To think yummy banana penicillin isn't a thing any more?

DS (3) has had swollen tonsils for over a week, so is now on antibiotics. I was expecting a bottle of that delicious banana gloop I remember from my childhood but instead he has this bright red liquid, of the sort liberally splashed around on Game of Thrones or similarly violent media.

I can just about get it down him but I do feel a bit like the poor mite has been short-changed? Where's the yummy bright yellow banana gloop gone?

The white antibiotic is the worst. Shocking gritty texture and bitter aftertaste. DS2 had it in hospital for a nasty chest infection. He's good about taking things but that had him gagging.

I work in elderly mental health and one of the guys had a liquid that looked like the infamous banana gloop! But obviously I couldn't try it to see if it still had that flavour haha x

It must be 30 years since I've had the banana gloop, but can still "taste" it now. Mmmm.

What was that awful chalky dark pink sachet for worms called - you made it up at home in the 80s? God, I can still taste it now - I'd rather have had the worms. Sad

LOADS of people loathe the banana one. It's very much a matter of personal taste and not objectively yummy.

I think you know lots of people hated it so yabu.

My son had banana amoxicillin goop a few months ago for tonsillitis... smelt nothing like bananas, it was neon yellow and by the look on his face it tasted absolutely nothing like bananas either 🤢

Oh god, you've just given me flashbacks!

I used to get frequent UTI's as a child and can remember the Banana Goop so well. Too well. I can see the bottle in the fridge so clearly.

@Oogle it was Erythromycin that was the non penicillin version. I loved that stuff. It almost made frequent bouts of tonsillitis worthwhile 😂

The banana stuff is still about. It's what the devils spunk must taste like. It's truly one of the most disgusting things i can imagine putting in my mouth. Dses refuse to take it so it's a total waste. Last time DS1 got an orange one which he found marginally more palatable and probably only spat out 70%.

Clarithromycin. It’s like wet chalk. It’s horrible but good for chest infections.

I remember ‘banana medicine’ from my constant ear infections as a child. It’s amoxicillin and doesn’t have all the lovely sugar in it now. PenV is quite disgusting but so is flucloxacillin which is orange.

DD2 had the banana amoxicillin a while ago. It tasted vile, I remember loving it as a kid!

My son hates the yellow one (more like pineapple than banana) and will only have the white one (orangey taste). I remember pripsen for worms, worst medicine ever! The taste and smell would literally make me gag.

DS had the banana amoxycillin just last month. So it still exists. It has to be made up fresh and kept in the fridge, DS had a 10 day course and I had to collect 5 days worth at a time as it doesn't keep long. Maybe that affects whether doctors prescribe it or not? If there's a version which keeps longer I can see why they'd opt for that?

It doesn't taste anywhere near as nice as it did 30+ years ago though. I was on it loads due to glue ear/infections and loved it!

Both kids were just on a course of enthromycin, my dd is usually really good with taking medicine but she kicked off every time, it's vile

oooh, i get frequent UTI's and struggle coaxing myself into swallowing pills, maybe next time i'll ask for banana goop, it doesn't matter that im 28 years not months, right? :P

So much hatred for the banana goop of the 80s. V disappointing. Maybe I just had a very deprived childhood. Grin

Only ever tried it once, got a bit on my finger when giving it to ds and automatically licked it off and thought that's quite nice, before remembering the last time I had penicillin was 25 years previously for tonsillitis and I had an allergic reaction to it.

Guess what? I'm still allergic and I had a huge lumpy hot rash covering my entire body within 5 mins Shock. Wont be trying again in a hurry!

Yep I had the gloopy pale yellow amoxil for my recurrent tonsilitis when I was small. Loved it. Gave me lovely stained bottom teeth though when they grew in.
