To be fucking furious that a Tory MP just prevented upskirting being made a criminal offence?

Tory MP Christopher Chope has just singlehandedly prevented the passing of the private members bill supported by the government that would have made upskirting a sexual offence, by shouting Object.

Can I urge you all to leave a message on his parliamentary office answerphone and email him to ask why he thinks men should be entitled to photograph women's genitalia?

He obviously doesn't give a shit, I doubt his wife/sister/daughter/granddaughter has been upskirted and so it doesn't bother him or mean anything to him. Maybe he sees this a something funny. What an Arse.

MissusGeneHunt · 15/06/2018 15:37

Well what a nob he is. Complete freaking idiot.

However, I cannot agree that every Tory woman feels they should be chained to the kitchen sink, nor does every Tory man believe that either. I know other political party supporters who do lean in that direction however; it's called a representative cross section of society!

Tory or not, he's still a nob for his objection.

Floeer · 15/06/2018 15:38

So so so disgusting though that he has done this!

He is an idiot in general though and this isn't the first selfish act he has done in the commons! He appears to enjoy wasting everyone's time and causing scenes; e.g. he put in 40+ Private Member Bills to clog up the system last year and slow down parliamentary progress.

MissusGeneHunt · 15/06/2018 15:38

Nice one @RadicalFern!! Smile

tripYouOut · 15/06/2018 15:39

"Tory men prefer women to be at home and somewhat chained to the kitchen sink"

Or leading the country ...

SoddingUnicorns · 15/06/2018 15:39

Well yes. He is a Tory. This callous disregard for women is what being a Tory is all about. Tory men prefer women to be at home and somewhat chained to the kitchen sink so this kind of thing wouldnt happen to them. Tory women basically agree with this.

^Don't be so fucking stupid*

I’m sorry did swathes of Tories stand and condemn his disgusting actions? Roundly condemn him for his petty little act of rebellion which will have very real consequences for women harassed in this way? Is there a campaign to suspend him? To discipline him?

Oh, no. Guess they mustn’t disagree after all then eh?

siwel123 · 15/06/2018 15:39

Regardless of his objection it passed, so yes he is a knob but at least it got through and he is now being made to look like a prick

HollowTalk · 15/06/2018 15:39

I've just sent him this:

Dear Mr Chope

I have seen in the news today that you intervened to prevent the Voyeurism (Offences) Bill from getting its second reading in the Commons.

Could you please explain why you think it should be legal to take photos of women's genitalia without their knowledge or consent?

I am very disturbed by this. The use of mobile technology has meant many women have suffered from threats and abuse. I am shocked to find you have tried to block their objections to this.

You are old enough to understand, surely, that women are entitled to a private life. You are educated enough to know that just because a photo is taken, it doesn't mean the victim wanted it to be taken.

You have a daughter and a wife. Surely you would want someone to be punished if he took a photo of their genitals without their permission or consent?

I would welcome an answer to this email. I believe you are bringing your party into disrepute and would like to know your reasons.

HollowTalk · 15/06/2018 15:40

When you look at his Wiki page, it reads like "All the things you don't want in an MP."

honeysucklejasmine · 15/06/2018 15:41

siwel your screenshot says "expected to pass". And now it hasn't, because of him.

Utter cunt.

Leah I don't understand - the whole point of this campaign was that it isn't an offence under existing laws.

sleepingdragons · 15/06/2018 15:41

YANBU, fucking shameful.

honeysucklejasmine · 15/06/2018 15:42

Sorry, "suggests ... will pass", I misquoted.

gracielacey · 15/06/2018 15:42

Many Tories actually joined in wth the cries of shame, including the justice minister Victoria Atkins.

And the Tory government agreed to back the bill.

This isn't a Tory v Labour issue, it's a sane people v Chope issue.

I went with a more "Tut tut" approach Smile

May I ask why you chose to object to the proposed "Upskirting" Bill?

Why did you object to the idea of men who get sexual stimulation from invading womens personal space being punished for their actions?

Why?

And given the backlash you are no doubt already receiving, will you absent yourself from the relisting? I do hope so!

Badly done, sir. Very badly done.

siwel123 · 15/06/2018 15:43

I apologise the sources I read said the moj has passed it, but looking at the BBC he objected and did manage to block it.
What a knob.

hmcAsWas · 15/06/2018 15:43

Excellent email Hollow

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/06/2018 15:45

Leah That was my original thought too! Another law to muddy the waters when we already have laws that cover it.

But I did a bit more reading on it and "upskirting" seems to fall into a grey area... so maybe there is a need for a specific addition!

onalongsabbatical · 15/06/2018 15:47

I emailed him.
I'd rather drown him, but still. What a complete arsewipe.

BreakWindandFire · 15/06/2018 15:49

He - and Philip Davies - are well known for this. They sit in Parliament every Friday and object to every private Bill that is brought forward. It's all a bloody hilarious game to them.

midsomermurderess · 15/06/2018 15:50

He stated that he objected to the bill so it goes back to the bottom of the pile, hmc

hmcAsWas · 15/06/2018 15:50

Perhaps the Conservative party should consider removing the whip from him (they wont of course, with a slim majority)

PokemonWanker · 15/06/2018 15:50

I knew it would be Chope before I even opened the thread.

Unfortunately he’s my local MP. You could stick a blue rosette on a donkey round here and the majority of residents would vote for it.

flippyfloppyflower · 15/06/2018 15:52

LeahJack but it's not covered by other laws - that is why this was so important. The Police could not arrest and the culprit be prosecuted for "upskirting" under existing legislation. It was vital that this loop in the law be closed.

onalongsabbatical · 15/06/2018 15:53

Putney MP - could we rustle up 1000 or so women to go and stand outside his house in protest? I'm furious. Can't do it today I don't live in London, but I'd be happy to.
