I have a DD 9mths I just bought her a adorable dress which says whales and girls are best friends. (It’s for 18 months from the charity shop but it’s too cute!)

My mum saved my patchwork velvet coat from when I was 3 as she loved it so much. I know children aren’t dolls but what are your kids favorite outfits? Do you find their taste in clothes changed a lot as they grew up?

Also any recommendations for female\human positive clothing? I just bought goodnight stories for rebel girls and I’m finding it quite and eye opener a lot of the this I had as a kid didn’t give a lot of range and was quite sexist.

When dd1 was a baby she had a leopard print snowsuit I loved and kept. She's now 9 and raids my t-shirts, has a definite style of her own we have very similar tastes! She wears bright printed leggings or shorts and character tops. She's told me she prefers boy clothes and doesn't want to be girly.

Dd2 I had a pair of tartan leggings and matching top she looked adorable in them. She's almost 6 and completely different to dd1 she wears the swishiest skirts/dresses and always has a giant bow in her hair and sparkly/pink everything!

I've always let them choose what they want to wear, they enjoy picking out clothes we look in the boys and girls sections (definitely think there should be unisex clothes until they need to be different to suit body shapes)

I love bright colours for DD. She has a bright yellow hoodie which I enjoy with her bright red or purple trousers. Because if you can't wear loud clothes when you're 3 when can you? I don't like to dress little children like mini adults. She had some yellow and white striped trousers when she was younger that I absolutely adored.

For DS (10 months) I'm a sucker for a nice pair of dungarees. He has a lovely pair that fit him now with all kinds of different animals on them. They are cream so not very bright but after bright colours my second favourite thing is animal prints.

LadyOdd · 02/06/2018 23:35

Aww your kids sound adorable! The leopard print snowsuit sounds epic. Your two sound like they really have their own style, I used to steal my mums clothes it drove her mad lol I also love putting my lo in dungereers she has a purple and green pair with a mouse on.

I agree with the bright colors also makes them easier to find!

I loved mine in denim dungarees with a brightly coloured baby vest underneath. They looked especially gorgeous when they started walking; just something so cute about a tiny person toddling about in dungarees! Those dungarees served us well!

I really like DS in bright colours, my favourites are his dinosaur tracksuit bottoms and a bright pink t-shirt (though maybe not together).

My DM has kept a pair of red real German leiderhosen my DBro used to wear as a toddler. We just need a formal occasion for DS to wear them before they get too tiny!

LadyOdd Not clothes but a book, ‘prayer for a blueberry girl’ by Neil Gaiman. I think it’s so beautiful.

Those lederhosen sound soo cute! Please do get him in them, I’m still upset DD didn’t get a chance to wear her rainbow harem bottoms as I had misplaced them.

That’s an interesting article book lover Inhad a quick glance, amazing that no one even noticed that they have been doing gender neutral since 2016!

Ds is,3, with no opinion on his clothes beyond which hat he wants on and trying to live in wellies. I love him in dungarees, proper denim ones.

He had an awesome snow cost when he was small from the girls range in Next, was white and multi colored and a brown bear one from Mothercare. Too old for them now:(

Camomila · 03/06/2018 00:22

No, the dinosaur trousers are from M&S. He’s got some insect trousers from peacocks though. I like peacocks kids things but there isn’t one in my town so I don’t go very often.

fabulousfrumpyfeet · 03/06/2018 00:23

I have two boys and I think they look lovely in smart but comfy jeans and a nice jumper. They have other ideas - today ds2 was wearing tights, football shorts and a stripy t-shirt, ds1 was head to toe in black thermals and nothing else! I'm happy for them to choose their own weird clothes most of the but occasionally I make them let me choose 😀

SleepingStandingUp · 03/06/2018 00:24

What age did people's boys start wanting an opinion on clothing?

LadyOdd · 03/06/2018 00:39

I live in my black wellness with pink stars and black tutu (I was 6) for 4 months! I love real dungarees too, I got my DD a real denim jacket for when she 2 I’m a bit over invested and already bought some patches.

I’ve been dressing DD in a lot of bright orange recently no idea why, she’s got some cute leggings which have little bears dressed as native Americans with horses etc...love them but also feel a bit odd about them...none of them are wearing headdress but still feels a bit wrong (they were a gift)

tealandteal · 03/06/2018 06:49

When DS was about 3 months old he had a gorgeous pair of mustard Dungarees with seagulls on. He has had the Dungarees in several prints, current size has whales on but the seagull fabric was the best. It's been discontinued now Sad

SnugglySnerd · 03/06/2018 06:55

There is definitely nothing cuter than a toddler in dungarees!

I kept a t shirt that dd1 wore aged 1. It's stripy with a big sun on it and seemed to fit her personality perfectly. I got it out for DD2 last week then couldn't put it on her as it's dd1's special t shirt even though it won't fit her!

TheSkyAtNight · 03/06/2018 08:55

Dd (2.5) has a pair of bright pink striped baggy cropped trousers I got second hand. She looks like a tiny skateboarder/pirate! They suit her personality so well & look so comfy :)

toomuchtooold · 03/06/2018 08:57

DD2 had this second hand winter coat when she was 2, it was filled with like puffa jacket lining and it was red cotton, with a little dog appliquéd onto one pocket. It'd been washed a million times and it was really soft. She wanted to wear it all the time - I have a picture of her wearing it in bright sunshine in August - I remember having to hide it while she was napping, as it was way too hot to wear.

DD1 never had favourite clothes in that way when she was tiny but I do remember her being so enamored of her new Mr Tumble pyjamas that I let her wear them to nursery. You've got all that to look forward to, OP - some time around 18m they start having (strong) opinions about what to wear and while it can be hard watching your favourite outfits go unworn, it's worth letting them choose their own outfits because they are really awesome.

CombineBananaFister · 03/06/2018 09:06

Am reading this thread with interest in the hope it throws up some good ideas. Since DS turned 8 we've really struggled to find anything he likes, he's still into the colourful ,fun clothes associated with younger children but most clothes his size seem to be a variation of black/grey and sporty
He's also got severe eczema so has to be 100%cotton and oekotex standard.
His favourite outfit has got a big icelolly on it Grin

DeadButDelicious · 03/06/2018 09:15

I love to dress DD in bright primary colours and bold prints, we got this absolutely beautiful rainbow sundress from little bird. She looks BEAUTIFUL in it. I'm loving all the tropical bird prints around this summer as well.

That's not my DD in the picture BTW, it's a stock photo.
