Arrived at holiday cottage and no towels!

So we have arrived at a holiday cottage, we have stayed at many in the past and there are no towels. Although bizarre I know this happens ocassionally so went back to check the listing and there's no mention of this.

We are miles from anything so suggestions on a post card for showering tomorrow morning - the curtains?! Just kidding of course.

What's the most random thing you've found missing? Before this it was hand soap which I found ridiculous given the price.

I've just opened up a barn next to our house as Airbnb £105 a night and feeling very gratified that our towels are super fluffy Calvin Klein.

On clearance from TK Maxx Smile

stayathomegardener · 16/06/2018 21:14

Any kitchen towel to blot yourselves dry?

savingin2018welltryingto · 16/06/2018 21:17

I appreciate some people saying I'm wrong not to have to taken towels, but we must have stayed in 30 self catering places and never have we not had towels so it's all very anecdotal.

Anyway, plan of action - drip dry and will go out and get some. Have read the welcome guidance and only number is the company, I've shot off an email but they're not open on Sundays.

It's possible it's a mistake but there are bath mats.

If there are bath mats, I’m sure they’ve forgotten the towels.

Random to provide a tea towel and a bath mat, but no towels.

savingin2018welltryingto · 16/06/2018 21:20

There's no kitchen roll! I hadn't noticed until that post. There was one loo roll too (half a one in two loos) but we did bring some.

To the person who asked about the logs, no we don't want to light the fire but this is the UK, we might be sub zero tomorrow!!

I'd pursue it with the owners/agent, I wouldn't say it's very "luxury" if you have to bring your own towels... if it was cheap cheerful and basic then I would expect to provide my own sheets and towels. I'd also mention it in a review on trip advisor or similar.

WipsGlitter · 16/06/2018 21:34

We've never had to bring towels. The lack of dishwasher tablets really annoys me. As do over complicated bin instructions!!

Frannibananni · 16/06/2018 21:39

I would assume there would be towels unless stated - something like guests will need to provide linen.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/06/2018 21:40

The SC places where we've stayed in the U.K. have always specified whether towels are provided or not.

As for the worst missing item, Dh and I once arrived at a supposedly four star flat in Lyme Regis where there were 2 loos - and no loo paper! And I was bursting! Luckily it was right in the town centre so Dh's errand of mercy to the Coop took only a few minutes.
Since then I've always taken some, in case.

Whyiseveryonesoangry · 16/06/2018 21:40

Happened to us one year too. We drove to the nearest town, dived into Debenhams 5 minutes before it closed and managed to buy some. I made sure I bought a full set to match my colour scheme at home. Since then, I always check and will never book a holiday cottage that doesn’t provide bed linen or towels.

Papergirl1968 · 16/06/2018 21:41

The holiday house we stayed in last summer hadn’t been cleaned. It was actually fairly clean luckily, and the agency sent someone with fresh bed linen and towels, but it was a pain having to wait in for them and then I helped change the beds.
I did express concern to the agency by email and didn’t hear a word back so having booked through them a few years running, we won’t be doing so again.

NorksAreMessy · 16/06/2018 21:46

No towels?
That is pretty basic.

I have just been on a weekend away to a hotel /lodge thingy were there were no TINY BOTTLES of shampoo and stuff...just a big squirty thing of shampoo/handwash/laundryliquid/dishwasher soap/carcleaner/ windowlene in a thing attached to the wall.

Even then...there were towels!

Atthebottomofthesea · 16/06/2018 21:52

It's possible it's a mistake but there are bath mats.

I am pretty sure the Hoseasons caravan had a bathmat but not towels.

Atthebottomofthesea · 16/06/2018 21:55

I, evidently, stay at cheap and cheerful and always had towels. I always take loo roll. There is generally only one or a half finished one plus a new one.

Cacofonix · 16/06/2018 22:00

I've never stayed in a cottage in this country that hasn't provided towels. It really should be specifically mentioned if they're not providing.

The 6 dishwasher tablet thing is annoying when you've paid £1500 for a week. I always take extra in case. Some places leave a few and others whole bags full.

Anyway it's poor form for no towels. Bummer OP.

SimonBridges · 16/06/2018 22:04

Where in the country are you? I bet there is an MNer near by who might lend you some.

PuppetOnAString · 16/06/2018 22:05

For £1400 I would expect towels.

Shoppingwithmother · 16/06/2018 22:07

I stay at loads of cottages in UK at around this price level. The only time there has not been towels was one that was significantly cheaper and it specifically said there wouldn’t be any. So YANBU.

My most irritating things are coffee related - no cafetière in an expensive cottage is a big problem for me and so try to remember to take one but usually forget. One cottage had no cafetière, but a Nespresso machine supplied with 2 pods of coffee, in a village 25miles away from the nearest shop selling any more pods - so useful!

TimeToDash · 16/06/2018 22:07

You should always check towels as they're often an added extra and therefore not supplied unless requested. A missing key was a good one with us once 🙄

BuffyandHen · 16/06/2018 22:13

In a luxury cottage you would expect towels, loo roll, kitchen roll and dishwasher tablets (along with other basic/luxury items to be provided). It is not exactly living up to the name if they are not

PrimalLass · 16/06/2018 22:15

Never had towels provided in holiday cottages. We go away every year in this country.

Never not had them provided.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 16/06/2018 22:18

See I would disagree I have never stayed in a holiday let without towels even if it was of a basic variety. The fact this let is described as luxury would to me suggest better quality towels rather than the cheap and cheerful kind often found in holiday cottages. I would never assume that towels would be a paid extra in even the cheapest of lets unless it specified that on the listing. There is no excuse not to have towels they are one of the most basic of provisions.

Armi · 16/06/2018 22:22

We always stay in ‘naice’ places and there are always towels. I’d be well pissed off - who wants to pay £1400 and still have to pack, transport and wash your own bloody towels afterwards?

If it helps, I bought beach towels for £3.50 each in Asda today. (Also a child’s pink straw hat, a Hatchimals basket and a plastic tube that makes a noise when you spin it around. I never usually shop there and got over-excited).

essietopcoat · 16/06/2018 22:22

We've had this in a cottage in Norfolk with towels and had to buy them. The owners were a very sweet elderly couple who lived next to the cottage and the place was cheap - so we didn't complain.

I think in the uk you get what you pay for. I've found villas (in Greek islands and mainland europe) to be appallingly tight with their set ups - ie you have to pay extra to get a welcome pack that is standard in the uk. I wouldn't go to a villa again.
