To be worried about friend driving in flip flops?

Just that. Friend kindly offered to take my DC out for the afternoon with her DC. I just noticed last minute that she's wearing beach flip flops to drive in. They've gone off and I was left thinking I should've said something, because as far as I'm concerned flip flops are dangerous for driving in and she's got my kid in the car. They're not just popping round the corner either. But wtf could I have said without sounding like a nob?!

I live in Australia I drive in flip flops most of the year I’ve never thought about it!

OuchLegoHurts · 10/06/2018 12:23

I drive in flip flops all summer...I drive two hours daily on dangerous country roads. What's dangerous about wearing them?

AgentProvocateur · 10/06/2018 12:23

I always drive in flip flops in the summer.

ChaChaChaCh4nges · 10/06/2018 12:24

Why do you think flip flops are dangerous?

PorkyPortia · 10/06/2018 12:26

I wouldn’t drive in them tbh

MargotLovedTom1 · 10/06/2018 12:26

Because you can get the pedal stuck between your foot and the flip flop and the sole bends under and wedges under the pedal. Bit scary when it happens with the brake.

I wouldn't drive in flip flops personally.

SerenDippitty · 10/06/2018 12:28

Another one who wouldn’t drive in flip flops.

moita · 10/06/2018 12:29

I wouldn't personally as the ones I have aren't trippy enough. But then I wouldn't drive in heels, or boots without a good grip. I do think it comes down to personal choice

goldopals · 10/06/2018 12:29

I drive in thongs all the time; most Aussies do. I've never known anyone to have an issue while driving.

OuchLegoHurts · 10/06/2018 12:29

That's never happened to me, but if it did I'd pull it out from under the pedal. I think you're worrying about nothing to be honest. Some people won't drive in high heels, others will... There's very few car accidents due to footwear...

moita · 10/06/2018 12:29

*grippy

Drchinnery · 10/06/2018 12:29

My husband drives in flip flops and it makes me nervous! Think it affects braking too!

TimeToDash · 10/06/2018 12:30

I wouldn't drive in flip flops!

Sparklingbrook · 10/06/2018 12:32

but if it did I'd pull it out from under the pedal.

Bit tricky to concentrate fully on driving whilst doing that.

Iceweasel · 10/06/2018 12:33

She might have taken them off in the car? I don't drive in flip flops but I drive barefoot. The hardest thing I find to drive in is hiking boots, cant feel a thing. Don't own any heels.

snewname · 10/06/2018 12:33

I wouldn't drive in beach flip flops but I do drive in sandals that are similar but have a more substantial sole, that isn't so bendy.

Clarabel22 · 10/06/2018 12:34

No! Flip flops can be lethal. I used to drive in them until one day I had an accident as a result. My right foot slipped off the pedal as I was pulling out of a side road to turn right. As a result my speed suddenly dropped and I was fighting to lift my foot back up to either break or floor it to get out - the edge of the flip flop caught on the pedals and I just couldn’t get it unstuck. As a result, the car to my right thought I had changed my mind about pulling out and carried on as I very slowly drifted into the side of him as he passed, unable to do anything about it, scraping all down the side of his car. It could have been much much worse.
I have always heard people saying you shouldn’t drive in flip flops but until that moments I had no idea why they said it.

snewname · 10/06/2018 12:34

Barefoot is supposed to be dangerous because you can't get the same pressure in an emergency stop. Same reason for bendy flip flops.

beingsunny · 10/06/2018 12:35

I live in Australia, I wear things most of the year and just kick them off when I get in the car and drive barefoot

crazymumofthree · 10/06/2018 12:35

If I am wearing flip flops I take them off once in the car and drive barefoot so perhaps she is doing the same?

KioraAdora · 10/06/2018 12:35

Its a no from me. I change into proper shoes for driving.

OuchLegoHurts · 10/06/2018 12:35

Definitely not ideal Sparklingbrook but a) it would be an emergency and b) it's never happened, and I've never heard of it happening to anyone so I'm willing to take that rush after driving in them for years

OuchLegoHurts · 10/06/2018 12:35
  • risk not rush
ICantCopeAnymore · 10/06/2018 12:36

I almost had an accident once when exactly that happened. Flip flop got wedged under the brake pedal, I couldn't bend and get it out, I had to drop down gears and pull onto the hard shoulder. It was terrifying. I'd never, ever drive in flip flops again.

I was lucky that day there was nothing in front of me that I'd needed to brake for.
