To use the same towel all week

Is that disgusting?

We use the same towels all week and wash them once a week on a Sunday. I thought this was fine until someone told me they change their towels every day.

Once a week change on a Saturday. All towels washed on a Saturday although hand towels and tea towels are changed more frequently.

My mother’s colleagues young son went off to university and in the holidays when he was back at home he asked ‘Mum how do you get toweksbto smell nice?’. ‘Erm I wash them’, he was astounded as he didn’t think towels got washed.

Eliza9917 · 03/06/2018 02:26

Meh, me and DP have used THE SAME TOWEL for the last two days and we aren't dead yet.

It's only laziness because all our stuff goes upstairs once washed and our bathroom is on the same floor as our living areas; living room, kitchen, bathroom and I brought one down the other day when I had a shower and left it on the hooks on the back of the living room door to dry. Cos I got dressed in the living room.

Yes I am a slattern and I don't care.

imweirdandcool · 03/06/2018 04:04

I change mine every 2 or 3 uses but I don't think a week is disgusting tbh. Two yes

HoppingPavlova · 03/06/2018 05:02

Most people will drop dead of disgust as we all use the same towel. My mind boggles as to where we would find room in the bathroom to hang 4 wet towels up to dry. Only exception is when DD has her period then she throws it in the wash and gets a fresh one for the next person. Each towel is used for approx 2/3 days so we use 3/4 towels a week. The hand towels get washed once a week with the towels. We have been doing this for over 10 years since the kids moved to adult sized towels, we have all survived and there have been no untoward skin conditions etc. We do use separate face washers in the shower though as 4 hooks in there are easy to fit, they are washed once a week with the towels.

Obviously if we have guests we provide them with a fresh towel/face washer eachGrin.

Shiftymake · 03/06/2018 05:16

I've spent years teaching DP and kids alike that one of my pet hates is finding towels on the floor Grin I don't see towels on the floor anymore! Towels get washed roughly once a week.

PlumsGalore · 03/06/2018 05:33

Every 2-3 days here. We all share towels though. So one towel could potentially have been used 5-6 times.

Which brings me into a different question.

Where does the average family dry their towels between uses? So we gave a heated towel rail, but it isn't on when the heating isn't and it isn't big enough for 2 or 3 bath towels and they need to air between uses.

So does everyone else end up hanging them over the landing bannister or throwing them in the dryer for ten minutes, is there some other way of drying them so they aren't a daily eyesore?

flippyfloppyflower · 03/06/2018 05:46

I change mine every second day. It's not to do with how clean I am when I use them but how quickly they dry in the bathroom after each use, i.e. they can take some time to dry so bacteria thrives in the damp and dark environment of my bathroom (not to mention faecal matter spray).

NaMajesty · 03/06/2018 05:47

Bath towels washed after each use. Hand towels and face cloths changed daily. Yes you are clean when you use a towel to dry yourself but when patting or rubbing your skin dry, you're basically scraping skin cells and all sorts of bacteria into your towels, and then you need to remember that towels are designed to hold water, which is the perfect environment for bacteria and mould growth.

A warm, damp towel in a warm, damp room used continuously by different people for an entire week is absolutely minging Envy

LunaMay · 03/06/2018 06:47

I tend to wash towels every 3 days or so, depending on the towel my hair ones might get changed more regularly as i find some dont soak up enough water after 1 or 2 uses, i wait and wash them all together though..

OrdinaryGirl · 03/06/2018 07:00

Inbedbyeight that's easy - wash them at 60 degrees. Cooler washes don't kill the germs that cause smells.

HarryLovesDraco · 03/06/2018 07:03

Hung up to dry after use, and washed once a week. I don't wash my hair every day but even so if the hair towel occasionally remains damp between uses I'll chuck it in the wash and get a new one but I think weekly is fine.

Nannyplumssillyoldelf · 03/06/2018 07:04

I change our towels weekly. We have hooks on the bathroom door for mine, Dd's goes on the hook on the back of my bedroom door, Ds's goes on a hook on the back of his door. Dp's goes on the bedroom radiator.

ScrubTheDecks · 03/06/2018 07:11

Ours are washed every week or two weeks. They don’t smell or look dirty.

Totally decadent and wasteful to wash them daily.

Bodicea · 03/06/2018 07:11

Change ours somewhere between 1 and 2 weeks. We have a large Airing cupboard. And a pole across for each towel which they go straight back on to and helps make them last. They are also made of bamboo which I highly reccomend. It has antibacterial qualities and they are the loveliest, thickest towels ever. They never smell. I have a couple of separate hair turbans.
I can’t believe how wasteful some people are changing them so regularly!

Cadencia · 03/06/2018 07:13

Once a week is absolutely fine and much better for the environment.

silverpenguin · 03/06/2018 07:14

About once every 5 days? A week sounds totally fine to me.

TimeToDash · 03/06/2018 07:15

Seems OTT. I wash them every couple of days unless the kids drop them on the floor as I don't know whose it is and I tend to just put anything on the floor straight in the washing basket.

TimeToDash · 03/06/2018 07:19

PlumsGalore we use heated towel rails too but they have the option of being switched on independently of the heating system.

TimeToDash · 03/06/2018 07:20

Except tea towels, kitchen cloths and hand towels, which are changed daily.

oohyoudevilyou · 03/06/2018 07:21

I wash the bath towels and bath mats (the thick towels you stand on) weekly but change hand towels every couple of days. We hang them up or drape them over a rail in the airing cupboard to dry between uses (after harvesting them from teens bedroom floors, obv) . What are people doing with their towels if they need to change them all daily?!

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/06/2018 07:27

Since I’ve been really ill, I’ve been leaving the towels a week and they start to smell. For me, it’s too long and it wouldn’t be through choice.

BlitheringIdiots · 03/06/2018 07:28

Very couple weeks or so

BlitheringIdiots · 03/06/2018 07:28

*every

Vitalogy · 03/06/2018 07:29

That's Fine.
I dry mine on one of those radiator airers in between.

Undercoverbanana · 03/06/2018 07:32

Towels washed once a week here.
