I just feel like starting a grumpy thread for other people who sometimes find modern life a bit off kilter

I don't want to go to weddings abroad that cost a bloody fortune, use up loads of annual leave, and are often for a couple that have been living together for ten years and have 3 kids, a mortgage and a dog.

I want to see young and healthy people giving up their seats on public transport for elderly, or even late middle age people. You're young, you've more energy, I did it when I was your age.

Any other grumpy old lady views posters would like to share.

DH overhead a teen boy say to his friend conpletely without irony that he wished there was a way to reply back and forward straight away as he was stressed out by the delay between hearing a voice message, replying and waiting for the response

Jesus wept.

BadTasteFlump · 18/06/2018 19:08

Ooh I have loads.

I hate how young women in the public eye seem to think they have to show the world their crotch, tits and just about everything inbetween just because they're famous (or want to be famous). Even celebs who are famous for a reason (singers, presenters etc) seem to get more attention for their bodies than their jobs. DD was watching Little Mix recently and I could actually see outside flaps Shock

I have wondered before if I'm just looking back at my youth and remembering more innocent times with rose tinted spectacles, but then I watched TOTP2 and realised I was right - even Madonna looked innocent - and definitely wasn't flashing her flaps on tv.

VioletCharlotte · 18/06/2018 19:12

Can I join in? I'm feeling particularly grumpy today.

If I have to pay £4 for a cup of coffee, I'd like it to be made properly, rather than frothed up warm milk.

I'd like to be able to sit and drink said coffee in peace without people talking at the tops of their voices.

And why do people have to swear in front of their children?

I want to be able to park my car without having to enter my Reg number into the car park machine.

When I travel by train, I'd prefer it if people didn't decide to eat McDonald's.

And why are shopping centres heated like tropical greenhouses?

Having said all that, I do like technology and wouldn't be without my smartphone.

user1485342611 · 18/06/2018 19:12

Dreary that's a bit of an ironic post.

I also hate the current celeb culture. People used to become famous because they were talented or exceptional in some way. Now the vast majority of them seem to gain celeb status simply because they were prepared to make an exhibition of themselves on reality TV, or sleep with a married footballer and run to the tabloids, or because their sibling or parent is well known.

Madonna used to wear lots of clothes in the 80s - even the blond ambition tour with the pointy boobs costume was sort of empowering rather than sexy wear ( someone said this on mumsnet the other day and I agreed)

Ginslinger · 18/06/2018 19:25

I just want to register that I'm a grumpy old lady although I try very hard not to be, I try to be helpful and kind and hold doors open and all that jazz and then I just get ignored and I feel slighted. I know it's my problem.

However, I do love the Kathy Bates thing in Fried Green Tomatoes and I shall try and find it now -

BadTasteFlump · 18/06/2018 19:26

Absolutely agree 80's (love your MN name btw).

With Madonna you always knew she was in charge and wouldn't be messed with. I can't help thinking Little Mix and the like are being dressed up like Porno Barbie by music execs for the £££ it will bring them, and the control they have over their career and image has gone backwards, not forwards.

The80sweregreat · 18/06/2018 19:27

It’s awful being ignored.

The80sweregreat · 18/06/2018 19:30

Badtaste - thank you. I know it wasn’t great for lots of people though. It was an odd decade.
Looking back I was never the woman men fell for so maybe I was always ignored but feel it more now ! I am more grumpy 😡 though I was always too nieve.

BadTasteFlump · 18/06/2018 19:38

I was a kid/ young teen in the 80's so most of the bad stuff at the time passed me by - I loved Madonna though - Desperately Seeking Susan was the first film I saw just with friends and no parents supervising Grin. It was a crap film really but the music was fab and I soooo wanted to be Madonna Grin

BadTasteFlump · 18/06/2018 19:41

But yes anyway, on the grumpy theme - I hate that the 'role models' girls look up to now are sitting on youtube talking drivel and telling them what makeup to spend their pocket money on - or gyrating their crotches on tv.

LemonysSnicket · 18/06/2018 19:45

@OhTheRoses there has been a gay and lesbian section of the library since I was a child in the 90s. It's so people can find those specific books, the heterosexual section is known as 'erotic fiction' ... hopefully you can find what you needed now x

Queenofthedrivensnow · 18/06/2018 19:46

Re tge seats on buses my kids are taught they need to offer seats to others. Since they are my kids I'm confident they have no hidden disabilities. Neither do I. I can only account for the 3 of us

Queenofthedrivensnow · 18/06/2018 19:46

But yes YouTube in its entirely makes me very grumpy.

HateIsNotGood · 18/06/2018 19:47

I loved the segue from my ranty-pants post straight to Lilacs wanting more eateries - apologies for the swearing but the Fool and her why should I stand up for a 60 yr old post ruffled my feathers and fur a bit -

The fool should realize that most 60 year olds have already done the teething baby/working night shifts and quite likely still working too. Doesn't this fool know that energy levels, the body, etc deteriorate with age and aches, pains and tiredness increase as a natural progression as we get older, whether we like it or not?

I'd still give up my seat for a 60 year old and I'm 55.

BadTasteFlump · 18/06/2018 19:54

And what's with all the fake Essex accents that young people seem to have adopted? I live a long way from Essex but you wouldn't think so walking through the town centre. And if it's not Essex it's that fake gangster rapper accent. Believe me I live a long way from any ghettos. And why does every sentence have to be punctuated with 'like' between every other word.

BadTasteFlump · 18/06/2018 19:56

And what the fuck is all this 'my bae' crap?

Ginslinger · 18/06/2018 19:58

thank you 80s -

LemonysSnicket · 18/06/2018 19:59

Also I'm 23 and will happily give my seat up to someone who is old, looks like they're struggling or even someone who just asks me. But I'm not going to give up my seat to a random 55year old who looks like she'd beat the shit out of me in a fight ... why should I?

LovelyBath77 · 18/06/2018 20:03

I resent loud brash Hen Parties everywhere, especially at the gym which is nice and quiet at the weekends, they come in and use the changing rooms. grr. have complained to the staff as they can't all be members but nothing gets done.

LemonysSnicket · 18/06/2018 20:15

Although I do agree my generation is over sensitive, myself included, were not very resilient - I blame the barrage of social media demanding that were failures since the age of 10. Will put more effort into giving less of a shit and embody my inner biddy.

Oh and I despise the outfits worn by pop stars now (leotards made of metal, why?)

Queenofthedrivensnow · 18/06/2018 20:35

Like like like
Literally like.....

MissMoneyPlant · 18/06/2018 21:19

Cat Why do people take their mobiles to bed and leave them switched on, then complain that they were out til 3am/ working a night shift and you woke them

Ooh yes! Surely the beauty of text messages it that you can send and read them whenever is convenient. Mind you... why is it that the old Nokia phones could be switched off and would switch themselves back on at alarm time but smartphones can't?!!

MrsJayy Right back to the grumpiness folk crossing the road next to the crossing the run like they are on ninja warrior are they to cool for the green man

Maybe they do this because for some reason the crossings are often just up the road from the place most people want to cross?

I think loudness in general pisses me off. Music so loud people are shouting to be heard, people yelling on their phones, for some reason wandering around outside the front of my house, and on TV where the incidental music is much louder than the dialogue!

I'm 32 Grin

catinasplashofsunshine · 19/06/2018 06:34

How charming you are Hate, with your name calling. The convention on MN is to address people by their screen name, bolded, rather than with a personal insult.
You have no way of knowing the multifacited background, level of tiredness etc. of an individual based solely on their age. Plenty of 60 year olds are very much for and well. 60 is not elderly. There is no reason a healthy 60 year old trump's someone younger and needs to be offered a 55 year old's seat. That's patronising and ageist.

longwayoff · 19/06/2018 07:03

Hmm. Shops, libraries, other services staffed solely by machines. Try walking into any of them with a small dog on a lead. a large number of people - yes real ones - will instantly materialise to demand you leave immediately with your dangerously insanitary pet. Never fails to bring them out of hiding.
