School leavers hoodie is wrong

Namechangedforthispost18 · 21/06/2018 12:00

We ordered a school leavers hoodie for our dd, at a cost of nearly £20.
The PTA were in charge all proceeds going to the school, we recently changed DD surname however old surnames is now a middle name.

So we asked for previous surname and new one to be on it so the kids in class would know who it was and it would have the new surname we legally have to use on too.

The front has the initials on and is correct, both surnames.

The back is completely wrong.

They've left out punctuation within her name, and it only includes her old surname.

The school are claiming it is the PTA's fault, PTA are claiming it is a data protection issue (although it was handed from 1 person to the next to another) and that they couldn't clarify names however we confirmed it via facebook and have screenshots, we are not the only one to have a child with an incorrect name on the hoodie.

The pta and school are refusing to recall the hoodies or communicate with us or update us. Yet they've updated another parent and told them the wrong name will be scraped off and the right one stuck on top (it will look shit).

AIBU to expect all hoodies to be recalled and corrected? Her friends will have the wrong name on.

Also we the leavers are wearing theirs but the children without correct named hoodies have had them taken and are left out. This is causing other kids to laugh at these pupils.
The pta member who royally f up, her child is blaming the parents for giving her mother the wrong spellings etc and is intimidating the kids.

The school arent touching the issue with a barge pole.

Do I have rights as a consumer?

I'm only upset at the intimidation from the other kids, the rest is just unfortunate and annoying because how can a parent not given consent to have the data due to data protection proof the list of names and design?

Makes no sense

"Thankfully don't have any younger kids" -seems a bit extreme over a jumper but sounds like it has been resolved over the refund. Hope your DD enjoys her final weeks and trust me, all will be forgotten about very, very soon.

kierenthecommunity · 21/06/2018 14:28

Might be worth suggesting for next year they use first names only? Less checking and less chance of a balls up

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 21/06/2018 14:29

Oh, for the love of God... Hmm. She's leaving school, and you've recently changed her name. All her schoolmates will know her as the name they've known her as for their entire schooldays, surely??
Oh, and she'll wear it once. Twice if you're lucky.
You really need to try to see how little this actually matters.

Bombardier25966 · 21/06/2018 14:30

The poor volunteer lady deserves a big bunch of flowers. All that effort and she gets this in response.

Branleuse · 21/06/2018 14:31

Are you kidding me. You recently changed your dds surname for some reason, and now want everyone elses hoodie changed?

Everyone will still know exactly who it is, and your dd will know.

ghostyslovesheets · 21/06/2018 14:31

year 11 and I might have seen your point a little (although I still think it's a bit daft) but year 6! come on - it really isn't a huge deal

YorkieDorkie · 21/06/2018 14:31

You're clearly not "only upset at the intimidation". You wanted all the hoodies to be recalled.

Get another made for DD and worry no more.

Looneytune253 · 21/06/2018 14:32

Is everyone happy to pay again for their hoodies? I can’t imagine so. If you are happy to pay again that’s fine and order a new one but you can’t expect all the other parents to pay twice

southriding · 21/06/2018 14:32

Why don't you just scratch the surname off so it's not visible, and just her first name is on it? So she still gets a hoodie but it doesn't have her dad's name on it.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 21/06/2018 14:32

What intimidation from the other kids?

Shednik · 21/06/2018 14:33

Ours have only just been ordered mamadothehump !

Beenherebefore · 21/06/2018 14:37

Honestly, I get it's a bit annoying and that, but my daughter has a leavers hoody that she wears very occasionally and you don't read all the names anyway. The front is right, they all know who she is, her name is still on it, just a slight mistake on the back. Annoying, possibly even a bit upsetting, but in the nicest way possible, move on. x

C8H10N4O2 · 21/06/2018 14:37

The volunteer aspect is irrelevant, the item is faulty. Considering the reasons for the name change I can see DD is upset.

However the issue which I would prioritise with the school is this one:
The children have had their hoodies taken from them, the other 58 pupils have worn theirs all week and mocked the childs without

I agree with PPs who say these things end up at the back of a wardrobe very quickly.

When mine were this age they all wore old white shirts over their regular shirts for the last day of term. They all signed each others shirts in coloured pens and just kept them as a memento along with pictures form the playground. Is this an alternative?

Nearlyadoctor · 21/06/2018 14:37

Intimidated by the the other children???? As if they care

Miserysquared · 21/06/2018 14:39

Did you never notice that for the last year since you changed the name the correspondence from the school was coming to you with the wrong name on it?Has she been entered into her exams correctly, will her certificates and report cards be in the wrong name?

I think you are being massively dramatic, I also don't think 58 other kids are teasing or intimidating your hoody-less daughter, aside from anything else if mass bullying and insensitivity is permitted in the school then I fear for the type of kids being produced by it. If your daughter would not have bullied and harassed if the shoe was on the other foot then why are you so quick to believe this is happening.

It is an administrative error. They happen. I for one wouldn't be having my childs full name printed on a hoody for 60 people anyway if there is a strange family background, so they may have done you a favour. No one is going to notice or read the tiny print and as everyone else has said they will lie at the bottom of the wardrobe for years.

Just take the hoody so your daughter can put it on this week if she is so concerned. Her initials are correct which is the part people will be looking at.

Have a sit down and a nice cup of tea.

IrmaFayLear · 21/06/2018 14:44

This thread has cheered me up. Snorted my coffee out at the mental image of a menacing ring of pupils all chanting at the OP’s dd because of a missing hyphen on the back of a sweatshirt.

Nixen · 21/06/2018 14:48

Lol you’re being ridiculous.
A new hoodie for your DC, fine. No one else will give a shit and how incredibly wasteful - what should they bin all the other ones? And who pays for it all? Ridiculously precious

00100001 · 21/06/2018 14:52

I hope you realise the school will now ban the leaver hoodies because of some typos.
Thus whole year groups or more will be disappointed that they can't have hoodies this time next year.

00100001 · 21/06/2018 14:54

By creating a fuss over nothing this error, you are making it more difficult for everyone, and the PTA/School/whatever will just go "Fuck this for a game of soldiers - we're just trying to do something nice - never again!"

if the kids are bullying each other through lack of hoodies, the school should ban them anyway - what if a parent opts out for financial?CP reasons etc? Their child will be bullied? Sounds like a shit fucking school.

gamerchick · 21/06/2018 14:58

I hope you realise the school will now ban the leaver hoodies because of some typos

That's exactly what will happen. But I doubt the OP gives a shit about next year's kids.

Ridiculous and precious way to go on in a grown adult.

Glaciferous · 21/06/2018 15:00

I don't get this idea they only wear them once. DD has worn hers most days since she got it. She absolutely loves it.

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 21/06/2018 15:00

And this is why our school emailed us a link to the firm they were using and a reference number for the order so we could type the names in ourselves.

IShouldntPostBut · 21/06/2018 15:00

10 years from now they'll be using them to polish the car!

IShouldntPostBut · 21/06/2018 15:01

...or as a burp towel!
