It gets me down. I don't feel like I can discuss with my parents, in laws etc because I get too emotional, and they get defensive, but when I hear them say things like "Trump is what we need", and some frankly racist comments, I feel so helpless. They're not going to change. But I want to challenge them. It's no excuse that they're from another generation, there ARE older people who are not racist!

I wish I could stop them reading the Daily Fail (have wondered about gifting a subscription to a different paper) and broaden their minds somehow.

I am still so bitter that my parents, my in laws and people I work closely with all voted for Brexit. How do I stop hating them all?!

Sorry, bit of a rant. Wish I could let it wash over me, but honestly I don't want to be around these people sometimes and would consider limiting my daughter's time with them.

Cats would never elect somebody. Everyone would get one vote because they'd all vote for themselves as cats are self centred jerks. ( mine definitely is anyway Grin).

I can completely relate i had massive argument with my dad on fathers day as he has been trump supporter (didnt vote as english) and i was really emotional about families being separated at boarder of mexico and Texas. he will regularly spout conspiracy theories and bang on about Hilary being the devil , its painful to listen toi as hes so brainwashed. My family also voted leave i personally think for racist reasons but wouldnt admit that. (Who admits to being racist i guess) ive lost respect for them. 😕

TSSDNCOP - I agree with you on forming an opinion if your exposed to all sides - I did from a really early age - always disagreed with my Parents/Grandparents views, Political and otherwise - but made me question opinions and was a useful learning tool/rule for life...

AbsolutelyBeginning · 19/06/2018 13:12

I also think they can secretly read and roller skate and play table tennis. They just don’t want to

Yes, I can believe this!

TSSDNCOP · 19/06/2018 13:13

pebble I think they would have a live and let live policy as it relates to cats. The courtesy is clearly not extended to flies, spiders, small mammals, dogs and Greg Wallace.

cats are clearly Hobbesian - they'd revert to a state of nature as they're all lonely hunters.

I read the DM from time to time because it's like a woman's magazine for the self loathing woman, and if I want cheap diet tips or bitchy articles criticizing someone's life choices, it's all there. I have a very good degree...

this Op is clearly about 13 and out for a bunfight.

I had a very vivid dream a while back where I was at a debate as to whether we should still allow cats to vote. Was very odd.

How about grow up, respect other people’s political views and get on with your life!

I’m right wing/conservative. I hate Donald trump and I’m not racist! Being right wing doesn’t equal racism.

IMO we vote for our own personal prviate reasons.

AbsolutelyBeginning · 19/06/2018 13:18

@craxmum

Wow! That must have been so frustrating. Just shows you that narrow-mindedness can be found at both ends of the spectrum.

TSSDNCOP · 19/06/2018 13:20

Where do you stand on cats Jelly?

OP do your Dinlaws have a cat? You should get them one. That’ll sort them right out.

@AbsolutelyBeginning Hi any chance you could stop loading so many pics my signal is not very strong, I'm on a train, so it's taking forever to load messages.

Racecardriver · 19/06/2018 13:24

The real question is would cats vote for brexit or remain if we petty humans had given them the vote?

AbsolutelyBeginning · 19/06/2018 13:25

@Sparklyshoes16

Wow, sorry Blush

Had no idea it had that effect.

Will do...

JellyBears · 19/06/2018 13:25

@TSSDNCOP love cats haha they should run the country!!

I think they'd bring the fishing quotas into the equation.

hairycoo · 19/06/2018 13:26

I get ya sort of op. Some dm readers are thick. Specifically the ones who read it and take it as gospel. There is racism on both sides. I cant tell you the racist shit i got from a large section of very left wing english labour supporters towards me when i told them i was an snp supporter. (I got an equal amount of racism directed towards me from right wing supporters too though but i was perhaps more surprised at the left wing racism although i suspect some of that anger stms from the fact that a lot of snp supporters are ex labour supporters and that Scottish labour are now a non entity due to this). You cant reason with stupidity, racism or people who are inhumane, you just cant because they dont see themselves as any such thing. I have a dla dependent dm who thinks the sun shines out the Torys arses, despite having to fight for her pip when transferred from dla but try telling her that this is due to Tory cuts. Accordingly to her its because of immigrants/junkies etc etc.

dupainduvin · 19/06/2018 13:27

well I love the cat gifs, they have given me a good laugh on what is clearly a wind up thread

lostforinspiration · 19/06/2018 13:27

I get what you mean completely OP. I have been thinking about this a lot recently, just on the grounds that (because I am arrogant, ignorant, unempathetic etc no doubt) I just can't understand how there can be such a fundamental divide in how people think, other than they are being overly influenced by the side of the press I disagree with.

If you really believe in democracy, you're going to have to get over it. Hating someone for exercising their right to vote as they see fit is ridiculous. - it may be ridiculous, but the problem is in RL I very often do. I do wish I didn't, but at the moment, political tension seems to be so high, and the stakes so great, that I can't help it. And then just end up making snide remarks, which I completely appreciate is not helpful.

Hidillyho · 19/06/2018 13:30

@NewGrandad

Not sure if the thread has moved on from when you commented but the people I know that voted leave because of the NHS was to do with the campaign of ‘50 billion is being given to the EU weekly, let’s give it to the NHS instead’ - I don’t know if this was the actual words/amount but it was something along those lines
