To think yummy banana penicillin isn't a thing any more?

DS (3) has had swollen tonsils for over a week, so is now on antibiotics. I was expecting a bottle of that delicious banana gloop I remember from my childhood but instead he has this bright red liquid, of the sort liberally splashed around on Game of Thrones or similarly violent media.

I can just about get it down him but I do feel a bit like the poor mite has been short-changed? Where's the yummy bright yellow banana gloop gone?

We had yellow banana gloop for ds1 when he got an ear infection last year. I tried it and it’s pretty vile though - you could taste the ab’s through the taste of bananas.

MrsJacksonBrodieTheSecond · 04/06/2018 15:54

Is it a specific type of AB rather than a cure all one?

jamoncrumpets · 04/06/2018 15:55

I bloody loved that stuff as a kid. Which is good because I got bacterial tonsillitis about 4x a year.

I'm sure it still is out there - DD was prescribed antibiotics for a chest infection about 6 months ago and it was the banana stuff

MsChanandlerBoing · 04/06/2018 15:55

The banana one is amoxicillin (and delicious!) and the red one is phenoxymethylpenicillin - you give the red one for tonsillitis and it is disgusting - sorry!

jamoncrumpets · 04/06/2018 15:56

It's Phenoxymethylpenicillin

It was probably full of sugar, like the old calpol (that I loved so much as a toddler, that when I found an open bottle at a friend's house, I necked a load of it and had to be taken to the doctor Blush)

jamoncrumpets · 04/06/2018 15:57

I've stocked up on Jaffa cakes to 'take the taste away' bribe him with

YABU the yellow banana penicillin tasted ole the devil

UnaOfStormhold · 04/06/2018 15:58

I absolutely loathed the banana one as a child so when DS was prescribed some lately I feared the worst, but he lapped it up and said how nice it was!

jamoncrumpets · 04/06/2018 15:58

You can still get sugary Calpol! I give it to DS. I figure if he's going to be in pain or have a fever he might as well have a small sugary consolation.

I’m allergic to penicillin but was always given banana gloop as a child so maybe it’s not penicillin?

Unfortunately I bloody hate banana so it wasn’t a treat for me!

TroubledLichen · 04/06/2018 16:00

That banana gloop is the reason I gag if I smell a banana. I had it following a tonsillectomy as a child and my disgust for bananas, which I quite liked up until then, is so bad I had to move desks at work due to a frequent banana eater. I would be very pleased indeed if it is no more!

CheeseAndTomSandwich · 04/06/2018 16:00

Yep banana amoxicillin in my fridge right now for sons tooth infection. Smells vaguely like banana but he says it tastes terrible.

musicinthe00ssucks · 04/06/2018 16:04

I’m allergic to Penicillin so had to endure the misery of the pink boak inducing liquorice stuff

Notso · 04/06/2018 16:11

DD wouldn't tolerate the red one for her frequent tonsillitis, she'd throw it up so got given the banana one instead but it apparently doesn't work as well for tonsillitis. I can't stand the banana one or calpol, both make me heave.

Nikephorus · 04/06/2018 16:15

That's why I couldn't stand the stuff!!! I hate bananas....

MsChanandlerBoing · 04/06/2018 16:21

notso it’s not just that the banana one doesn’t work as well for tonsillitis - if it’s actually a viral tonsillitis amoxicillin can interact badly with the virus causing a severe rash (not an allergy). On the other hand if they had a swab result showing it was a bacterial tonsillitis then it’s safer to switch if she really wasn’t happy with the red one.

kaytee87 · 04/06/2018 16:22

Oh my toddler had the yellow gloop for an ear infection. It smelled disgustingly sweet.

happymummy12345 · 04/06/2018 16:23

My ds had it earlier this year.

Fatted · 04/06/2018 16:25

My DS was prescribed some rank yellow antibiotics for a throat infection the other week. I had to sneak them into his drink, he refused to take them and just spat it all out at me Angry

DS1 had the banana one at one point, but it definitely tasted less sugary than I remembered! Full sugar Calpol is still available, but some places don't stock it though.

gryffen · 04/06/2018 16:33

Yep yellow bloop is amoxicillin and hasn't bloody changed in well over 25yrs since I had it first.
Daughter had it earlier in year for glue ear and perffed ear drum - gagging lol.

JJS888 · 04/06/2018 16:36

That must be hard for so many of the Mners who have food issues. If they don't allow a biscuit at playgroup, how do they accept the banana gloop?

megletthesecond · 04/06/2018 16:38

Yanbu.
They've ruined it now they've taken out the sugar. It's fluorescent yellow now too. I'm sure it was a lovely pastel yellow when I was little.

jamoncrumpets · 04/06/2018 16:39

We held off on the antibiotics for over a week and DS just got paler and more miserable, so I don't feel too guilty about forcing the red gloop down him. Though part of me thinks if the GP had just given it to us at the first appt he'd be better by now. I do understand why they don't hand out antibiotics like candy though, this is only the second lot he's ever had.
