Cultural appropriation

Londonerlove · 23/06/2018 17:32

AIBU to be totally annoyed by cultural appropriation.
I read this today and though wtf!

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/newsbeat-44572555

I’m not a fan of kim but if she wants her hair in braids she can have her hair in braids?

Shouldn’t this be praised rather than attacked?
Is eating pasta cultural appropriation?

Clothing or wearing a scarf, hijab, nikab or just basic shalwar kameez are considered as anti-social. What someone wears/doesn't wear shouldn't dictate how we see other people.

animaginativeusername · 26/06/2018 12:08

@Ohmydayslove agree with you there - schools should be just about education, religious practice should be kept out of state education. And Students should be able to wear whatever they want, I don't agree that schools dictate hairstyles, shoes etc.

Ohmydayslove · 26/06/2018 12:08

None of those items of clothing are antisocial of course not. My one exception would be the burkha because I think it’s generally agreed that it makes communicating more difficult but each to their own and a woman’s choice.

I think how you dress is a fairly strong statement on you as a person but surely that’s great isn’t it?

Food and clothes are no different it’s just with clothes it’s esdier to be professionally offended and target women.

Londonerlove · 26/06/2018 12:09

@tacolover do you find the dolmio advert offensive? Some do. So actually people are discriminated against for the food they eat. Have you never heard someone say ‘oh go eat some pasta’
How about cultures who are mocked as they don’t use cutlery?

OP posts:
Londonerlove · 26/06/2018 12:11

@tacolover or associate curry with an Indian culture?

Amen to that sister I hate school uniform and rules on hair and shoes ffs! I had 6 kids and was fascinated st their style statements.

I always pity teachers having to enforce this bollocks.

It would also be so much better for integration and social cohesion but it won’t happen because deep down most people prefer their own ‘type’

Again as you see on this thread preferring division to cohesion and embracing each other.

Human nature I suppose

Londonerlove · 26/06/2018 12:12

England’s National dish is chicken tikka masala. Is that cultural appropriation? We’ve taken a dish from a minority?

OP posts:
animaginativeusername · 26/06/2018 12:13

@Ohmydayslove they aren't anti-social but depending on people's interactions with other cultures the can clothing can be perceived as anti-social. For instance when I am out shopping in Leeds, and browsing in Harvey Nics (could never afford to buy from there) wearing shalwar kameez I am treated differently to when wearing jeans and top. Am followed around more when wearing traditional clothing, has happened a few times.

MariaMadita · 26/06/2018 12:14

The Italians actually copied pasta from Asia. Better put that plate of pasta down because you clearly don’t know it’s heritage

The Italians were inspired to develop their own versions... Copying clearly isn't the right word Wink

But why wouldn’t they want to? Religions are supposed to spread that’s the point of them.

On a more serious note... That actually depends on the religion. There are religions that don't proselytise, some don't make conversion easy/may actively make it difficult and there are even religions you have to be born into/ don't accept converts.

Londonerlove · 26/06/2018 12:15

@ohmy we regularly run cultural evenings in our school. Parents bring in dishes from their culture for all to try. I personally invited parents to come and read stories from their culture.

Hairstyles are a load of bollocks!

Londonerlove · 26/06/2018 12:16

@animaginative but yet if you wore a shalwar kameez in Harrods I can assure you you would have the opposite experience.

OP posts:
Londonerlove · 26/06/2018 12:17

@maria I should say ‘adopted’ but according to this thread that would be cultural appropriation.

OP posts:
animaginativeusername · 26/06/2018 12:17

Agree though people do stick to type, I suppose it's comfort and sense of safety. Growing up I thought I would move to an area which is equally balanced, but moved to pakistani prominent area due to the availability of shops, mosque all being local.

animaginativeusername · 26/06/2018 12:21

@Londonerlove really. Visited London a couple of years ago but didn't venture inside Harrods due to apprehension, thought more posh so more excluding. Will definitely pop in when time in London.

Londonerlove · 26/06/2018 12:22

@animaginative 100%.

London

It wasn't a serious comment... ;)

(Although Italian pasta really is not the same as Chinese noodles... Even though pasta was built on the concept of it, I believe. Italian pasta is apparently not the same as "British" pasta either... )

Have you never heard someone say ‘oh go eat some pasta’

No... What is it supposed to express?

Ohmydayslove · 26/06/2018 12:23

animanginativeusername

Oh I can quite believe that. Same as a young teen Is followed around the corner shop and I am not.

I am in no way attacking women wearing bhurkas I suppose I find them so mysogynistic as they are a fairly recent phenomenon it’s problamativ for me. Obviously covering up in the usual way has been so for centuries.

Londenerlove fantastic I bet everyone wants a try.

But if all schools were truly multicultural we would t need those events perhaps as the daily menu would reflect some of those dishes anyway. Who knows.

I do think building more free schools and faith schools is a huge mistake myself.

Ohmydayslove · 26/06/2018 12:25

Maria now that’s interesting what you say. You do assume converts are welcome but no you are right there.

Ohmydayslove · 26/06/2018 12:26

Bloody hell all this talk of food has made me hungry!

Londonerlove · 26/06/2018 12:26

@ohmydays our school menu definitely reflects that.

@maria I have heard that. In fact another one I heard is ‘how do you have sex, on a pizza’ then the person added actions. Not something anyone wants to see 🤢

OP posts:
Ohmydayslove · 26/06/2018 12:26

Sounds like you have a great atmosphere there London Smile

Londonerlove · 26/06/2018 12:30

@ohmydays 😂😂😂 to be totally honest these comments only come from the EDL lovers.
There’s racism everywhere, what I was trying to explain to gilead and strongmummy is that just because I’ve been subjected to racist abuse I’m not going to hate all English people. Be upset and offended by the comment but don’t generalise and let it go. Otherwise you will be filled with constant hate and resentment. Something that is emanating from a lot of posts.

OP posts:
MariaMadita · 26/06/2018 12:35

London but what does it mean? Is it about telling someone to be quiet/stuffing their mouth with pasta?

As for the pizza-sex. Bit messy but easy. Or are you supposed to only be on the pizza..?

You do assume converts are welcome but no you are right there

Yes. I mean, that is generally the Christian and Muslim perspective/approach... but Judaism (which is still closely related to these religions) already handles it differently.

Certain parts of Zoroastrianism and Druze are really on the other side of the spectrum. (Conversion isn't possible, I believe).

Ohmydayslove · 26/06/2018 12:36

Yes I agree Londonerlove 100% the more we share and interact and embrace however that’s done as long as it’s done with good intentions the better in my eyes.

I have to say wearing a sari to my friends wedding was honestly the most glam and princess like I have ever felt and my girls and I were welcomed whole heartedly.

I think it’s sad to think that just because I probably don’t know much about the origins of it would preclude me from wearing it. Quite the opposite as the lovejy lady fitting us was more then happy to fill us in.

In my view we need the women of all faiths and none to lead the fight against racism and division not build up more barriers.

Londonerlove · 26/06/2018 12:36

@maria I have no bloody idea 😂. They clearly felt as though it was offensive so decide to say it to see if they would get a reaction. They didn’t.
