Most people I know haven't had a holiday in years

OP posts:
Turnocks34 · 01/06/2018 12:50

We normally have one ‘abroad holiday’, normally two weeks at Eurocamp, in France or Italy. We have a house in Ireland which we visit a few times a year, for bank holiday weekends etc. Sometimes I take the boys over for Easter holidays, Oh comes if he has the holidays left.

We also, last year, did one of those £9.50 sun holiday things after someone invited me into a group on Facebook with all these codes in. We got 4 days in Scarborough in a nice caravan for £60. It was much nicer than I thought.

We’re getting married next year, and we’re being a bit selfish and instead of taking the boys abroad, we’re having a bit of a special 4 day honeymoon in Florence. We'll then take the boys to Ireland for two weeks in the summer.

PlausibleSuit · 01/06/2018 12:58

Three or four a year. Usually one abroady thing, a couple of UK self-catering jobs with the dogs, and one wildcard if I see a good offer somewhere.

Both OH and I are self-employed so we have that flexibility, and can go outside of school holidays. Work for both of us can be pretty intense at times so it's nice to have regular breaks planned in, rather than one big summer hol.

We also went for years without having any holidays at all, when I had a very difficult employment situation and while we were building up the businesses, so I still feel lucky to be able to get away now.

I have loads of holidays a year but then I don't have kids, do most of them on a shoestring and I don't have anything else to spend my money on to be honest!

So far this year I have had a week in the Hebrides by myself, am going camping in Italy with DP next week, going to Wales for a week in August (Air BnB), camping in the South of France by myself in September and hopefully Tenerife over Christmas with friends unless it's £££.

TheVanguardSix · 01/06/2018 13:22

Once a year during summer, 10 days in Europe somewhere, usually France. This year Portugal. Too tired for long-haul and we’re on a budget, like most.

Teateaandmoretea · 01/06/2018 13:51

I don't personally consider it a holiday if I don't leave the country... so I call it a break.

Generally the point of language communication is to use the same terms as other people and a holiday is a holiday. Some of my very best holidays have been in the UK.

This is a really depressing thread of people showing off and trying to out-holiday each other while others can't afford to go camping.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 01/06/2018 14:08

I work term-time only and have lots of family in seaside resorts, so take dc to visit. That ups the tally!

This year: citybreak at Easter; camping abroad May half term; more camping (for two weeks) in the summer, citybreak summer; visiting family for a week summer; possibly another family visit in October half term.

Maddy70 · 01/06/2018 14:35

Every 6 /7 weeks sometimes somewhere exotic often in our campervan or a cheap flight on Skyscanner

brexitschmexit · 01/06/2018 14:47

Generally 3 "proper" holidays a year - two weeks in the summer holidays, one week around Christmas/new year (usually combined with seeing family) and one week in the Easter holidays.

Weedsnseeds1 · 01/06/2018 14:59

It varies. I travel a lot for work, so if I'm going somewhere interesting and I don't have other jobs booked in around that one, I take OH with me and book some holiday on the back of it. That way we only pay for one flight and accommodation is payed on the days I am working, so we book somewhere cheap and cheerful for the rest of it ( obviously I get less holiday than OH as I'm working for some of it). This year will be USA and Mauritius for working holidays. Last year was South Africa and Hong Kong.
Then generally book a week or so somewhere else, with neither of us working. This year Luxembourg, last year Italy and France. We live within reasonable distance of a few regional airports, so just see where there's a cheap flight and then find accommodation.
Because I use hotels a lot for work, I get lots of free nights, so use them for weekends or short breaks in the UK.
Then camping and a couple of festivals as well.
Neither of us are bothered about luxury hotels, so tend to go cheap and cheerful, usually self catering of some sort.

TheyBuiltThePyramids · 01/06/2018 15:07

Normally a 2 or 3 week stay in France/Italy in the summer - Eurocamp or apartment - always self-catering. Most years we go somewhere Easter or Autumn Half term or both. That could be Centerparcs or abroad somewhere. Last year we went to Rome for a week. This year dh and I did a city break on our own at Easter. A few UK weekends visiting friends and family.

Notso · 01/06/2018 15:08

Once a year usually, though we have skipped a couple of years when we had newborns, moved house etc.
I am not really bothered about holidays too much, I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with them. If left up to me we'd just do a few short breaks, but the kids love sun, beaches and pools.
BIL, his wife and kid go three or four times a year to various AI resorts, they think we're odd for not wanting to do the same.

MarshaBradyo · 01/06/2018 15:08

Last year we had three holidays which was really nice

This year it will probably be the same although for the first half we had to stay in the UK

witchofzog · 01/06/2018 15:17

Usually 7-10 night to Greece, Turkey or Spain in May and then the same Sept / October. Being able to go off peak means I can afford 2 holiday.

I will also usually manage a mini break or 2 throughout the year. Usually an air bnb or normal bnb in Wales or a city break.

I didn't get on a plane until I was 30 and didn't have a holiday of any type in at least 12 years from 18 years old to probably 31 so I am making up for lost time now Smile

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 01/06/2018 15:20

1 in half 4 years.

Hoping soon every year to two years, depending on finances/school etc.

crazymumofthree · 01/06/2018 16:31

We haven't been abroad for 5 years. However whilst the children have been younger do cottage holidays once a year, we come back every year to a place in Cornwall we love! (Currently here actually!!) and then we try and do another one or two weekends away, we have done New forest, Isle of Wight etc. The week away costs us between £800-1000 plus spending money and a weekend away is more like £300-500 so probably about £2000-3000 a year which sounds like loads!! Now the children are a bit older we are hoping to go abroad - I have been looking at 3/4 night stays abroad and they are coming in at about £300-500 also so the same as UK prices! I also would like to do Florida in a couple of years so for us that might mean missing a year of holidays to save up!

Amanduh · 01/06/2018 16:35

I’d say every body I know in my family and close friends has at least one a year. We do one holiday, sometimea a city break as well and a couple of nights in the uk

blackteaplease · 01/06/2018 16:39

At the moment while we have young kids and a lot of childcare to pay all we manage is 2 weeks camping in France at a cheap and cheerful campsite.

amusedbush · 01/06/2018 16:43

Two or three times a year - always overseas. Usually European city breaks but we do go to New York almost annually and I never get bored of it Grin

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 01/06/2018 16:44

One 2 week holiday with just our family. One week away with DH's siblings in October. PIL are very generous (ie they pay) and love to see all the cousins together, otherwise we wouldn't prioritise a second holiday. Dh & I will usually have a weekend away individually with friends but don't class those as holidays.

Snowysky20009 · 01/06/2018 16:49

Went away April, going away in a few days then going away again in August. All abroad. Similiar every year.

user1471453601 · 01/06/2018 16:52

Twice a year, to the same place in greece.. For four weeks\may June (I'm there now) and three weeks in September. I'm my defence, when I was a young single mum one week in a caravan in cleethorpes was a treat. Now DD is all grown up, she looks after dear dog while I do the galavanting. It's grand

Aragog · 01/06/2018 16:52

4-5 times a year. We are very lucky, I know. It's something we spend much of our disposable income in and specifically have a saving account for holidays.

Normally a couple of long haul and a couple of short haul. One of them will be a fortnight, the others a week. Due to exams for dd, this year one of them was only 4 days. We will have some weekends away too, but only one or two nights and in the UK.

Hollipopsmum · 01/06/2018 20:57

Holidays are my vice. We usually do 4-6 a year - last year we did Lisbon city break, Easter week in Holland, 2 weeks in Croatia in summer, week in Italy in October and weekends in Jersey and Dundee and a wee sneaky kids free trip to Malta with DH. I am an avid bargain hunter though - flights to Lisbon were £140 for 4 of us. Since dd1 started school we seem to have got into a holiday every school holiday habit. I have no other hobbies / expensive interests just love spending time with the family without all the daily grind crap.

Barbaro · 01/06/2018 21:14

Haven't had a proper week long holiday abroad since 2003 ish. Finally going away in August to Germany. I did go to Italy in 2008, but only for a weekend.

JeezYouLoon · 02/06/2018 06:08

Pre DCs we never had a holiday, DH was self employed and we just couldn't afford for him not to be at work. We just had the odd night away in the UK.

Now we have DCs and DH isn't as tied to work we tend to go away 3 times a year. In laws live abroad in winter so very generously pay for us to visit them, then we do a week self catering in the UK, then depending on deals we try and get into another two sneaky two long weekend/midweek breaks in. Somewhere like a Premier Inn near a leisure complex with DCs and one Groupon deal for me and DH in a posh hotel, or we'll just ring round last minute and see what we can haggle Wink

I love going away as everything in term time is so regimented, I work full time and so have to be super organised. I can cope with the daily grind if I have a holiday at the end to look forward to/plan.
