Reposted from Feminism Chat as more people need to see this.

Neither Miller nor Yearwood have got times that would be remotely remarkable for boys (200th and 443rd respectively) but they are smashing the girls' records out of the park as now they identify as girls, they're allowed to race them instead.

Watch the face of the girl who comes third. That's pretty much her best ever 100m race. But she didn't win.

Self identification means this kind of thing will keep on happening. If you value women's sport and think that women and girls deserve to compete on a level playing field, please sign the petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/214118

as far as I'm concerned it was the girl that won

Yup. That girl who came in first is the clear winner to me 🏆

To be honest, I don’t see why a male bodied person beating a female bodied person is more unfair than an able bodied person beating a disabled person

Able body people generally don't compete against physically disabled people. There would be an uproar if they did.

Noqont · 07/06/2018 17:40

On a more mundane note, I don’t think it’s very nice to use videos of children to make a political point. Whatever your views on this issue, you can make your point without using some poor teen’s face.

They want to put it out there and race against the girls, thats their lookout.

longlostpal · 07/06/2018 17:42

From what I understand, this is already a thing at the paralympics! Athletes go from doctor to doctor so they can get certified in a lower category and therefore race against people who are less able bodied!

I think it underlines the fact that competitive sports and physical equality are never going to be compatible. IMO competitive sports always favour the strongest/healthiest body, and as such are always aligned with patriarchy, which is also ultimately underpinned by physical (and economic/social) might.

I think the important thing is equality of opportunity for all. College sports scholarships and the price of US colleges are grossly unfair - that system is a true scandal. It’s scandalous that better sportspeople get a cheaper ride and that the rich get a better education than the poor. The system already favours men (as the more lucrative college sports are played by men, so guys get better scholarships). I don’t know if there are enough sporty trans teens for it to have a further impact on cis women, but if so yes that is as. However i strongly feel the answer is to reform the broken system. I don’t feel like I can pin the blame on teenagers for this system.

That was meant to be that girl who came in third is the clear winner to me.

The 'girl' who literally came first is a boy.

expatinscotland · 07/06/2018 17:43

Poor girls.

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 07/06/2018 17:44

We aren't blaming the teenagers. We're blaming the idiotic adults who allowed two teenage boys to run in the girls race.

Yup. That girl who came in first is the clear winner to me 🏆

Except the first girl was third.

JacquesHammer · 07/06/2018 17:44

@longlostpal

The very definition of sport is it’s competitive nature.

I play rugby. I don’t want to play against men. That shouldn’t be something I’m having to worry about. But it is.

She's called Bridget Lalonde :)

Sorry cross (in two senses of the word) posted

Catastrophik · 07/06/2018 17:45

I can tell from the video which are boys

Catastrophik · 07/06/2018 17:45

*cant

sheldonesque · 07/06/2018 17:46

Precisely noqont

I am so tired of this pish.

I identify as a 5ft 10 minted supermodel. Doesn't give me a bastard runway walk in Milan though does it?

DepressedAspie · 07/06/2018 17:47

What an utter farce.

InStarbucksImSally · 07/06/2018 17:48

Rachel Dolezal was vilified as identifying as black yet society deems this sort of shite acceptable.

Noqont · 07/06/2018 17:49

I can tell from the video which are boys

I can spot them a mile off.

Strigiformes · 07/06/2018 17:49

This is so unfair on all the females in the race. There's a chance that they might miss out on university scholarship because two males were allowed to compete alongside them. Shame on who ever allowed this to happen.

Noqont · 07/06/2018 17:50

Anyway she did win the women's race, obviously, as the two people in front of her weren't women.

FloraFox · 07/06/2018 17:51

I don’t know if there are enough sporty trans teens for it to have a further impact on cis women, but if so yes that is as.

How many girls or women being cheated out of sports competition is enough, in your view?

sheldonesque · 07/06/2018 17:53

The shame is on those who allow this to happen.

However the shame is also on those who choose to run knowing they have a physical advantage and could deny someone their rightful scholarship.

I don’t know of any trans girls taking a girls sports scholarship. I don’t even know if colleges have quotas for male and female scholarships. But my broader point is that US college admissions, the exorbitant cost of college and the favouring of sporty and legacy students all adds up to enormous inequality - the answer is to reform that system not worry about kids playing sport

BoneyBackJefferson · 07/06/2018 17:55

I don’t know if there are enough sporty trans teens for it to have a further impact on cis women

do you not find it ironic that the chant is
"transwomen are women" yet Women are cis women?

RoseWhiteTips · 07/06/2018 17:55

Hmmmm.
