Arrived at holiday cottage and no towels!

So we have arrived at a holiday cottage, we have stayed at many in the past and there are no towels. Although bizarre I know this happens ocassionally so went back to check the listing and there's no mention of this.

We are miles from anything so suggestions on a post card for showering tomorrow morning - the curtains?! Just kidding of course.

What's the most random thing you've found missing? Before this it was hand soap which I found ridiculous given the price.

Currently in a villa in Florida:

  1. Agent didn’t give us the correct alarm code....t’was a fun late night welcome after a looong journey (from uk) with a 4 year old and two elderly parents then refused to answer their phone even though the office was still open.
  2. No instructions on how to use ANYTHING in the place.
  3. No handle on the pool net so you have to get in to scoop the bugs ( of which there are many) and try not to look at what’s sunk to the bottom). I have asked but we’re not allowed a pole for the net 🤨
  4. We have towels but one bath towel each and they’re slightly threadbare so had to buy more we could use by the pool

Very first world problems I know 😁

Other places I’ve stayed have not had a bottle opener/corkscrew so I have one that lives in my suitcase now.... not risking that ever again!! I’ve arrived and found no loo roll, not even a few sheets to see you through to the morning.

jellycat · 16/06/2018 19:44

IME they say in the listing if they do provide linen and towels and if it doesn’t mention anything that means they don’t provide them. Although recently we’ve found most places provide them even if they don’t say they do. How annoying for you though OP; a luxury cottage should definitely have towels. We usually take microfibre towels to use as beach/swimming towels because they are so compact and then we have extras in case there aren’t enough in the cottage. No use for you at the moment but perhaps a good investment for the future.

AgentProvocateur · 16/06/2018 19:45

It’s so mean and petty not to leave towels and dishwasher tablets. That would really put me off a place. There’s no excuse for poor hospitality.

Fantasticday09 · 16/06/2018 19:45

Tbh I wouldn't expect towels self catering.
We had similar in a 4 star hotel recently. Started off with a towel each. Each day we used one they took it away and didn't replenish. Has to ask for them.

couchparsnip · 16/06/2018 19:48

I have stayed in many cottages and the convention seems to be that towels are provided unless stated otherwise. I woukd complain to the letting agent or caretaker.

LapdanceShoeshine · 16/06/2018 19:48

We also ‘built’ soap constructions like the Acropolis and the Colosseum. We stayed there for THREE MONTHS. By the end of it, I’m not sure who was having the biggest laugh, us or them

Or us, now, Judas Grin

Thanks for that!.

underneaththeash · 16/06/2018 19:49

That happened to us in France. Apparently it's not usual to supply towels or bed linen, but I'd booked direct and had no idea.

It cost us a fortunate to hire them...it also took a while for me to ask over the phone in French as my French isn't great. My French was much better though after our two weeks away.

couchparsnip · 16/06/2018 19:53

When DD was a baby we stayed in a cottage in France and booked a cot with the letting agent. When we got there the catetaker knew nothing about it and didn't want to help. It was Saturday evening before a bank holiday, in a place where Sunday opening is for small grocery stores onky. So 11 month old DD shared with us until Tues when we coukd get to Carrefour.

LapdanceShoeshine · 16/06/2018 19:54

Oh, France is different - French owners rarely provide linen as part of the deal & sometimes not even if you pay extra.

I used to work for a cottage booking company; phone conversations would get very fraught when people were flying, & the owners didn't provide linen under any circs Hmm

(& even when they did it was up to visitors to make up the beds when they got there...)

RomeoBunny · 16/06/2018 19:55

Erm contact the host surely?

CluedoAddict · 16/06/2018 19:56

Never had towels provided in holiday cottages. We go away every year in this country.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 16/06/2018 19:56

We’ve just returned from a five star apartment that had just about everything you get wish for, including Le Creuset cookware and a coffee maker. Everything was provided, including masses of cleaning equipment, which we took only minimal advantage of Grin

There were lots of tea towels, but other towels were not such good quality, which I found weird since everything else was so well equipped. Usually it says whether towels and linen are provided, but It’s easily missed when you’re booking. I usually take extra towels anyway, because it can be difficult to dry them after showering and there’s nothing worse than using a damp towel.

brizzledrizzle · 16/06/2018 19:57

Drip dry, it's not a disaster. You can go for a few days without hair washing until you go for a swim.

savingin2018welltryingto · 16/06/2018 19:59

Called the company but no answer as it's a Saturday evening.

I do get that some don't provide them but for £1400... You'd think they could.

Never fear though, there's a bloody spiralizer.

HyacinthsBucket70 · 16/06/2018 20:03

That's appalling OP. I've never booked a cottage and not had towels!

Can you email the company as well in case they are monitored?

lilcolibri · 16/06/2018 20:03

Last year we went back to the (8 bedroom, not small) villa we always family holiday in - this time, we chose not to get the 'welcome package' of £30 since we would arrive early and could do a shop.

But they removed EVERY. SINGLE. LOO ROLL! from every bathroom! there wasn't a single loo roll anywhere in the house.

Utterly bizarre, thanks for the thread I forgot to review it but I will now!

GreenProvence · 16/06/2018 20:03

Tea towels

ApolloandDaphne · 16/06/2018 20:04

Intent out a holiday house and I provide each guest with a bath sheet, large towel and facecloth. I like to leave what I would like to find in a house when on holiday.

Lovelydovey · 16/06/2018 20:07

Ocado delivery for tomorrow?

LapdanceShoeshine · 16/06/2018 20:10

there wasn't a single loo roll anywhere in the house

I hope you used the towels instead, lilcolibri Wink

Flooffloof · 16/06/2018 20:10

I have been loads of cottages now and they have all provided towels. Some luxurious some threadbare. I do take dog towels as I don't expect them to be provided, so in a pinch could use I suppose. Not ideal though.
And I don't pay more than £500 for a week rental.
Always take a tin opener though, got fed up of useless openers. Just give me a cheap butterfly can opener please. None of your fancy ones that I can't get to work properly Smile

KERALA1 · 16/06/2018 20:11

This is why we house swap with other families- properly equipped family houses with lots of towels, washing machine etc. Stayed in an owners direct one paltry small towel each Hmm

notacooldad · 16/06/2018 20:12

The only time I would expect to take towels is to a hostel.
I certainly wouldn't expect to take to a luxury cottage at all.

DarklyDreamingDexter · 16/06/2018 20:12

Have you checked the original booking blurb to see if towels/linen were excluded? I've been to cottages where you can take your own, or pay a small extra hire fee to have then provided. If it doesn't mention they are excluded from the hire, I would expect them, in which case it may be a oversight to take up with owner or agent.

FindoGask · 16/06/2018 20:12

£1400?! I do hope you're staying for at least two weeks?
