Most people I know haven't had a holiday in years

OP posts:
onemouseplace · 31/05/2018 22:18

Nowhere near as much as most of my friends, who seem to be away every school holiday! We try and get away at least once a year for a week for a family holiday and maybe manage a long weekend as well? DH is a contractor though, so any time away feels very expensive in terms of lost income.

Iamclearlyamug · 31/05/2018 22:19

either 4 or 5 times, this year it's 5 - 2 weeks in Feb, 1 week in April, 10 days in July, a week in September and a final 2 weeks in November

have to hold up my hands and admit that I only pay for flights since I'm visiting my partner, so the cost is much lower than the average holiday abroad

YouTheCat · 31/05/2018 22:19

Great aunt's caravan in Warkworth in 1983.

beluga425 · 31/05/2018 22:20

We be slowed down a bit this year but was a holiday every six weeks. Pretty much all disposable income.

Hellsbellscockleshells · 31/05/2018 22:21

10-14 days abroad in summer and two or three localish camping weekends with the kids and dog. DH and I usually manage 24 hours away in a nice hotel per year courtesy of my kind godmother but we rarely go out together.

DeathlyPail · 31/05/2018 22:23

2 long haul per year here usually plus maybe some weekend breaks in the UK or a sneaky week in Europe.

DH is overseas loads for his job and gets more holiday than most, I have a reasonable allowance, disposable income and grown up kids.

Having said that we had a shared many holidays when they were young too.

My life experiences have taught me to grab life with both hands and enjoy it now as you don’t know what’s around the corner for you.

I’m certainly not saving my travelling for my retirement years

Seniorcitizen1 · 31/05/2018 22:24

Three holidays abroad each year - 1 week spring 3 week summer 1 week autum - plus long weekends away at country hotels. High powered very well paid job so need breaks to prevent burn out

arethereanyleftatall · 31/05/2018 22:25

Too often. Each year - South Africa for 3 weeks, 2 weeks skiing, 2 weeks summer holidays in Spain/France, 1 week dh boys holiday, 1 week me girls holiday, camping about 3 times per year, a few long weekends weddings/stags, then maybe one more random one week family holiday somewhere. I know this sounds a bit 'my diamond shoes are too tight' - but it stresses me out, I'd prefer to do less, but rest of my family like it.

Fabricwitch · 31/05/2018 22:25

Usually 3 week long holidays abroad. And as many weekends away visiting friends and relatives as we can.

BlueJava · 31/05/2018 22:25

Usually one long haul 3 week holiday with another one or two 1 week holidays somewhere else. Plus about 3 weekends away in a year. As a family we love travelling and tbh I make sure we do it a lot as the 2 DS still want to come with us and they won't forever.

chickydoo · 31/05/2018 22:26

Once a year for 2 weeks in the summer. France or Greece.
My Work takes me abroad a couple of times a year, not a holiday but I manage a day off here and there to see the sights.

MiggeldyHiggins · 31/05/2018 22:26

ten days in Europe every summer, then a long weekend either in our own country or in London etc later on. Next year New York though!

SexyManatee · 31/05/2018 22:27

3 times per year, probably for a total of 6/7 weeks. Kids are grown up though, this wasn't the case when they were with us.

keyboardkate · 31/05/2018 22:28

I dislike this kind of competiteveness re anything really. Who fkn cares?

It all depends on personal circumstances even if you have the means, talking ill parents, children and other stuff etc.

It is just a forum for showing off IMO.

Nobody cares about your holidays. Really they don't,provided your hols are of a lesser degree than theirs!

MN at its finest.

Not been since 2007 Confused

OakIsBetterTho · 31/05/2018 22:29

As a couple, DP and I don't realky. In 3 years we've had one weekend away in the Cotswolds and one weekend visiting family across the country. We're saving to buy a house and due to his job, he doesn't really have time off. If he does, it's mid winter and very short notice and only really two days at the most (the very most!)
I try to go away for weekends with my friends every 3 months or so. Keeps me sane ha! A weekend in bath, a weekend in Bristol, a weekend in Cornwall... it still feels like a proper break even tho it isn't a big holiday!

somewhereovertherain · 31/05/2018 22:29

Couple or three a year usually one long haul then a week elsewhere and a few weekends depends what’s going on.

pieceofpurplesky · 31/05/2018 22:31

It's just me and DS and we go away quite a lot. Last year we went to America, Iceland and three times to Europe plus a few UK wekkends. We are lucky to have friends in great places like Madrid and always do a house (and dog) swap at some point in the year.
Have yet to plan where to go in the summer. The money comes from the fact I live a dull life every other week of the year and work
My arse off as a full time teacher and also tutor four evenings per week.

OhCheersForThat · 31/05/2018 22:31

Reliant on DHs money coming in, as he is self employed and my salary wouldn’t cover much!

Some years we have done multiple, amazing trips.

Last year we went to Paris at Easter, Japan early summer and Spain late summer holidays, then rented a holiday home on the south coast of England over Christmas.

This year things are a bit leaner. We went to Croatia for a wedding recently and are visiting relatives in Brighton/ camping in Suffolk over the summer. Hoping for a week of winter sun at Christmas but depends on how things shape up financially.

We love travelling, but even when there are years we can’t afford foreign travel we will camp or visit friends for a few days around the country. Need the break!

BlitheringIdiots · 31/05/2018 22:32

Three 1-week holidays plus weekends away. We don't have hobbies and love our holidays

RaininSummer · 31/05/2018 22:32

I haven't been abroad for about twenty years now and also have only had the odd couple of days away in this country. Luckily I live somewhere gorgeous to don't feel too hard done by. I find actual holidays too expensive a nd when I h ave my leave in august, I quite like to potted about in the house and garde n with day trips out.

TrickyD · 31/05/2018 22:33

Just booked a holiday in Mauritius today for next February . Looking forward to cruising from Budapest to Amsterdam next month , then taking family to the Dominican Republic at the end of July. Short cruise to Rouen in October, Cruise to Norwegian fiords in May. Probably a ski trip for DH and DSs in January. We are retired so enjoying ourselves while we can. Logic of this policy was reinforced by my being fitted with a Pacemaker three weeks ago.

keyboardkate · 31/05/2018 22:34

Also, and I may be in a tiny minority here... holidays abroad with children, going anywhere (other than their own back gardens) can be the experience from hell.

Been there done that. Not anymore!

Cleanermaidcook · 31/05/2018 22:36

1 big abroad holiday a year (sometimes every 2 years if we can't afford it )
1 camping holiday in England
And couple of long weekends away as a family
2/3 overnight spa breaks for me and friend.

DrCoconut · 31/05/2018 22:36

Hoping to manage a couple of nights away in the summer holidays. My circumstances have changed so much that I can't really afford holidays for now.
