All they seem to represent us keeping the rich, rich and the poor, poor. There doesn't seem to be that many rich people so why do they get so many votes?

Oh do bore off OP. Your post is infantile and smacks of a life lived in an echo chamber.

People who vote tory do so because, in general, they believe their policies are best for this country. Small state, personal responsibility etc.

As it happens this is one of the most left wing ever.

So there.

MrsSnitch · 19/06/2018 07:34

The voting population of this country has long tended to the Right- far more Conservative governments than Labour since the start of the 20th century. It’s a cultural thing in my view, a belief on the whole in “small” government and a wish not to pay masses of tax. A left wing government does not deliver that.

darceybussell · 19/06/2018 07:35

I work with large businesses every day. Most of them are terrified of what might happen to their business with a Corbyn government. They're worried that their businesses will fail under a regime with much higher taxes, increased regulation/interference etc. They're often employing thousands of people and are concerned that they won't be able to continue in the same way.

None of these people are thick and stupid, or racist, they're all very clever people and they're genuinely concerned about their businesses. I'm baffled that someone would assume Tory voters are all thick!

Gaspodethetalkingdog · 19/06/2018 07:46

It is the same over the Brexit vote according to leftists all the people were thick racists - in fact many well off business people voted leave, as did my brother - degree in chemistry. Plus most people don’t want to see the whole country turned into London which is what is happening..

TuTru · 19/06/2018 07:46

Brainwashed morons who believe tabloid stories

TuTru · 19/06/2018 07:50

What about all those NHS staff, teachers etc? Surely they didn’t all vote Tory?
Mind you, the choices that were given at the times, some people may have thought “better the devil you know”
There’s actually quite a lot of rich voters in this country anyway.
A lot of the poorest people won’t have been voting at all.

AsleepAllDay · 19/06/2018 07:51

There are 'shy' Tories, people who don't come out with it / aren't the upper upper class or corporate types you would expect. Fk knows why you'd vote for Theresa May to be in power but there we are

AsleepAllDay · 19/06/2018 07:53

Also, are you actually supporting the government that is cash strapped & brought austerity on as the trustworthy ones on the economy? LMAO

NewYearNewMe18 · 19/06/2018 08:00

I see the goady OP hasn't been back - job done.

Eve · 19/06/2018 08:07

Because my local mp is a 40 year old who has lived in the area all her life and also served as a councillor. They have also done a proper job previously and have a family

Labour candidate was a non local 23 year old politics graduate from a 3rd rate uni!! What the heck will he know about anything?

Also i’m Firmly in the squeezed middle - labour talk about tacking the rich and the non dons, but they won’t as they it’s the middle they go for, the easy targets.

JellyBears · 19/06/2018 08:13

Because if the alternative is a racist Natzi supporter I’ll stick with the torys. This country is in a mess because the Labour Party put them there, letting fair to many people come and live here, crippling the free services like the NHS. The benefits system is a joke people allowed to not work and do nothing and earn hundreds of pounds tax payers money etc.

Labour have lovely dreams of free buses and everyone from every country livin here but as a country we can’t afford it!

Justanotherlurker · 19/06/2018 08:17

Brainwashed morons who believe tabloid stories

And yet during the last election it was labour voters who were less politically knowledgable, which neatly coincides with your comment.

I know it was done by the evil right wing BBC so you can discard it has more weight to it than your statement:

nuttyslackster · 19/06/2018 08:28

People vote Tory because they can't stomach the opposition. I would like vote labour at the next election but I just can't with Corbyn and McDonnell at the helm. As much as I am no fan of May, Johnson et al they seem the best of a bad bunch. Bit depressing really that politics has come to this.

Stripyhoglets1 · 19/06/2018 08:29

Because Tory tactics are nice and polite on the outside but enact policies that cause alot of misery, and Labour are vociferous on the outside about societies inequalities and the people that support them, which people see as being rude.
Why people think the Tories are good with the economy who knows and call me Dave has fucked the country permanently with Brexit but people will continue to vote for them in case someone who doesn't deserve it gets benefits (they still do and will even under tories).

AnneElliott · 19/06/2018 08:29

I've voted for all parties - it depends on their policies and the leader at the time.

Really don't understand the vitriol towards conservative voters - hasn't Brexit shown that it doesn't work calling people nasty racist thickos?

I'm a civil servant and have worked fir both Tory and Labour governments (plus the coalition). From my perspective, they are nut so different - they mainly have the same vision but different ways of getting there.

However I would worry about Diane Abbot being in charge of the Home Office and I don't think Corbyn has the ability to be a good PM.

givemesteel · 19/06/2018 08:46

If our constitution has laws which prevented the level of borrowing seen under the Blair / Brown government I would be more willing to consider other parties.

But there isn't and I don't think our country can risk that level of borrowing again. I know the tories still borrow alot but that is to continue labour polices that are now impossible to get rid of (remember when Osborne tried to reduce working tax credits...?)

I believe in -

  • small government and lower taxes
  • personal responsibility and benefits only for those who need it, ie that can't work or as a short term safety net
  • low borrowing / fiscal responsibility
  • privatisation over public run services

Conservatives are far from ideal, especially at the moment, but they're the least worst option in my mind.

CornishMaid1 · 19/06/2018 08:51

As a country we always swing from one to the other because there is no viable third option (and this is from someone who used to vote Lib Dem and still wishes Nick Clegg was in charge).

Labour are seen as the spending party. They will spend and borrow, but that does create for example public sector jobs, wage increases in the public sector etc. However, all that spending does not work and we run out of money (like when Labour last left power).

The country then realises they need to sort out finances and the economy so the Tories get voted back in. They enter into austerity, cut back waste (theoretically they want to cut waste, but the public sector often still has the waste and just cuts jobs which isn't the aim) but generally bolsters the economy (Brexit has obviously hampered that somewhat this time).

The country then gets fed up of austerity and wants some spending so we get Labour back in and so the cycle continues.

Whilst some see the Tories as for the rich, a lot of people vote that way because it feels with the Tories that they want to support people who want to work and make something of themselves. I am all for making sure there are benefits/support for the ill, disabled etc, but for those being too lazy to work then why should they get benefits (as opposed to help into employment).

Labour are then seen as supporting the poor, but also supporting those on benefits (not just families who need them, disabled etc but those who can't be bothered to work) and those who work hard do not like that their money is being used to support people who can't be bothered. After all, if you increase and allow benefits and a good benefit life for those who do not want to work, why would the rest of us want to work - we don't do it from choice but because we need to support our families.

If Labour brought in a more left-centre leader who was charismatic (for his faults, Tony Blair did come across as very genuine) then I think more would go to him. However, Corbyn's party is too far to the left to threaten the Tories if the Tories unite (we are too busy infighting for power rather than getting behind Theresa May who I think could do a good job if everyone wasn't trying to stab her in the back the whole time).

Xenia · 19/06/2018 09:00

We tend to stay around the middle ground in the UK. The Conservatives care for teh less well off better as they conserve money and ensure there is enough for all so not surprisingly the British people voted them in and have not chosen Labour since the 2008 election. Thankfully Labour seem to be doing even worse than usually recently so they may fail to get in next time too.

I consider myself slightly left of centre but there is no way on earth I’m voting for labour or the Lib Dems after their recent embrace of momentum, rampant misogyny and antisemitism. Their hatred of women is the final nail in the coffin. No. Bloody. Way.

So there’s not much choice. If the Tories oppose self ID I will, reluctantly, vote for them. I dont like austerity, but those policies are more easily reversed than the total removal of the sex based protections in the equality act, so they will get my vote.

traciebanbanjo · 19/06/2018 09:07

Why didn't you vote Tory OP?

Because I have a heart, don't want to be taking away benefits from the poorest in society while at the same time giving breaks to the rich!

OP posts:
Bowlofbabelfish · 19/06/2018 09:09

I dont want to be taking away benefits either.

But I do want the equality act 2010 to retain sex as a protected characteristic. And I don’t want self ID.

My vote this time is single issue. I cannot vote labour while they persue this anti- woman stance that also gravely threatens child safeguarding.

If there was a left wing alternative I’d vote for them.

Brunsdon1 · 19/06/2018 09:14

Because I think Labour has become a rhetoric based personality cult backing a leader who has no concept of the reality of running a country

And I still haven't forgiven the Lib dems for the stupendous lack of spine showed whilst in the coalition

I don't really have much alternative

Ohmydayslove · 19/06/2018 09:26

Becaise I have a heart and don’t want to be taking away benefits from the poorest in society

Neither do probably 98% of posters here but if you honestly think Corbyn Abbott and mc Donald could run this country efficiently sensibly and well you really need help. Or you are very young and I am in no way patronising you op but look st the facts.

Corbyn has never ever run any Union, department or even had a managerial job. How on Earth so you think he coukd run the country.

Mc Donald will just borrow and spend.

Thornbury didn’t know the French ambassadors name while Abbott was so inept during the last election campaign they had to pretend she was ill to shut her up.

I have no love for the tories but at the moment labour are not credible. Sadly

ThisisSparta · 19/06/2018 09:29

Voting the current Labour Party isn’t going to improve day to day life for the poor, they will piss money at projects and schemes and then leave whoever comes in after them to clear the mess up.

Also very concerning to see things like Labour Live 2018 which had momentum activitists running around shutting down dissent (see the removal of the ‘we need to discuss brexit’ banner) see how women are shut down when questioning why men who self Id as women are allowed on AWS, history and current affairs all tell us that any party that won’t tolerate discussion, or dissent would be extremely dangerous if given power.

Also CornishMaid1 I also wish Nick Clegg was still leader of the Lib Dem’s! (There doesn’t seem to many of us about!) I think they would be a really strong viable opposition at the moment if they still had Clegg.
