It gets me down. I don't feel like I can discuss with my parents, in laws etc because I get too emotional, and they get defensive, but when I hear them say things like "Trump is what we need", and some frankly racist comments, I feel so helpless. They're not going to change. But I want to challenge them. It's no excuse that they're from another generation, there ARE older people who are not racist!

I wish I could stop them reading the Daily Fail (have wondered about gifting a subscription to a different paper) and broaden their minds somehow.

I am still so bitter that my parents, my in laws and people I work closely with all voted for Brexit. How do I stop hating them all?!

Sorry, bit of a rant. Wish I could let it wash over me, but honestly I don't want to be around these people sometimes and would consider limiting my daughter's time with them.

OhLook maybe my statement should have been 'nobody that is psychologically normal votes to hurt anyone'

hairy acknowledging a detrimental effect, like a benefit cut or a tax rise, is not the same as voting to hurt or kill people, that's a conflation of two things that are not the same, even though you feel perhaps that they are.

Some dm readers are thick. Specifically the ones who read it and take it as gospel.
some guardian/independent/mirror readers are thick. Specifically the ones who read it and take it as gospel. Hmm

AsleepAllDay · 19/06/2018 14:33

The Daily Mail, the Sun etc have all given a platform to hateful people like Katie Hopkins who things refugees are cockroaches or Nigel Farage with his evil poster warning about floods of migrants. These papers are repeatedly responsible for airing some of the worst views about refugees, people on benefits, Muslims and so on. Anyone defending the tabloids needs to take a look at themselves

Campaign to bring them down. Start petitions. Though realise you would be supporting censorship. Other papers are out there for balance. We also have the Internet. There still remains the issue of those who take the DM for gospel. Again, that is their right. To force them to abandon their beliefs in favour of yours would be getting into murky waters. How would this be achieved? Brainwashing? Threats?

scaryteacher · 19/06/2018 14:44

We had a couple of dh's relatives to stay- they are life long Left wingers who voted Remain. I don't think they expected their views to be challenged quite so much - and they had no answers for our questions except vague platitudes. They weren't shocked that we didn't espouse Corbyn, as they've known for years that our side of the family is more to the right and votes Tory, but they were surprised that we'd voted Leave.

It's easy OP - you avoid politics, religion and money and talk about family, fashion, the weather and whatever sport interests you. Art and literature are good topics as well.

In what way did voting leave help the NHS?
Theresa May has promised to fire in £26.5 billion into the NHS, with money saved from leaving. I presume that would help?

dupainduvin · 19/06/2018 15:11

absolute I'm going to have to post some of these cat gifs if we have to go through another election or referendum soon :)

TSSDNCOP · 19/06/2018 15:13

Nobody votes to hurt anyone.
I'm sure the vast majority of people would not vote to hurt people, but there are some - a small minority of - people who would with glee. I've had the misfortune of meeting some of those sad

But those are people that would likely hurt people anyway; they don’t really need to waste energy with voting first.

Got anymore Absolute?

@teamclean I'm not stupid. As someone who has worked in the industry I know that these papers will continue to be published until newspapers die.

I support the campaigns against advertising & these newspapers only care about their bottom line so they will only shift position when they lose subscribers

The daily mail etc are able to flout tax laws, press regulation and any kind of scrutiny so they're not worth defending. They haven't changed since 'hooray for the blackshirts' so I will always speak out about them while recognising that they still have a readership and the idea of them being banned is plain silly

Hope I'm not overdoing it. Addicted to memes.

Tallyhooo · 19/06/2018 15:23

Does anyone actually read newspapers as gospel!!?? I get the Daily Mail on a Sat (I like the weekend mag!) and always have a breeze through it - I also read other papers.....journalists all have their own agenda/way of telling a 'story'...I'd like to think as a whole people could see past that kind of bullshit and make their own informed decisions!!?

AbsolutelyBeginning · 19/06/2018 15:24

@AsleepAllDay

I hope I didn't imply you were stupid! I certainly didn't mean that.

Also apologise that my cat meme unfortunately came directly under your post. That was purely coincidental, I assure you*

*Crikey. Just realised this sounds like a DM-style retraction Grin

tripYouOut · 19/06/2018 15:26

I think you're confused about what right wing means. Don't worry. Many are.

Ohmydayslove · 19/06/2018 15:48

Agree op but then you usually find rabid left and right wingers are equally racist mysogynistic and pretty thick.

Most extremes are.

Momentum and the EDL. Very similar types. Bullies and extremists.

I would ignore them but call out any racist. Anyone who thinks trump is what anyone needs has been lobotomised.

dupainduvin · 19/06/2018 15:48

he's more attractive as a cat!

catinboots9 · 19/06/2018 15:48

I love that old bag is offensive but defending racists is fine. I'm quite fine with disagreeing with that!

Who on the thread has defended racists?? Confused

AbsolutelyBeginning · 19/06/2018 15:50

Grumpy cat wears the wig better. There will be hell toupee, haha!

Gottagetmoving · 19/06/2018 15:52

My parents were right wing. I have 3 siblings and two of them are right wing.
I was brainwashed right wing until I began to look at politics properly in my thirties and realised I disagreed with everything they stood for.
We try not to discuss politics but if we do we argue.
I think they are all mad Grin
