Most people I know haven't had a holiday in years

OP posts:
Xmasfairy86 · 31/05/2018 22:36

A week abroad every other year. Sometimes that’s a 2 week holiday, but the cost is astronomical now it’s purly school holidays.

In the non abroad year, we try for a week/long weekend in the Uk. Fortunate to have 2 static caravans on the coast that my dad owns and can have free of charge of empty (currently in one now!)

mindutopia · 31/05/2018 22:37

We go away for the weekend several times a year. By that, I mean Airbnb cottage somewhere relaxing with a few fun activities for the kids. My dh’s family also has a beach hut that you can overnight in. We go there every summer for a few days (owned by all of us so it’s free). Dh and I individually have a weekend break or two a year with friends or alone (I love to travel by myself, went to Barcelona last year for 2 nights, it was grand). But actual big family holiday for a week or two, no, never done it. My dh and I used to before kids, but not since as it’s a bit OTT and expensive and doesn’t sound as fun as a few weekend breaks. We did visit my family for 2 weeks last year though (first time we’ve done that since dc were born). I’m not originally from the UK so technically it does involve a stupidly expensive long haul flight. If you met my family though, you wouldn’t necessarily consider it a holiday!!

Minimum three a year. Skiing in winter/early spring. Summer holiday then a week of winter sun. Trying to make the most of it before kids are school age

MiggeldyHiggins · 31/05/2018 22:37

holidays abroad with children, going anywhere (other than their own back gardens) can be the experience from hell

I suppose they can be for some. Some of us love them though and don't find them remotely hellish.

Godotsarrived · 31/05/2018 22:39

Two week family holiday once a year. A week away with my friend at least once some times twice a year and a few odds and sods weekends. Couldn’t live without my trips.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 31/05/2018 22:39

Three or four long weekends, at least twice in a caravan for 5 or 7 days, but only had a week abroad once every 3 or 4 years. We do go to Germany most Christmases for a few days. We tend to go outside popular times or on Sun £9.50 holidays so it's reasonably cheap.

leccybill · 31/05/2018 22:40

Usually 1 or 2 fortnights abroad plus 3 UK breaks and several weekends away. I love holidays! We're actually on one right now- caravan in UK, it's been brilliant.

Raven88 · 31/05/2018 22:41

Twice a year to Cyprus two weeks at a time.

headintheproverbial · 31/05/2018 22:41

Usually 2 x 2 week holidays abroad. Another week or two in the UK visiting family or weekends away.

AnnabelleLecter · 31/05/2018 22:43

Abroad-
Long haul
Cruise
European city break

UK-
City break
Country hotel break
Couple of festivals
Rest of holidays and about every other weekend at our holiday cottage.

AlbaAlba · 31/05/2018 22:43

Usually 3 times a year within Europe, for a week or 2 weeks, and a couple of long weekends/half-terms in an AirBnB or rented cottage somewhere. With family abroad and shared holiday houses we only have to pay for the travel itself. We're very lucky. For first time in years have booked holiday accommodation for the long hols and it's so expensive.

Skiing is the most expensive trip, as even with no hotel costs, the lessons and rental for the DC adds up. Other holidays we just potter, do sport etc. So no expensive resorts.

Never go long haul. Do enough of that for work, no desire to drag the DC long haul.

butlerswharf · 31/05/2018 22:44

2-3 a year but they are only 1 week each.

ghostyslovesheets · 31/05/2018 22:44

this year we are camping twice (over long weekends)
Going to France Eurocamping in July
doing a Haven coupons out of the local paper £50 weekend in Oct

not really OTT

willstarttomorrow · 31/05/2018 22:44

We have 2 abroad holidays a year but on a budget. I am a lone parent and do not really go out so this is my luxury. When DH was alive we used to travel a lot so DD is really used to it and is uncomplaining in the form our holidays take. This summer I have found very cheap flights to Sofia so we are heading to a mountain resort and then staying in an apartment in a 5* resort with a small water park for a week at a cost of £250. No cheap flights back so we are then going to Skopje by bus, staying overnight in an amazing spa hotel for £50 before getting a night train to Belgrade. We then have 4 nights in a nearby spa town before getting a £10 flight to Berlin. Two nights there then home. Cheaper than a bloody static in the UK in August and we will have sun.

TimeToDash · 31/05/2018 22:48

Usually only one 2 or 3 week hol abroad a year but about 3-4 mini trips in the caravan I twisted my husband's arm to get!

QueenOfMyWorld · 31/05/2018 22:49

Last year 3 times abroad, this year will be 1 this coming December

CountFosco · 31/05/2018 22:49

To make everyone feel better the last time DH and I were abroad was 2005 when we went to Ireland prechildren. Our main holiday each year is visiting my family for 2 weeks and DH takes the kids to visit his family a couple of half terms a year. We sometimes have a long weekend away, last one was a trip to Northumbria with my Mum this time last year. Otherwise all annual leave is taken up by DH and I taking separate leave to cover as much of the school holidays as possible (in-service days are the killer because there's no holiday clubs for those odd days) and hospital visits (DC3 has a chronic condition that include a few days stay in hospital every year plus regular consultant appointments). We've never had a family holiday that was just the 5 of us. DH and I both have good salaries but we are scrambling about for annual leave as it is. It's shit.

bellsbuss · 31/05/2018 22:50

2 holidays abroad , one with children and one without. 4 U.K. short breaks with children. 2 weekend hotel breaks just the 2 of us plus regular breaks in our static with the children

IggyAce · 31/05/2018 22:51

This year we had 3 nights in a caravan in Northumberland at Easter.
A night away in York for my significant Birthday.
We will be spending a week in north wales in a lodge with hot tub in August.

RJnomore1 · 31/05/2018 22:54

Every year varies for us but this year

10 days in Caribbean for us 10 in Italy skiing for dd in February
Week in Yorkshire in July
Short break to Manchester August
Leeds festival late August
Ibiza for a week in October

Considering Disneyland Paris at (just before) Christmas but not booked yet.

BBCONEANDTWO · 31/05/2018 22:56

I'm jealous of you all - when I go on holiday it's to a campsite - went last year but not going this year.

Brainfogmcfogface · 31/05/2018 22:57

Just back from my first holiday in 3 years (butlins so not exotic at all) Was only away for 4 days but I had to save hard for it and had the best time, loved every second. Has given me an itch to go away again but sadly will probably be the same wait until the next time we can have another one. Meh such is life with pretty much no disposable income 🤷‍♀️

SandyY2K · 31/05/2018 22:58

Usually once a year out of the country with DH and the kids. Sometimes we have a UK break as well. I don't personally consider it a holiday if I don't leave the country... so I call it a break.

happymummy12345 · 31/05/2018 23:02

I haven't had one in years

TitsalinaBumsquat · 31/05/2018 23:07

Almost never, can’t afford it. We had 4 days in Torquay in 2016 and before that 4 days in Copenhagen in 2010 (a present). Other than that I’ve had no holidays since I lived at home with my parents!
