The more you "fight" the heat, the more you suffer - just go with the flow and be sensible, do less, wear appropriate clothes, find shady spots and most people will enjoy it (obviously except those with health related issues).

CurbsideProphet · 25/06/2018 09:22

What baffles me is all the people complaining that we hardly ever get warm weather. Here in Lancs we have had to water our garden most days for the past 8 weeks and there's no sign of the weather abating.

Last year May - July were hot and sunny here, then again in September. If people want more than that they should look at emigrating.

marymoosmum · 25/06/2018 09:43

I agree. I hate it. I am the first to say it's too hot. Anything over 20 degrees and I'm miserable, especially during the hayfever season.

Oliversmumsarmy · 25/06/2018 09:54

We are down south and last year my heating went on in August.

And yes terminally ill dp aside I am thinking of emigrating.

I know I cannot do another winter in this country.

In winter I am crippled. I can barely walk.

Yet...
Yesterday I cut down loads of brambles in a very over grown garden (1/4 of an acre) and gave the lawn a first cut. Grass and weeds were higher than me I scythed them down from first.

I know in probably less than 8 weeks time I will return to my half life of hobbling around in great pain

Loyaultemelie · 25/06/2018 10:00

Our crops don't like it at all we can't irrigate them all and could potentially lose our livelihood if the forecast is right and no rain here within a fortnight. The temperatures themselves aren't the problem it's the dryness. Also my migraines don't like it. Mind you if we weren't working to try and survive and could just be in the garden with the pool and a glass of wine I quite like it.

SoupDragon · 25/06/2018 10:18

Last year May - July were hot and sunny here, then again in September. If people want more than that they should look at emigrating.

Equally true (and as impractical) for those who want less!

busybuildingdens · 25/06/2018 10:35

I find it very bizarre that people think that others moaning about the weather somehow ‘spoils it’! It doesn’t stop it being hot and sunny! I love the variety of our weather, but my favourite is a really really cold day, or really torrential rain. However, I think we only get a few of those days a year, the rest are actually just mediocre. But I still don’t jump on people who moan about the rain or the cold. It doesn’t spoil it for me in any way!

SoupDragon · 25/06/2018 10:46

I love the variety of our weather

I do too - eventually you’ll get some weather you like if you wait long enough. It would be nice if they could arrange for it to rain overnight though and not in the daytime.

KneesupGaston · 25/06/2018 10:52

I hate the warm weather because it makes me feel guilty about being a sloth. I'm just not a doer.

TimeToDash · 25/06/2018 10:53

YABVU! 😎
