To be fucking furious that a Tory MP just prevented upskirting being made a criminal offence?

Tory MP Christopher Chope has just singlehandedly prevented the passing of the private members bill supported by the government that would have made upskirting a sexual offence, by shouting Object.

Can I urge you all to leave a message on his parliamentary office answerphone and email him to ask why he thinks men should be entitled to photograph women's genitalia?

Argh! I have rage against the entitled white middle class male building.

FurryDice · 16/06/2018 04:41

That’s male, building. Let’s leave architecture out of this.

tripYouOut · 16/06/2018 07:16

What does his sex, race or class have to do with anything? I think you have issues beyond 'rage' @FurryDice

SoddingUnicorns · 16/06/2018 07:37

What does his sex, race or class have to do with anything?

In this context is that actually a serious question?

cricketballs3 · 16/06/2018 07:37

He also blocked a bill to give a higher legal standing to police dogs and horses getting attacked an hour later

happinessischocolate · 16/06/2018 07:49

Unfortunately he’s my local MP. You could stick a blue rosette on a donkey round here and the majority of residents would vote for it.

Totally agree, and unfortunately the majority of voters in this area wouldn't have a clue what upskirting is, so it won't cause him to lose the next election either.

Butteredparsn1ps · 16/06/2018 07:55

Signed the petition.

Let’s see if we can get it to 10 k by the end of the weekend.

Floeer · 16/06/2018 08:01

It just said on the news he doesn't even know what upskirting is?! Wtf!?

kistanbul · 16/06/2018 08:05

Just re-adding the link to the petition to ban upskirting

Floeer · 16/06/2018 08:09

It is being taken back to the commons on the 6th July so I should imagine it will be passed then.

LimboLuna · 16/06/2018 08:11

I really hope finns lawgets through as well and doesn’t get lost in the fall out of this.

Metoodear · 16/06/2018 08:13

I think the general objection to this law is that it’s already covered by other laws so is unnecessary, rather than this MP thinking it is okay.
i think their is a group of MP labour ones to the normally vote against all private members bills and they feel it’s a clock and dagger way of making law however I do understand the TM backed this completely before we get our knickers in a twist about being thrown under the bus labour also put women at risk by sideing with men who want to enter women’s spaces

Magpiesarehuge · 16/06/2018 08:23

After reading some other views, i think he has a point iIf he habitually opposes new laws to ensure laws aren’t just slipped through without proper debate and scrutiny on the say so of the tiny number of mps who can be bothered to turn up as it’s a Friday afternoon.

cricketballs3 · 16/06/2018 08:26

Magpie a lot of commentators have said that even if its just a few MPs it still has full scrutiny in committee - it doesn't suddenly become law

Bourdic · 16/06/2018 09:03

It’s completely impossible to slip through a bill without proper debate and scrutiny. Impossible. After the 2nd reading , there is the committee stage for full scrutiny and then the 3rd reading, then the H of L. And in this case the bill had Government backing and there is the Scottish legislation to draw upon as well in terms of ensuring accurate drafting.

This is how it works

My parents live in an area where, in her words, 'you could put up a gorilla with a red rosette and people would vote for it'

Until the expenses scandal, they went Lib Dem - just for one parliament but if a single MP pisses enough people off they can be voted out.

Hollow

I have used your email and added that girls are also affected and that many women and girls have to wear skirts as part of school or work uniform.

kistanbul · 16/06/2018 10:52

It won't be debated on the 6th. It's difficult to explain, but the idea of it coming back for another go is a procedural fiction. Friday was the only chance this year, unless the government introduce it as a new Bill.

Bourdic · 16/06/2018 11:07

The government could also try and find an existing bill currently going through and piggyback a clause onto it - that’s happened before. It’s what Stella Creasy was trying to do last week with the NI rape issue - she was looking at the Domestic Violence Bill as a possible vehicle.

Bourdic · 16/06/2018 11:08

Sorry I meant NI abortion issue of course

Tanith · 16/06/2018 12:59

“After reading some other views, i think he has a point iIf he habitually opposes new laws to ensure laws aren’t just slipped through without proper debate and scrutiny on the say so of the tiny number of mps who can be bothered to turn up as it’s a Friday afternoon.”

First of all, he isn’t above using the Private Member system himself when it suits him and, secondly, he’s been an MP for a very long time, even served in the Government under John Major.
That’s plenty of time to work towards changing a procedure.

It’s sheer arrogance to sit there disrupting everyone else’s legitimate business simply because he doesn’t agree with the procedure (except when it’s working for him).

I get that a donkey with a blue rosette would be elected by his constituency but surely Christchurch can find a better calibre donkey than this?

KatyaZamolodchikova · 16/06/2018 15:42

I have just emailed my MP to ask for her presence at the next reading of this bill:

I’m writing to ask you to do all you can to support the Private Member's Bill on upskirting. I understand that there is little that can be done to prevent MP’s like Mr Chope from dissenting, however I implore you to attend the next reading of this bill in the House of Commons on 6 July.

I strongly believe that once all the excuses Mr Chope can make to excuse what has widely been perceived as misogyny have been removed, any objection made can only be based on a lack of respect for women & girls. This has already been interpreted as support for abuse & voyeurism against women and girls, and the presence of MPs in the House of Commons to support this bill will help us feel like we have a voice against this kind of sexist attitude.

I appreciate that Mr Chope may well have strength in his conviction that bills should be debated by a greater number of MPs before becoming law. By attending the next hearing you can help take that excuse away from him, and you can stand up and support me and hundreds of other women in your constituency who should be able to access justice based on our need, and not have this denied to us because of our sex.

Honestly, she is very slow at replying to emails last, so I can only hope she’ll read it in time. I’ll post any response I get from her.

Pollygetthevodkaout · 16/06/2018 18:21

Why dont we just ask his DD Antonia if she thinks her dad should get a present from her this year...maybe a nice photo??

SoddingUnicorns · 16/06/2018 18:27

Why dont we just ask his DD Antonia if she thinks her dad should get a present from her this year...maybe a nice photo??

His DD isn’t responsible for her father’s disgusting actions, and I think that suggesting she be brought into it is out of order.

Pollygetthevodkaout · 16/06/2018 18:51

I dont...these women are someones daughters
