To think yummy banana penicillin isn't a thing any more?

DS (3) has had swollen tonsils for over a week, so is now on antibiotics. I was expecting a bottle of that delicious banana gloop I remember from my childhood but instead he has this bright red liquid, of the sort liberally splashed around on Game of Thrones or similarly violent media.

I can just about get it down him but I do feel a bit like the poor mite has been short-changed? Where's the yummy bright yellow banana gloop gone?

The white antibiotic is the worst. Shocking gritty texture and bitter aftertaste. DS2 had it in hospital for a nasty chest infection. He's good about taking things but that had him gagging.

I work in elderly mental health and one of the guys had a liquid that looked like the infamous banana gloop! But obviously I couldn't try it to see if it still had that flavour haha x

thelastredwinegum · 04/06/2018 16:55

It must be 30 years since I've had the banana gloop, but can still "taste" it now. Mmmm.

Bumblebee2302 · 04/06/2018 17:00

What was that awful chalky dark pink sachet for worms called - you made it up at home in the 80s? God, I can still taste it now - I'd rather have had the worms. Sad

blackteasplease · 04/06/2018 17:00

LOADS of people loathe the banana one. It's very much a matter of personal taste and not objectively yummy.

I think you know lots of people hated it so yabu.

blackteasplease · 04/06/2018 17:01

The worms one was horrendous bumble I remember. Like death.

FranticallyPeaceful · 04/06/2018 17:02

My son had banana amoxicillin goop a few months ago for tonsillitis... smelt nothing like bananas, it was neon yellow and by the look on his face it tasted absolutely nothing like bananas either 🤢

lifechangesforever · 04/06/2018 17:04

I had to have my stomach pumped as a child for downing calpol Blushbet my parents didn't thank me for that one!

It was just so good..

0h · 04/06/2018 17:06

Oh god, you've just given me flashbacks!

I used to get frequent UTI's as a child and can remember the Banana Goop so well. Too well. I can see the bottle in the fridge so clearly.

madvixen · 04/06/2018 17:07

@Oogle it was Erythromycin that was the non penicillin version. I loved that stuff. It almost made frequent bouts of tonsillitis worthwhile 😂

MrsKoala · 04/06/2018 17:14

The banana stuff is still about. It's what the devils spunk must taste like. It's truly one of the most disgusting things i can imagine putting in my mouth. Dses refuse to take it so it's a total waste. Last time DS1 got an orange one which he found marginally more palatable and probably only spat out 70%.

MrsKoala · 04/06/2018 17:15

I used to fake a sore throat for Veno's Honey and Lemon.

4dogs · 04/06/2018 17:15

Pripsen was the vile stuff for worms and is the reason milkshakes still make me feel sick.

PuppetOnAString · 04/06/2018 17:18

The white antibiotic is the worst. Shocking gritty texture and bitter aftertaste.

Clarithromycin. It’s like wet chalk. It’s horrible but good for chest infections.

I remember ‘banana medicine’ from my constant ear infections as a child. It’s amoxicillin and doesn’t have all the lovely sugar in it now. PenV is quite disgusting but so is flucloxacillin which is orange.

Bumblebee2302 · 04/06/2018 17:39

Thanks 4dogs - gross stuff

CheeseAndBeans · 04/06/2018 17:41

DD2 had the banana amoxicillin a while ago. It tasted vile, I remember loving it as a kid!

chloworm · 04/06/2018 17:43

My son hates the yellow one (more like pineapple than banana) and will only have the white one (orangey taste). I remember pripsen for worms, worst medicine ever! The taste and smell would literally make me gag.

Roomba · 04/06/2018 17:47

DS had the banana amoxycillin just last month. So it still exists. It has to be made up fresh and kept in the fridge, DS had a 10 day course and I had to collect 5 days worth at a time as it doesn't keep long. Maybe that affects whether doctors prescribe it or not? If there's a version which keeps longer I can see why they'd opt for that?

It doesn't taste anywhere near as nice as it did 30+ years ago though. I was on it loads due to glue ear/infections and loved it!

Unevenbeard · 04/06/2018 17:52

Both kids were just on a course of enthromycin, my dd is usually really good with taking medicine but she kicked off every time, it's vile

wrenika · 04/06/2018 17:54

I remember that banana stuff...I absolutely loathed it!

AlmostAJillSandwich · 04/06/2018 17:54

oooh, i get frequent UTI's and struggle coaxing myself into swallowing pills, maybe next time i'll ask for banana goop, it doesn't matter that im 28 years not months, right? :P

jamoncrumpets · 04/06/2018 18:00

So much hatred for the banana goop of the 80s. V disappointing. Maybe I just had a very deprived childhood. Grin

Only ever tried it once, got a bit on my finger when giving it to ds and automatically licked it off and thought that's quite nice, before remembering the last time I had penicillin was 25 years previously for tonsillitis and I had an allergic reaction to it.

Guess what? I'm still allergic and I had a huge lumpy hot rash covering my entire body within 5 mins Shock. Wont be trying again in a hurry!

HulaMelody · 04/06/2018 19:06

Yep I had the gloopy pale yellow amoxil for my recurrent tonsilitis when I was small. Loved it. Gave me lovely stained bottom teeth though when they grew in.
