Horrified at the prospect of Trump choosing another Supreme Court judge - one that would certainly tip the scales in his favour. His base, of course, are over the moon - but I’m not really sure they quite understand what it could actually mean for their future, and their families’ future. Idiots.

lionheart · 28/06/2018 00:20

[flowers[ Net and no apologies needed. It is deplorable.

The same could be said about their decision to vote for him in the first place Claws.

www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/6/27/17510854/anthony-kennedy-retires-senate-confirmation

'Crucially, among those GOP senators are two pro-abortion rights moderates: Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, and Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Both have also proven willing to buck their party — for instance, they sank Obamacare repeal last year. Both also, however, voted in favor of confirming Neil Gorsuch.'

Minimammoth · 28/06/2018 06:53

Watch out for the Trump Putin peace pact. Russia and N Korea in the same year, what a guy. He must surely get the prize, which will of course be way way better than Obama.
I am now feeling more scared for future generations.

Longish read, but good explaner of repug distinction syndrome (apparently it's incurable; hopefully, it will be ultimate!y fatal):

‘I thought you were my friend’: Immigration meltdown exposes GOP hostilities
A seven-week effort to pass immigration reform ends in anger and distrust across the House Republican Conference.'

Just going to leave this thread here. Justice Kennedy may have seen the light before dawn and run. Seems he's a good friend of the Trump's/Kushners. Terminal recusal based on what may come to light?

NetofLemons · 28/06/2018 08:16

Thank you Lionheart. Also Flowers to you and all the others documenting reports and tweets on these threads.

I know that state sponsored abuse of children and babies via forced separation* from their mothers is (horrifyingly) not the only outrage going on here.

*’separation’ sounds such a euphemism for how must really be done- ripping the child away by force or abducting them by deception- ‘just taking them for a bath now..’.

With it be enough to overturn Roe v Wade with a new anti-choice judge in place?

lljkk · 28/06/2018 08:19

Madeleine Albright on R4 today programme right now plugging her book on modern rise of fascism. Humphries jerk is trying to make entire interview about Trump, which MA is fielding with grace. For those who might want to Listen-Again.

Sources say the more recently confirmed federal appeals court Judge Amy Coney Barrett is also under consideration to be among the 3-5 the President will interview for #scotus.

And Maddow, a steadying, encouraging voice, offering context and her usual thorough approach:

She is, mini , and recognises the danger of these times. A lot of people still need to wake up.

Woah,

Ethel Kennedy

McConnell then:

McConnell now:

He is an utterly ruthless and completely shameless political operator.

ohmymimi · 28/06/2018 09:43

Contrast that the 80 year old Ethel Kennedy's activism for the welfare of the most vulnerable, with Anthony Kennedy's craven retirement 4 months before midterms, with this POTUS/Congress. Unless he has a serious health problem, there is no justification. The consequences for women and health care could be devastating. History will not judge him kindly.

Lweji · 28/06/2018 09:46

A very intelligent, knowledgeable President (Full Professor of Law, from Portugal) and Trump.
Paraphrasing: "Would Ronaldo win against you for President? A: You know, Portugal is not the US"

(from min 6:00, more or less)

Trump said that he knows Bolton has met Putin through watching the media. No report yet. Hmm

He also did a reverse Trump handshake when they met. [laugh]

Lweji · 28/06/2018 09:48

I love his face at the end of the press meeting.

What he must be thinking...

He's a largely kind, approachable people's person. Who doesn't really want to tell Trump in front of the cameras what he thinks about "strong borders".

Trump puts kids in cages because he wants his wall. How low can he go? The authoritarian shitshow continues ...
ohmymimi · 28/06/2018 09:54

'Even Trump can’t screw this up’: Kennedy retirement unites GOP
The president hopes naming a new Supreme Court justice will return him to the high-water mark of the Gorsuch confirmation just in time for the midterms.

Sorry, can't face watching T. today, or hearing his voice, Lweji , but Rebelo de Sousa looks as if he wishes for the chair to swallow him up in one of those pics.

Lweji · 28/06/2018 10:09

Poor thing. His stomach must have turned during this visit.

This is a man who was recently pictured with an International Amnesty card saying "I welcome refugees".
