To stockpile food, medicine and petrol?

So apparently we're now at very high risk of exiting the EU in March without a trade agreement with the EU. The government wanted to keep it secret, but it's been leaked that the middle of the 3 outcomes they're discussing, so not the bad one, is the port of Dover collapsing on day 1, immediate food shortages and almost immediate petrol and medicine shortages - as in, no food in the supermarkets. It's in the Sunday Times. AIBU to start stockpiling?

To stockpile food, medicine and petrol?

Thanks, Pretzels.
If people are aware that there’s no checks coming into the UK then all sorts of stuff is going to be snuck in.
But hey. Blue passports.

Blaablaablaa · 04/06/2018 13:24

@new couldn't be arsed to read the full thread because I'm bored of the sheer arrogance displayed by remainers and I (rightly ) assumed this thread would be another shining example of that. But the original post was so utterly ridiculous ( stock piling petrol ... seriously?? And they say brexiteers are stupid 🙄) I felt compelled to comment.

Tambien · 04/06/2018 13:24

Reginal letting stuff going in just like this wouod put thé U.K. in a real difficult place re ETO terms and wouod end up in a worse situation.
There is NO WAY you can just not do the border stuff. And paperwork IS necessary.

It seems people are really too used to the EU and the free circulation of goods to actually remember what it mean to have customs in everything. And how it’s not possible to NOT do it

NewMinouMinou · 04/06/2018 13:25

You should have known that already.
It’s not arrogance, it’s fury and despair.

Tambien · 04/06/2018 13:27

Blaablaa arrogance?
You mean because they actually have a bit more knowledge than You about what is actually happening? And what are the actual capabilities of their country?
Displaying this level of ignorance and then saying it’s other people who are stupid IS being arrogant imo....

NewMinouMinou · 04/06/2018 13:28

Yeah, Tambien, but it’s so boooooringgggg....

Blaablaablaa · 04/06/2018 13:30

How do you know that I'm not knowledgeable?

NewMinouMinou · 04/06/2018 13:32

Look, I don’t care whether you are or not.
You’ve shown that you don’t know why your argument here is wrong, that’s all that matters here.

Icantreachthepretzels · 04/06/2018 13:32

What are May's red lines on this particular option that are preventing it?
Her red lines are literally the SM and the CM. According to her we are leaving them and that is that. So no Norway deal.
But we are not having a hard border in Ireland, or a border in the sea - so we need to be in them. But we're leaving. But we're not breaking up the UK. But we can't do both.
Plus she wants to stop freedom of movement - Norway still has that.
Plus an access to CM and SM will come with ECJ oversight - and she wants all that gone.

This is nothing the EU have told her has to happen. This is not what was on the ballot paper on referendum day. These red lines are entirely of her own making. But by sticking to them she makes it impossible for a deal. The EU won't negotiate a deal until the border issue is sorted - and there is currently no solution to the border. And the clock is ticking.

Negotiations on trade are meant to start this month - but as no progress has been made on the border issue, it is unlikely they will proceed. The deal has to be agreed by October to allow for any of the 27 nations who constitutionally need to have a referendum on it time to ratify it.
That is unlikely to happen

Hence why a crash out is becoming increasing likely - and why we should all be up in arms about what the govt are doing.
Maybe brexit didn't have to be a disaster - but this form of brexit is a disaster - and we should have the right to tell the govt we don't want the brexit they have achieved, before it is too late to do anything about it.

Blaablaablaa · 04/06/2018 13:35

@new what you've written doesn't even make sense. Oh, is it because I don't agree with your point of view?

NewMinouMinou · 04/06/2018 13:38

No. You demonstrated by saying that all the countries already outside the eu are ok, therefore we will be too, that you didn’t know they also are in trading blocs.

I don’t know what your point of view is. I just know that you didn’t know that. You didn’t express a point of view, you merely said sth that’s the inaccurate.

Icantreachthepretzels · 04/06/2018 13:38

I have to believe that some of these posters are bots. Because if we truly live in a country where people: learning facts, applying those facts to a situation, and then making a decision on the back of those self same facts, is seen as 'arrogance' - then quite frankly we deserve everything we fucking get. And there is no hope for any of us.

NewMinouMinou · 04/06/2018 13:39

That’s inaccurate, rather.

Pfftlife · 04/06/2018 13:39

Could be doing with loosing a few pounds and walking more

NewMinouMinou · 04/06/2018 13:40

I know. “Ehhh, ehhh, my point of view; ya don’t like it so you call me names...”

Such cliched nonsense.

Kursk · 04/06/2018 13:40

If we have to let all lorries into the country without inspection, in order to prevent riots, then nobody will ever sign a FTA with us.

I expect that customs will be lifted after the first week of civil unrest. Once the Government realizes it’s lost control. But it will be too little too late at that point.

NewMinouMinou · 04/06/2018 13:41

Exactly, Kursk. Then it’ll be a bloody free-for-all.

Tit4TatandAllThat · 04/06/2018 13:41

Pfftlife and learning to spell 🙄

DGRossetti · 04/06/2018 13:43

Stockpiling anything is a waste of time unless you also have weapons are are prepared to use them to defend your stockpile(s) from those that didn't stockpile (like most of the posters here).

Most preppers start with ammunition ...

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/06/2018 13:45

Ah, ok, thank you both re 'red lines' definition. I am Irish (but living in uk) so deeply concerned at the whole mess with the border anyway, from the peace process to what it means for small businesses along the border and all other kinds of shit in between.

eazycloth · 04/06/2018 13:45

bloody brexit Angry

lostinsunshine · 04/06/2018 13:45

Brexit vote fundamentally changed the way I look at my fellow Brits. I am now more likely to think "Fuck you, starve for all I care ", than I did before. Things have come to a pretty pass now my compassion has been flushed down the toilet. I voted Remain. A small majority didn't. I take care of my family and make sure we're fed and warm and have light to read books by. I enjoy all the comforts and conveniences that my meagre wage can afford now but, should it go tits up, I can still eat, drink, stay warm and lit. I don't care if you cannot.

NewMinouMinou · 04/06/2018 13:48

Exactly, Lost. Most of our nearest and dearest are in positions to get out. I look at people who are still staunch leavers and I just think “fuck you”.
This is how people’s lives are changing.

lettuceWrap · 04/06/2018 13:48

As I mentioned upthread- I live rurally, and tend to do several large shoppings a year at Costco.

Because I live about half an hour brisk walk (in good weather!) from the nearest village/small shop, I’m pretty careful about what I buy for “emergency supplies” food (rather than general bulk food buying)... it’s not unknown for the power to go out for several days and the roads can be pretty difficult in stormy weather. The village shop runs out almost everything edible in a couple of days if there’s bad snow!

Pp mentioning buying extra bags of rice upthread - that’s no good to you unless you can cook it- can you cook if the power is off?
Rice takes a lot of water and energy to cook - I have a wood burning stove which has flat cooking area on it, but even so, rice would be a lot of faff... flour, water and oil would be much faster and a better mix of nutrients (fried, unleavened bread/chapati/tortilla type of thing), beans, canned meat etc - things that are either quick to cook or don’t need cooked at all. You want nutrient dense stuff too- plenty of fat and calories. Nuts and chocolate are both good from that point of view, and aren’t the first thing that would be cleared out of the shops...

I

NewMinouMinou · 04/06/2018 13:48

I’m not happy about thinking that way. We’ve lost something.
