AIBU at this dietary request in RSVP?

Hello everyone,

I sent a standard birthday invitation to my son's class (reception). RSVP by [today], state dietary needs etc. I am planning a great party (magician, animators etc), but for the first time am doing it so formally. DS is a popular child, after struggling with extreme shyness, and a lot of kids want to come.
I received today a reply from one mum stating "[Childs name] can have only organic products. Please no refined sugar either. Please check with me if in doubt".
I was already surprised by other requests - namely, halal, gluten free (x2), soy free and vegetarian (x2, one helpfully points out that eggs are not vegetarian). Happy to accommodate (but definitely will outsource to a professional caterer now).

AIBU to think that's a bit too much? Or is it normal? Of course, I can afford organic ingredients, it's not a money issue, but isn't it a little bit cheeky to ask for it?

TotallyChorkie Ffs it is quite hard to arrange foods for a children's party that are completely vegan e.g cake not made with egg, etc. I am not ignorant, I know what I am talking about, you are being ignorant and ridiculous.

why is veganism a protected right? Is vegetarianism?

SalemBlackCat · 18/06/2018 19:11

It may be a protected right, but unless due to allergies, it is just a ridiculous mother after attention.

cherish123 · 18/06/2018 19:16

It is cheeky to ask for organic. I only eat organic meat but would not expect it to be provided at a party. She won't know if it's organic or not. She is very naive if she thinks her child will never go through life eating non-organic food. Heaven forbid if her DC ends up at a party at Macdonald's.

TheClitterati · 18/06/2018 19:16

The OP had me laughing loudly in the park. More of a cackle really.

And now the update and she's not taking her kid to the party 😂😂😂😂. Poor kid will be staying home all his life won't he. Bless.

TheClitterati · 18/06/2018 19:18

And she cc'ed everyone. Grin What a brilliant own goal that is.

StuffYouAllInTheCrust · 18/06/2018 19:21

Bloody cheek! Next time just ask about any allergies and say you’ll provide gluten free and veggie options.

TotallyChorkie · 18/06/2018 19:25

@SalemBlackCat the point is you actually have no idea why people choose veganism for themselves or their child and have no right whatsoever making the comments that you have about another person whether their choices are made for beliefs or health. Quite frankly I think bringing up a child who’s mother is intolerant of other people’s way of life and believes that violence is an acceptable form of communication is the one who is cruel!

Update - 2.

There is a MASSIVE email fight between two mums since about who is the better nutritionist. Did you know that peach fuzz causes long term bowel issues? Oh dear, of course I did, fyi find attached a brochure about the grave danger of consuming yellow foods in general, surprised you did not know this. Well, we don't eat brightly coloured fruit and toxic nightshade family veg at all, so how would I know!
I think I'll change the catering arrangements to McD now.

KatriKling · 18/06/2018 19:40

Organic! Brilliant! Grin A very 1st world request.

TotallyChorkie · 18/06/2018 19:42

@SalemBlackCat again you presume too much! I have omni children! No-one is forced in this house at all! One has a milk allergy which we cater for!

I just don’t think you should be commenting on individual choices in the derogatory manner that you intended!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/06/2018 19:43

Fabulous - sit back and enjoy the madness

SalemBlackCat · 18/06/2018 19:44

craxmum Holy effen hell! World has gone mad. Organic and vegan - first world problems by self-centred parents who don't seem to consider the child. Unfortunately the more inches you give them, the more miles they take. Change it to McDs. That will weed out the weirdos.

SalemBlackCat · 18/06/2018 19:47

TotallyChorkie then my posts were not aimed at you and I specifically highlighted FORCED so people would know I was talking about those type of parents. So if my post doesn't apply to you, what on earth is your problem? Several other posters have said similar to me about vegan, but you've gone for my jugular only.

auntiebasil · 18/06/2018 19:48

Gluten-free, dairy-free, halal, vegetarian. All these are reasonable. Organic? Gets a big No from me. Which, in my head is Fuck Right Off.

auntiebasil · 18/06/2018 19:51

And vegan. That's a reasonable request.

LockedOutOfMN · 18/06/2018 19:54

It's cheeky to ask for organic. She could let her child eat what's provided, or pick him up before the food, or bring him with his own snack.

I know faddy eating is a craze right now but I'm sure all of us who grew up in the 80s had that one friend whose parents would only feed them carrots while the rest of us were hoofing down the Nerds and Hubba Bubba...and that person without fail was the one who developed a Domino's / Viennetta / Wotsit addiction in their first term at university.

TotallyChorkie · 18/06/2018 19:59

. Veganism is because it is a way of living which involves not using animals or animal products for any personal uses and believes in the protection of all life so very much a belief system as opposed to a strict diet choice.

waves that would be me, DM has since said she regrets banning all sweets, crisps, cakes & chocolate from my childhood after watching me consume 4 bags of Haribo in one sitting, I have a compulsion to never leave any food and I’m sure it’s because food was so strictly controlled when I was growing up.

starfleet · 18/06/2018 20:05

Sorry. Haven't read the whole thread - we eat Halal but would have never dreamed of asking someone to cater for DS at a kids party. DS would quite happily eat a cheese sandwich and a few crisps - when he was older he knew to go for the vegetarian option as more often than not there was always one offered - I wouldn't have thought to ask another parent to cater for him specifically! If there were sweets with gelatine in them we would take them home and they came in handy for play dates or whatever.

TotallyChorkie · 18/06/2018 20:16

@SalemBlackCat I took exception to your post because you basically labelled veganism as a strict diet and called parents cruel. I am vegan and feed my children vegan all the time (not carrot sticks but they have just wolfed down a Betty Crocker chocolate cake that I made earlier). For me it is a way of life, not a “diet choice” and I have a belief that I very much believe in. I would never ever disrespect someone else’s life choices but unfortunately people think it is fair game to question mine. My children are omni but my friends are vegan and she is a wonderful mother who most certainly does not need a slap. I said your post was ignorant which it was as if you truly understood veganism, you wouldn’t generalise it alongside a reduced sugar diet.
