To think Lord Sugar should be sacked from the BBC for his tweet?

BlondeSea · 20/06/2018 14:10

Earlier today Lord Sugar tweeted a photo of the Senegal football team with a caption along the lines of "I recognise these from the beaches in Marbella selling sunglasses!"

He doctored the image to add pictures of sunglasses. People challenged him online and he insisted it was funny and refused to apologise however since then he has apologised - he's obviously been forced to.

I won't add the image here, it's now been taken down but you can see it if you google it. AIBU to think this is disgusting, not funny, and he should be fired from the BBC?

This new "if you think sonething's racist then you must be racist. I'm not racist because I don't see racism" trope is fascinating.
Good to see the "calling all mumsnetters with black friends/husbands klaxon's working. It normally only goes off for gollywogs!

LuMarie · 20/06/2018 16:33

Outrageously racist.

If it was deliberately mocking - racist
If it wasn't directly deliberate but he thought it was funny - inherently a racist

Racism is an undercurrent and it is everywhere. Most incidents of racism come in this form, "jokes" that are in fact the empitomy of a racist mind

If it is racist and it comes from somewhere in you but you don't recognise it, you are still racist.

Also a bit concerned about the way a certain ethnicity have been described here... I'm not quoting it as I don't think it is acceptable, anyone else notice? (no not bloody Corbyn related)

Beep beep

It’s the mumsnet outrage bus. All aboard!

Moonkissedlegs · 20/06/2018 16:35

Its funny and not at all racist.

How is it 'not at all racist'? You are going to have to explain that one.

Seriously, I think sometimes on here people just say the exact opposite to what they are thinking just to cause a bun fight.

clownfaces · 20/06/2018 16:36

Of course it is racist. Thank you 68Anon but because your DH doesn't find it offensive, it doesn't mean I don't. He doesn't speak for all black people.

There are some incredibly ignorant views on this thread.

PMSL at the fact that Alf Garnett wasn't considered racist. Wasn't that the point of the show? Confused

StripySocksAndDocs · 20/06/2018 16:36

princesstiasmum there's plenty you can say that won't get you called racist. Plenty.

Even without they players being black, I've no clue what's funny. If it were the English player selling dodgy watches in a pub it's not making me laugh. Anyone care to explain?

RoseWhiteTips · 20/06/2018 16:38

That was not his sense of humour at work. What a crass thing to say.

TrudeauGirl · 20/06/2018 16:38

I don't see the humour in it at all. At his age he really should know better than to think that is an appropriate joke.

This is my stop, I'm getting off....

Not really.

Though there are those in the traditionally privileged group stopping, because passively derogatory comments (about those in a traditionally less privileged group) are being called out.

RoseWhiteTips · 20/06/2018 16:42

As AS himself is fond of saying to others, “Wot was you finkin?” Only this time he can address himself when he next passes a mirror. Lol

JellyBears · 20/06/2018 16:46

Gees stop being offended by everything!!!

IcedPurple · 20/06/2018 16:46

BBC have tweeted to say no action will be taken against Sugar because he has 'apologised unreserveredly.' Even though he twice defended his tweet as 'funny' and only issued a half-hearted 'apology' when - presumably - the BBC put pressure on him to do so.

NKFell · 20/06/2018 16:48

Crazy ignorance on this thread. Of course it's racist, it's not being 'sensitive' or pearl clutching or different humour, it's racist.

To the people who are outraged- GOOD!

Moonkissedlegs · 20/06/2018 16:49

I literally can't believe people don't think this is offensive? Aren't you embarrassed to basically out yourself as racist? Have some shame for gods sake!

misspriggy · 20/06/2018 16:49

If you say so.... But I fancy the adults amongst us would disagree

RoseWhiteTips · 20/06/2018 16:49

As for him being sacked, that is a daft idea. Jeez

IIIustriousIyIIlogical · 20/06/2018 16:52

Aren't you embarrassed to basically out yourself as racist? Have some shame for gods sake!

I'd be more ashamed if I was spouting puerile faux horror like half of the idiots on this thread.

bobstersmum · 20/06/2018 16:53

Let's just ban all humour because let's face it all jokes offend someone!

SlothSlothSloth · 20/06/2018 16:53

misspriggy: If we were in Africa and some African mocked the England team by comparing them to red faced trophy hunters or some such, you'd be so outraged?

I always seriously wonder what is going on in the poster’s head when I see comments like this. Maybe you can clear it up for me once and for all, misspriggy?

Are you totally unaware of the historical context and power dynamics in the example you gave (and in Alan’s tweet), or do you just choose to ignore all that because it doesn’t affect you?

misspriggy · 20/06/2018 16:55

IIIustriousIyIIlogical good summary. I'm getting off to, I shall pop back now and then to enjoy watching the dour, PC merchants getting their drawers in a knot over a silly joke..

Bobbydeniro69 · 20/06/2018 16:56

It's possibly one of the most clearly racist 'jokes' I've ever seen.

Obviously posted by someone with such inherent racist views that they didn't even stop to consider how offensive it was.

Sugar was Completely unapologetic until really forced to give a grudging statement which isn't an apology " I'm sorry people don't find it funny " is not an apology.

To the poster with a black African husband who found the tweet funny..I really don't know where his head is at if he thinks people with the same colour skin as him being demeaned and degraded in a social media post is acceptable.
