All they seem to represent us keeping the rich, rich and the poor, poor. There doesn't seem to be that many rich people so why do they get so many votes?

It's McDonnell, not Macdonald

And better to piss money than to hold it in until teachers are forced to buy school supplies and food for their students, benefits are repeatedly cut for the most needy and elderly, food banks are increasingly popular and thus stretched, amputees and cancer patients are told they're fit for work... better to have a heart than none at all

The idea that the Tories are the grownups and the UK Population and labour are the children is just tosh by now

Pepper123123 · 19/06/2018 09:33

Depends on who people care about in my opinion.

I absolutely despise the Tories and wouldn't give them the steam off my piss, never mind a vote.

As much as I love Corbyn as a person with morals etc, he isn't strong enough to be a PM, so there are a lot of labour votes lost because of that. It makes me sad to admit that.

All I know for sure is that as someone who has been physically disabled from birth (SB, wheelchair user) I feel so, so vulnerable under the Tories.
The thought of Universal Credit reaching my area makes me feel physically sick.
I've no idea how I'll survive on zero income for six weeks.

This policy is intentionally cruel. Something that Tories seem to be okay with repeating over and over.

Pepper123123 · 19/06/2018 09:39

Also doesn't help that Tory Voters (a lot of them anyway) genuinely believe that people on benefits are in their masses doing it fraudulently, while real genuine facts disprove it.

Of course they're not going to believe that the fraud rate is tiny if they have their heads in the Daily Mail all day.

auntiebasil · 19/06/2018 09:40

They vote Tory because they are free to do so. I hate the Tories with a passion. I'm very old and remember Thatcher.
Corbyn indulges anti-semites and his acolytes are dangerous/useless wankers. I cannot vote Labour with him in charge.
I don't get what I want in politics. I voted Remain. We have a bunch of bastards vs another bunch of bastards right now.
Centrism will return.

Davespecifico · 19/06/2018 09:42

I think the Torres easily maintain their dominance because not only do they have their core of ideological Tories, they also have the Daily Mail Readers, the Sun readers, the people who don’t really know much about it all but like their local MP and so on.
Labour has its core of ideological socialists but doesn’t tend to attract anyone else. The Corbyn influence has pushed up the number of Peru members but won’t translate into a labour win.
It is way easier for the right to attract the middle ground than it is for the left.

BlooperReel · 19/06/2018 09:49

I disn't voye Tory, but I get why.

Lib dems are finished really, they come across as bonkers, and this latest balls up with one of them bleating on about mis-gendering Ian Huntley, right up there with the countries most repulsive figures, is yet another nail in their coffin.

Labour under JC have allowed Momentum to run riot, the ant-semitism row, coupled with their bullshit stance on self ID and AWS, make them look sinister. They are also widely viewed as spend thrifts, warranted or not.

The Greens and their 'non-men' stance puts people off too.

So who do people vote for? It seems they have opted for what they feel is the best of a bad bunch.

Ohmydayslove · 19/06/2018 09:51

its McDonnell not Mc Donald Grin right that’s important isn’t it. He would still be a terrible chancellor.

they have their heads In the daily mail all day Grin oh dear

I remember thatcher too and she was just as terrible as Corbyn would be for this country.

Far right and far left governments are truly dreadful.

Get rid of Corbyn and get a centrist sensible electable leader or you condemn posters like pepper to the tories for the next 10 years.

LillianGish · 19/06/2018 09:55

Jeremy Corbyn is the reason the Tories are currently in power (just). I think if Labour had picked just about anyone else as a leader they would have wiped the floor with TM in last election.

Ohmydayslove · 19/06/2018 09:55

In fact I would say anyone who votes for Corbyn knowing he’s unelectable care not one jot about the poor or the disabled.

auntiebasil · 19/06/2018 10:03

If Labour had picked Bandwagon Burnham for leader we would have a Labour government now. I don't like Burnham but I would hold my nose and vote Labour with him as leader.
I wanted Yvette Cooper - she would have been a brilliant PM.
Oh well .

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/06/2018 10:11

My constituency is always a close call between Tories/LD. And since I don't have faith in either of them it's always difficult, but I still vote on principle. I was once so fed up with the lot of them, I voted for the Monster Raving Loonies.

Labour come nowhere here, and I'd never vote for them anyway ATM, not with Corbyn and his Jurassic-Labour cronies. Corbyn reminds me all too vividly of the people who used to stand outside our student union at lunchtime, selling the Socialist Worker and dishing out Marxist Society leaflets. I don't think he's ever really grown out of the student-politics stage - a lot of right-on hot air, but real economically sound answers?

I doubt he really ever wants to be PM - he'd have to put his money where his mouth is, which is infinitely harder than being in opposition.

I am old enough to remember when 'soak the rich!' very high taxation of the better paid simply resulted in a massive brain-drain overseas.

The80sweregreat · 19/06/2018 10:17

Anyone but JC would do for me - he needs to go back to the back benches with his loyal followers and the party needs to get its act together. not holding my breath. I hate what the Tories stand for, but they seem to appeal to the masses and i cant see them going anywhere for a long time to come now we're all 'middle class' which is a joke, but people actually believe it.

princesstiasmum · 19/06/2018 10:20

Never voted Tory and never will, but dont like labours leader so who do i vote for next time, no idea, but the Torys are all for the better off , and what a mess they have made of the Universal credit fiasco, sod the poor.lets kill them off, thats tory for you

Ohmydayslove · 19/06/2018 10:21

Totally agree with you auntiebasil regarding Yvette she would be an excellent leader and PM and she has conducted herself so well and I think she’s conciliatory and extremely professional.

And I also think she would work with any tory for the good of the country.

If she was heading the Labour Party we would have a very good chance of winning the election.

Ohmydayslove · 19/06/2018 10:23

Yes I am old too and in my late teens I would have supported Corbyn.

However I grew up and it’s a shame he clearly hasn’t the idiot.

siwel123 · 19/06/2018 10:26

I agree if Jeremy and Abbott just pissed off and labour became a normal working people's party again jot an extreme left party with batshit policies I would vote them.
Until then though I will vote Tory as there's no chance of greens or lib dems coming into power

Enidblyton1 · 19/06/2018 10:27

But I don’t think it’s really about rich vs poor.

Many of my wealthiest friends are champagne socialists. They would never vote conservative.

I know many Tory voters who are middle aged and older, and would describe themselves as hard working, working class origin. They went to grammar schools in the 50s/60s and loved what Margaret Thatcher stood for. These people are somewhere in the middle - neither wealthy nor on the breadline. They vote Tory because of the idea that hard working people should be rewarded.

IslaBoots · 19/06/2018 10:29

*Why didn't you vote Tory OP?

Because I have a heart, don't want to be taking away benefits from the poorest in society while at the same time giving breaks to the rich!*

There are 65m people in the UK now and there will be 65m people in the UK should, God forbid, Corbyn become PM.

Where do you think the Labour government would find the cash that's not there now. The disabled and minors have always been financially supported by whichever govt is in power.

If Corbyn and Abbott find their magic money tree maybe we could all give up our jobs and spend more time with the family, and Corbyn would let us. Wouldn't that be lovely?

Oh wait.... the reality is Corbyn is not going to find his magic tree is he? so I guess people have to continue to work to fund the lifestyle of those who have no wish to - whether that's under Tory or labour.

The benefits system was set up to help those who couldn't work and that is absolutely right.

It wasn't set up to fund those who didn't want to work. Look how things have changed over the past 50 years...

When I was growing up every child had 2 parents, most families the dad worked whilst mum stayed home to raise the children. Most couples worked to save a nest egg and bought their own house before having starting a family. The benefits system helped by providing child allowance for each child and a financial allowance for anyone who became ill or unemployed. Able bodied men weren't unemployed for long if they had a family to feed.

Compare that to the amount that's being paid out in benefits now. We have become a nation of people wanting everything for doing nothing....

Tell us again... Where would the extra benefits money come from under Corbyn?

People say they are not in work as there are no jobs. Yet they are mostly labour supporters who have no problem with UK continuing with mass immigration.

At least the Tories are trying to limit immigration to allowing in people who have the skills we need, rather than another load of benefit seekers.

As it stands the benefit system is not appealing to those who claim benefits. I have no idea why people moan about being given a living wage for doing nothing tbh but they all seem to complain about the benefits system. But they claim they can't get a job because there are no jobs.

Imagine how much worse it will get under a Corbyn govt. Unless he finds his magic money tree of course...

THEsonofaBITCH · 19/06/2018 10:33

As Grandpappy used to say (paraphrasing Mark Twain I believe):
If you aren't an anarchist in your teens you have no passion;
If you aren't a member of Labour in your twenties you have no heart;
If you aren't a Tory by your thirties you have no brain.
Smile

GhostofFrankGrimes · 19/06/2018 10:35

Opened this thread and it’s almost like somebody vomited a tabloid editorial onto the screen. This country is in a mess due to prejudice and ignorance. Most people don’t give a toss about food banks or low pay if it doesn’t affect them.

Comforting lies or inconvenient truths?

baxterboi · 19/06/2018 10:35

I've always voted Tory, starting simply because that was the area I lived in and my parents did.

When i got a couple of years older I'd skim the policies and actually Tory policies fit with my views and opinions closer than any other party. Nowadays I think they are the best of a bad bunch.

I would never vote labour - nowadays because of the people running the party.

My parents now vote Lib Dem!

Samcro · 19/06/2018 10:37

i would never ever ever vote Tory.
After was Scameron did.....NEVER.
anyone has to be better than them. I have what they have done to disabled people.

Stephisaur · 19/06/2018 10:39

I vote conservative because our local MP is excellent, and does far better for my area than labour or Lib Dem.

muttmad · 19/06/2018 10:52

When you become an adult with adult responsibilities you realise that politics isn't always as easy as it was once when your ideals were spending someone else's money.
Take my set up, working partner, SAH mum two young children with a mortgage.
My partner earns just enough to not qualify for any financial top ups, this wage covers our mortgage, bills, food, car etc with very little left over for luxuries or unexpected bills (our car is 11 years old, we cant afford a holiday this year etc) under a labour government our tax burden will rise considerably and whilst id love to give everything a labour government would promise, NOT at the cost of potentially loosing our home.
Thats just one reason why on a personal level i vote conservative, i could go on listing policies and get personal with my thoughts on labours current leadership but the list would be endless.

Itchytights · 19/06/2018 10:54

I would rather pick my eyes out with a stick than ever, ever vote for Labour.

Never in a million years.
