Cultural appropriation

AIBU to be totally annoyed by cultural appropriation.
I read this today and though wtf!

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/newsbeat-44572555

I’m not a fan of kim but if she wants her hair in braids she can have her hair in braids?

Shouldn’t this be praised rather than attacked?
Is eating pasta cultural appropriation?

Poor you, having to worry about not generalising entire races and having some respect for the cultures of oppressed minoritiesSad

Londonerlove · 27/06/2018 19:40

@tacolover so white peoples can’t be subjected to racism?
The minority can generalise but the majority can’t?
I’ve never seen so many double standards in this thread.
If you’re so offended by CA you may want to boycott all supermarkets.
It’s ok for you to share your experiences but disregard any from a ‘majority’ 😂😂😂

@london I think it would be useful for you to see how many instances there are of racism by white people to non white people and then vice versa in the UK. I’d imagine it will be overwhelmingly that it’s non whites that are far more likely to suffer.

And for the 1000th time, buying non British food in a supermarket is not CA!!!

BertrandRussell · 27/06/2018 19:53

"After this thread I genuinely feel anxious about what I might say in case I offend someone"
Good-you've learned something then. The rest of us will just go on being friendly and respectful and not accuse others of being racists and spreading hate speech.

Londonerlove · 27/06/2018 19:55

@strongmummy why is it not CA?

OP posts:
Londonerlove · 27/06/2018 19:55

@bert the white v Black is definitely spreading hate!

OP posts:
BertrandRussell · 27/06/2018 19:57

Oh. I was wrong. You haven't learned anything. Shame.

MariaMadita · 27/06/2018 19:58

But is selling non-British food cultural appropriation? And if not.. why?

Londonerlove · 27/06/2018 20:02

@bert and neither have you 😩

Where in the fuckity fuck did I say thatGrin

Strongmummy · 27/06/2018 20:11

I’ve been through this so many times on here I’m not going to subject myself or anyone else to it again 🤣

MariaMadita · 27/06/2018 20:12

Ok. Just checking...

I could make, market and sell various kinds of ethnic foods and it wouldn't be cultural appropriation?

Strongmummy · 27/06/2018 20:12

@maria your point is an interesting one, and it probably is if your suppliers aren’t authentic I suppose

Strongmummy · 27/06/2018 20:14

@maria, my first exasperated post was not directed at you btw. Also I’m definitely not the arbiter of what is or isn’t CA. 🤣 These are just my thoughts

MariaMadita · 27/06/2018 20:22

@strongmummy

Which they're most likely not in most large-scale productions, I guess. (Even if they are there might still be discussion imo. What if they're Israeli? Iranian? Lebanese? I suspect that people from various cultures/countries might 'claim' certain products...)

If the suppliers not being authentic makes it cultural appropriation in my case...

Then idk. I guess I genuinely don't understand how the same principle wouldn't apply to supermarkets.

MariaMadita · 27/06/2018 20:23

strong

I totally thought it was. BlushWink

Strongmummy · 27/06/2018 20:23

@maria don’t start me off on Israeli hummus please. You’ll regret it 🤣🤣

Strongmummy · 27/06/2018 20:24

@maria and yes I agree with you

mozzybites · 27/06/2018 20:25

This makes no logical sense, either everything has to be produced by 'authentic' whatever that means, people or it doesn't matter. It can't be that large scale production isn't CA but small scale production is unless authentic.

MariaMadita · 27/06/2018 20:25

strong

But it's soo delicious GrinGrin

Nah, I agree. let's not polarise this thread even more by recreating various conflicts in the middle East (Shia - Sunni, Druze, Israel etc...)

@BertrandRussell

You are not a font of sacred, authentic knowledge, despite what you might think 🤣🤣

Strongmummy · 28/06/2018 08:05

@london READ the article you posted. It says the white middle class are choosing to self segregate. It also says that there’s a large black and Asian population who are disadvantaged.

BertrandRussell · 28/06/2018 08:09

@BertrandRussell

Grin Maybe not. But i’ve been round the block a few times, and I know racism when I see it.

IrmaFayLear · 28/06/2018 08:11

The thing is I think the holier-than-thou posters are coming across as very patronising - to the very people they purport to champion.

And all this talk of food origin etc... it's just idiotic. Buying hummus from authentic producers indeed! Is there anything more privileged than that!

There is a place for discussion of CA, and trivialising customs/symbols for fashion is questionable, but tying oneself in knots about food origin makes the more militant anti-CA people sound right daft .
