To think Scotland has a better future than England

The state of the UK today makes me utterly depressed. A Brexit voted for on the basis of lies, an anti-immigrant rhetoric, and a general attitude of unwelcome.

But yet, in Scotland, the message is very different - a focus on welcoming people to the country, an opposition to Brexit, and a real debate about the future.

It genuinely saddens me to be part of a wider country that appears intent on going back, but never forward.

Power grab leaves our parliament unable to oppose fracking in Scotland amongst other things.

Rona is not being rude.

LagunaBubbles · 14/06/2018 13:06

Nichola Sturgeon won't give up until she gets what she wants, so there will be another vote, and if that fails another, because that is her idea of democracy, subjecting the country to that trauma rather than gracefully accepting that she lost, and the majority of Scottish people do not want independence

Well of course she wont give up regarding independence, the clue is in the parties name and their reason for existing, Im always amazed that this gets trotted out as if its something bad or comes as a surprise! And democracy means things can change, people - and their opinions can change....

Silentnighttwo · 14/06/2018 13:10

You should have been an English person in Glasgow at the time of the independence referendum; the hate was palpable. I would have gladly settled for feeling “unwelcome”.

YABU and misinformed.

cornishstripes · 14/06/2018 13:20

we can all rest assured that if NS loses another indy vote, she'll be out on her ear. Of course, the SNP will carry on the fight.

If there was a serious suggestion of fracking in Scotland, would we only expect Scottish people to protest? Frankly I'd expect anyone with a conscience across the whole of the UK to campaign.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 14/06/2018 13:35

I felt really sorry for the Scottish people yesterday when I saw the little tantrum their SNP MPs had yesterday, what a shambles.

Its easy to say Scotland are 'welcoming' to immigrants when its only England the immigrants want to get to.

Its easy to give free prescriptions when its the English who pay for them.
Its easy to have 'free' university when you stop most people going to them.
Scotland seems to be living in a bubble, if that pops they will be fcuked.

I am proud to be English, trying to live within our means and getting real independence.

I felt really sorry for the Scottish people yesterday when I saw the little tantrum their SNP MPs had yesterday, what a shambles

Why? The SNP were correct to walk out - the Speaker was ignoring parliamentary procedure, and not a single Scottish MP able to speak about the devolution issues the previous day was utterly taking the piss.

I am proud to be English, trying to live within our means and getting real independence

Interesting that you are proud to be English rather than British, says it all really. Hopefully your real independence will include being rid of the millstone around the neck that is Scotland....

Mossend · 14/06/2018 13:53

The Scottish education system is failing children with SEN, the rural health service provision here is failing its patients and the rail network that is failing commuters so if Scotland has a better future than England I really feel sorry for the people of England because everything is not all rosy up here

LagunaBubbles · 14/06/2018 13:58

easy to give free prescriptions when its the English who pay for them

Oh not heard that one before. So Scottish people don't pay taxes eh? Thankfully our NHS is devolved and the SNP use some of the budget for free prescriptions for all which is actually cheaper to administer than means testing for them. If you want free prescriptions you need to lobby your own ministers for that.

cornishstripes · 14/06/2018 14:12

so Scottish people are allowed to be proud to be Scots, but English people are only allowed to be proud to be British? Something not quite logical there!

Frankly, I'm with Samuel Johnson on patriotism being the last refuge of a scoundrel.

SilverySurfer · 14/06/2018 14:39

I've read nothing in the thread that would make me agree with your title OP.

Prior to the run-up to the indyref I was vehemently opposed to Scottish independence. I didn't believe it was for the good of Scotland or England/Wales/NI. During the run-up I read some vile posts on here and elsewhere which were not only directed against NO voters but also England and the English. One English person living in Scotland described the amount of bullying and hatred directed towards her child in school. Reading that made me angry and I am now of the opinion that if Scotland want independence and to be run by a one policy party then they should have it.

Sink or swim I no longer care.

PS You may notice a significant dip in Scotch whisky sales, I've recently switched allegiance to Jamiesons Grin

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/06/2018 14:42

That's not what I said - I was pointing out that it was a tad hypocritical for someone to be so against Scottish independence, but so for for English independence...

Luckymummy22 · 14/06/2018 14:43

Wow is all I can say to this thread!!!! The amount of hatred is scary.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/06/2018 14:45

I know Sad It's really sad how much some English people seem to despise Scotland Sad

Nyx · 14/06/2018 15:04

Cornish - re fracking - this doesn't exactly warm my heart and fill me with confidence

Scotland takes more out of the tax pot than anywhere else in the UK, bar N.I., about £1400 per person more. So yes English people are paying for free prescriptions in Scotland.

I was pointing out that it was a tad hypocritical for someone to be so against Scottish independence, but so for for English independence...
The point I was making was that the SNP are seeking to be independent from the UK only to shekel themselves and become dependant and beholden to the EU. So is that real independence?
England (& Wales) are becoming independent from the EU and not then giving it away to someone else.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/06/2018 15:13

...Tories, who most Scots detest as an alien alliance between snarling English nationalists and avaricious Etonians

Err ... what was that someone was saying about Scots' hatred of the English being just a figment of the imagination? Hmm

And that's without some of the remarks made during the Indyref campaign

IIIustriousIyIIlogical · 14/06/2018 15:33

As an English person who was rooting for Scotland to vote for independence I wish them luck & don't let the door hit their arse on the way out!

I'll be interested to see just how independent they are when no-one else is propping them up....

Nyx · 14/06/2018 15:39

Illustrious - with our resources - as I said earlier, we are a resource rich country with plenty to export, wind and wave energy, clean water and plenty of it, food and drink industry worth billions, whisky industry ditto, even gin now doing rather well, tourism, financial sector, games industry, etc etc etc (oh, and oil too, although we all know what a burden oil is to a country), who knows - maybe we might be able to pay pensions that aren't the worst in the developed world. I can't wait to see how we do as a normal independent country, like all the other normal independent countries.

Nyx · 14/06/2018 15:41

And it's good to see you're wishing us luck. I mean, it will be much better for rUK surely, to have a country with a growing and hopefully thriving economy next door, to be a good and happy neighbour rather than the alleged millstone we are to you at the moment.

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 14/06/2018 15:51

Prescriptions are free because charging costs more in admin than giving them away. Look it up.

IIIustriousIyIIlogical · 14/06/2018 15:57

And it's good to see you're wishing us luck.

I truly am...

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 14/06/2018 16:00

It looks very much like the SNP are once again trying divide and conquer tactics in order to increase support for independence, as a majority of Scots remain stubbornly unconvinced. They are once again painting themselves as ‘Scotland’ and every perceived slight against them as an attack on ‘Scotland’. They are now provoking Westminster in every way imaginable, opening declaring their intent to frustrate Brexit. This will increase ill will towards Scotland (which they claim to represent) which they can then use to foster ill will from Scots towards the rUK. It appears it may be working, if some of the comments on this thread are any indication.

I sincerely hope that people all around the UK see through this blatant hatemongering. Please know that the majority of Scots do not support the SNP or independence, and there is a huge amount of anger and embarrassment up here about their behaviour. This thread is a great insight into just how divided we are, and the SNP most definitely do not speak for all of us.

speakout · 14/06/2018 16:01

Prescriptions are free because charging costs more in admin than giving them away. Look it up.

Exactly.

Most prescriptions are given to the sick, those with life limiting conditions, those who don't work and the elderly- who get them free.

It costs more to administer the charges and the exemptions than revenue raised.

Calyx · 14/06/2018 16:08

The SNP are not the only party who are for independence for Scotland.

They are standing up for Scotland's interests with their anti-Brexit line. All outcomes of Brexit will be bad for Scotland (also rUK)

They are standing up against the unpicking of the devolution agreement which began with Labour and against the dissolution of the Scottish Parliament.

Some people want to keep the Union at any cost but their views are not my views. I do not and never have hated those people.

People who make out that wanting independence for Scotland is hateful are wrong.
