A lot of people in the Trade Union movement are grateful to the EU for supporting workers rights.

TU laws and recognition is significantly better in some EU countries and we want to work within the EU to change laws in the U.K.. Health and safety which makes Brexitiers froth at the mouth is bread and butter to the TU movement. H&S saves lives, EU regulations have saved lives, we do not want to return employers making the rules.

Leaving the EU will harm the interests of the working classes. I'll ask again, do you really think Johnson would support something that would actually help the poor?

LARLARLAND · 24/06/2018 09:31

If we hadn’t happily let our manufacturing industry go to shit maybe we would have had something to fucking trade.

time4chocolate · 24/06/2018 09:31

54321go yes agree I think if they go anywhere it will be China, Airbus want to have a foot in China as much as China want to have the business so its basically a no brainier. Could be an opportunity for Boeing?

Saying they probably won’t move out or they will likely limit investment is very different to saying they will pull out. The EU are also currently experiencing their own problems, the grass is not always greener on the other side.

Moussemoose · 24/06/2018 09:32

Totally agree about our manufacturing base. This is not an EU issue, it's a short sighted Tory policy issue.

LARLARLAND · 24/06/2018 09:33

My point Moose is where were the people who marched yesterday when we let the Tories dismantle our manufacturing industries? They didn’t give a fuck so that’s why I can’t take their protest seriously.

kalapattar · 24/06/2018 09:34

I really don’t believe a single word from posters who show concern about industry

Jobs are changing. We do need a much higher skilled workforce - and an education system that desperately needs investment and teachers who want to stay. The Conservative Government has its head in the sand about the education system.

The Conservative Government doesn't give a toss about education. It's well known that there are many areas outside of London where the system is failing - and it doesn't care.

My city is in the North. Its industries are skilled and need to trade with Europe and elsewhere as easily as possible. Brexit will potentially make this much harder.

Moussemoose · 24/06/2018 09:41

Education policy, especially Tory education policy, spectacularly fails white, working class, boys. They are one of the worst achieving sectors of society. We desperately need to tackle this issue. Brexit is a distraction or worse.

We are totally ignoring these issues because we are faffing around with Brexit. Long term, entrenched disadvantage is continuing with no discussion or attempt to reform - but don't worry we might get Brexit.

LARLARLAND · 24/06/2018 09:42

That’s exactly what upsets me Mousse and i actually think that suits a lot of people because it perpetuates the dominance of the the southeast middle classes.

54321go · 24/06/2018 09:49

@Larlar
I lived in the North and have seen the incredible waste created by previous governments through lack of investment. LONG before the EU.
When coal and iron were mined, European mines moved to better machinery, Britain kept on with pick and shovel.
The cotton industry around Manchester and the towns to the north of it at one stage made around 80 percent (sorry if a wrong figure I don't remember) of cloth. Some investment but not enough to compete when India geared up.
Post WW2 Europe rebuilt railways and moved to diesel, the UK put sticking plasters on the damaged bits and stayed with steam.
Most of these industries were basically asset stripped by 'investors' based in London who largely abandoned the old industrial areas and took their huge profits and invested elsewhere. There is a risk of this becoming a 'anti rich' rant, please carry on if you wish but through all this you should acknowledge that the EU is NOT the reason for our downfall.
@time4, I think China is already part of the consortium but is not currently tooled up to make wings specifically for Airbus.

surferjet · 24/06/2018 09:52

You’re talking crap.
This from a media report back in 2013

The failure of white boys to succeed at school is linked to uncontrolled immigration from Eastern Europe, Labour’s shadow education secretary has suggested
Tristram Hunt, the former television historian, said the low attainment of white British boys, particularly those living on England’s east coast, was linked to high levels of migration from the EU

JacquesHammer · 24/06/2018 09:54

Are there any studies to back this up? Or is this “media report” just one man’s opinion?

borntobequiet · 24/06/2018 09:58

“Linked to” doesn’t mean “caused by”.

kalapattar · 24/06/2018 09:58

You’re talking crap

So can you explain why immigration from Eastern Europe is linked to the attainment of white, working class boys?

Can you explain why white, working class boys are not achieving even when they live in areas where there is little immigration from Eastern Europe?

54321go · 24/06/2018 09:59

Even now with the railways, the private companies that promised great service have pulled out, breaking the deals because they weren't making enough PROFIT. To my mind a properly run country accepts that the basics, Water, electricity and transport are not run as a 'profit' source but as an asset to the nation. As long as investment to keep these industries running as efficiently as possible they should not be required to create EXCESS profit which simply goes into pockets of shareholders.
The North of Britain gets 30 year old (or more) recycled trains with a paint job.

Moussemoose · 24/06/2018 09:59

Respectfully - if Tristan Hunt did say that - it is total and utter bollocks.

Some of the places with the least immigration in the country, parts of the North East for example, suffer significant education deficits.

LARLARLAND · 24/06/2018 10:00

54432 I don’t know how long you lived in the North (student maybe) but I am from a mining/cotton town. I know that the problems are not caused by the EU Hmm Sometimes industry just simply has it’s day. That’s when strategic planning for the future should happen but the Tories and the rest of the UK population are happy to ignore it.

surferjet · 24/06/2018 10:01

Squirm your way out of THE FACTS all you like, it’s embarrassing at best.

Remainers couldn’t give a flying fuck about
poor white boys.

LARLARLAND · 24/06/2018 10:03

Tristan Hunt is a fucking joke. Parachuted into Stoke on Trent as an MO and bailed out when he got bored. Worst kind of career politician i’ve seen in a long time.

kalapattar · 24/06/2018 10:03

Squirm your way out of THE FACTS all you like, it’s embarrassing at best

Have you got any FACTs?

The fact is that education in this country is under funded. Areas of low immigration have very low results compared to the rest of the country.

Immigrants have nothing to do with the results of white working class boys in this country.

LARLARLAND · 24/06/2018 10:03

I grew surfer.

LARLARLAND · 24/06/2018 10:04

Don’t agree with immigration being a bad thing though!

Moussemoose · 24/06/2018 10:05

surferjet I am a remainer and I care quite a lot about the educational deficit especially in relation to working class boys.

You object strenuously to all Brexit voters being lumped together as racist or thick and then make sweeping generalisations yourself.

kalapattar · 24/06/2018 10:05

Remainers couldn’t give a flying fuck about poor white boys

When did Boris Johnson last mention this group in any of his speeches?

JacquesHammer · 24/06/2018 10:05

@surferjet

You haven’t proved any FACTS. You’ve provided conjecture. From the very quote you posted:-

The failure of white boys to succeed at school is linked to uncontrolled immigration from Eastern Europe, Labour’s shadow education secretary has suggested

You see the use of the word suggested?

Remainers couldn’t give a flying fuck about
poor white boys

Leavers are racist. Leavers are thick. See? Sweeping statements don’t work do they.

kalapattar · 24/06/2018 10:10

Sweeping statements don’t work do they

Cognitive dissonance. People complain when others use sweeping statements about them but then do the same thing to those people.
