Arrived at holiday cottage and no towels!

savingin2018welltryingto · 16/06/2018 19:04

So we have arrived at a holiday cottage, we have stayed at many in the past and there are no towels. Although bizarre I know this happens ocassionally so went back to check the listing and there's no mention of this.

We are miles from anything so suggestions on a post card for showering tomorrow morning - the curtains?! Just kidding of course.

What's the most random thing you've found missing? Before this it was hand soap which I found ridiculous given the price.

OP posts:

I stay at a luxury cottage and hand soap isn’t included which annoys me.

keyboardkate · 16/06/2018 19:30

I'd use a pillowcase and hairdryer!

But it is not right that it didn't state specifically that you MUST BRING YOUR OWN TOWELS!

Any way of contacting the owners?

AndromedaPerseus · 16/06/2018 19:30

We had this last year and it’s really annoying I suspect the owners don’t want to do the extra laundry but they need to be extra explicit if towels are not provided.

Saucery · 16/06/2018 19:31

I always check now since a company we used for 10 years (lots of lovely, fluffy towels for everyone) suddenly changed their policy and we had to share the dog’s towel (clean!) on the first day.
I agree that top end cottages let themselves down by not providing them.

CircleofWillis · 16/06/2018 19:32

Op has said that they have stayed there many times before so presumably expected the towel situation to be the same.

Caribou58 · 16/06/2018 19:32

Holiday cottage rentals almost always provide towels and if they don't - they TELL you.

WindyWednesday · 16/06/2018 19:33

I’d worry what else they have cut corners on.

chocolateworshipper · 16/06/2018 19:34

Have you got Amazon Prime?

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 16/06/2018 19:35

I have rented many holiday let’s,never taken my own towels.ever

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 16/06/2018 19:35

On further investigation there are no dishwasher tablets (we did bring our own), one tea towel and a total of 3 logs with no kindling.

This is a 'luxury' cottage and it seems silly to not include these things which cost little but make a big different to customer experience.

I would give the people who own the cottage ring. Hopefully it is an oversight.
If they aren’t going to provide the basics then they should make it explicitly clear before booking so you can work out what you need to bring or indeed if it is worth the hassle. It is unfair that you should lose a few hours out of your holiday going out to buy towels that you don’t want to spend your cash on.

stayed in many cottages, not this one many times.

IME if they don't say bring your own, then they're provided. (Occasionally they'll say bring your own beach towels)

Jammycustard · 16/06/2018 19:36

I’ve stayed in many rentals. Never once has there not been towels.

Buxtonstill · 16/06/2018 19:36

If you need kindling or a firelighter, crisps are very good; Pringles are best. The oil on them gets the fire going. Also works with barbecues

ReservoirDogs · 16/06/2018 19:37

Well next guests will know after you leave a review!

QueenArseClangers · 16/06/2018 19:37

Do they have a linen cupboard with bedding in? I’d use spare bedsheets/duvet covers.
Definitely contact the owners though.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 16/06/2018 19:38

In the premium lets we have stayed in
Towels
Dishwasher tabs
Laundry tabs
Bin liners
Washing up liquid
Kindling & logs were provided

NotARegularPenguin · 16/06/2018 19:38

Sign up for amazon prime free trial. You’ll have towels delivered on Monday?

WindyWednesday · 16/06/2018 19:40

Towels need washing and drying before using really otherwise they aren’t absorbing.

I think the owners have forgotten and will be able to help. I’m sure the op doesn’t need the expense of buying new towels.

CoffeeIsNotEnough · 16/06/2018 19:40

That's crap! We nearly always stay in holiday cottages, and mostly in Britain. I've only once had a place with no towels. It was a real shock! We had taken a couple of beach towels but we had to drive an hour to the nearest Argos to pick up two bales of shitty towels to keep us eight of us going for two weeks. It was a really nice cottage in Northumberland, only recently totally renovated.

I've checked ever since. It's totally fine and normal for a place to say 'do not take our towels to the beach and we will charge you if they are sandy' but not providing towels in a decent cottage is really cheapskate.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 16/06/2018 19:41

Wow,what a clever suggestion. Pringles to get a fire going. Who knew?

WindyWednesday · 16/06/2018 19:41

YANBU.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 16/06/2018 19:42

It wasn’t something missing, it was something I got that I didn’t want!
I used to,live and work in the Philippines and the first time I went there, with a colleague, we stayed in an apart-hotel. So a two bed two bath apartment but with daily housekeeping. The bathrooms were topped up with fresh towels and toilet rolls every day. They were also topped up with two, very small, bars of soap every day. Neither I, or my colleague used/wanted/needed soap, we had our own toiletries which included shower gel. Despite the fact that not one of the four per day (two baths x two bars per day) had been opened or used, they kept appearing in the, very small, shelf above the sink. At the end of the first week, my colleague decided to inform housekeeping that we really didn’t need the soap, and there was no need for them to keep delivering it. There must have been a lost in translation issue because they kept coming. This was just the first of many attempts by us to stem the flow of soap but nothing seemed to get through. After LiveCollage no and working in many Asian countries over the years I realise that procedure and rules are very important to the people there. Basically then housekeeping rule was, replace towels and top up toilet roll and soap....daily. And clearly nothing was going to deter housekeeping from adhering to this rule. We tried our best but it was all to no avail so we started finding alternative uses for the tidal wave of very small soap bars that engulfed us during our tenure. This included a very large ‘soap domino’ rally on the large but unused dining room table. We also ‘built’ soap constructions like the Acropolis and the Colosseum. We stayed there for THREE MONTHS. By the end of it, I’m not sure who was having the biggest laugh, us or them.

Picklesandpies · 16/06/2018 19:43

Can you amazon prime some or order from Next? They usually come next day x

CoffeeIsNotEnough · 16/06/2018 19:43

I get fed up with the dishwasher tablets thing as well. We generally stay in fairly upmarket cottages. They count out the tablets so you have one for each day. I don't want to do extra washing up on holiday! Can't they at least give you ten for seven days? Do people really nick three dishwasher tablets?

Badbadbunny · 16/06/2018 19:44

Unless specifically stated as included in the listing/adv, we take our own towels, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, kitchen foil, loo rolls, and of course all toiletries. (We even take our own teapot and washing up bowl!). There is no "standard" whether cheap & cheerful or luxury. Our motto is that if we need something and it's not specified as included, we take our own.
