Most people I know haven't had a holiday in years

Useally 2 weeks long haul Caribbean / Mexico / USA one week in Spain Italy or France etc and a couple of weekend breaks Amsterdam or vermin or Bruges. Also try to do a couple of weekends round the uk. Xx

peoplearemean · 31/05/2018 23:15

As often as I can!

Typically;

1 x family holiday abroad to Spain / canaries

1 x uk week in Devin

1 x girly weekend abroad

1 x uk weekend to a theme park

Hoping to add Disneyland in for a bonus as well!

Holidays are a major priority for us. We aren’t tied to school holidays, so we always go off-peak, which is much cheaper, obv.

We usually take 3 x 1 week holidays or if we’re doing long haul 1 x 2 week and 1 x 1 week.

We also get away separately, DP with his mates to do his hobbies and me often on my own doing something which interests me.

I know this sounds like a lot of holidays. It is, and we are fortunate, but travel is our hobby. It’s how we choose to spend a big chunk of our disposable income. Other people probably spend a lot more on clothes, shoes, bags, electronic gadgets, Christmas, hair & beauty, interior decor etc etc than we ever would.

Itsallpropaganda · 31/05/2018 23:47

Varies year to year. Last year we went about 6 times but they were short city breaks plus a couple of one night away weekends. This year we have done a two week long haul and plan a week abroad in the autumn but will fit in a couple of weekends as well. Much easier without school holidays to worry about (and cheaper!)

WaitrosePigeon · 31/05/2018 23:48

Once a year, all inclusive thing for a week.

LeMesmer · 31/05/2018 23:55

Usually one week around Easter, often Italy, then 2 weeks end of August, usually France or Switzerland. For the past 7 years I have taken DS on a few days city break at some point during the year. Very occasionally a long weekend somewhere. We live in France though, so travel costs are minimal, and usually stay in cheapish self catering.

blueshoes · 31/05/2018 23:57

keyboardkate: Also, and I may be in a tiny minority here... holidays abroad with children, going anywhere (other than their own back gardens) can be the experience from hell.

I assume your children are still very young. I felt like you too. But they get older all too soon and become much much easier. At 14 and 11 are funny and really good company. Hang in there.

RedDwarves · 31/05/2018 23:58

We do domestic holidays (within Australia) a couple of times a year, but are fortunate in that we live in the place want to be which is a holiday destination for many (ski fields here).

We do an international holiday about every year. We did the UK in December 2017, and are doing New Zealand in February 2019. We plan to do a US road trip in mid-late 2020.

FASH84 · 01/06/2018 00:01

Up to now four times a year abroad twice for a week to two weeks, twice for 4/5 days, city breaks etc. Then once or twice UK, again long weekends etc. DC1 is on the way so this is undoubtedly a thing of the past.

blibblibs · 01/06/2018 00:02

We're having our first 2 week family holiday this year and DC are 9 & 10!
We did however live abroad for a year which was hot and kind of like a very long holiday Grin
This year we've had a long weekend back there, our 2 week hol in summer, a long weekend break in UK without DC and I'm hoping to fit a trip to London in for us all in October half term.
I think we are very lucky having all of those but it's small fry compared to some here.

brieislife · 01/06/2018 00:03

Last year nothing. This year we had 3 days in Whitby in February staying at my mum’s friend’s holiday cottage for next to nothing.
Now my husband has a job hopefully next year we can afford to for him to go to the US for a week or so to visit his family. I doubt we’ll afford for us both to go.

MrsPotatoHeadIsMyIdol · 01/06/2018 00:08

8 times last year - all budget airline city breaks though. The year before was 2 city breaks plus New York. I don't have any children though. I've saved the past year to go travelling Asia and New Zealand, but this is a working
Holiday to top up funds or I wouldn't be able to afford the Asia trip

MrsPotatoHeadIsMyIdol · 01/06/2018 00:09

I also try to get away for Glastonbury every year if I can get a ticket. It's magicalGrin

ChameleonsInCarsGettingCoffee · 01/06/2018 00:10

We've been averaging about 3 holidays plus 2-3 weekends away each year.

The three holidays were all in the UK, totalling up to the £1200 a year budget we set.

We're making the most of term time prices before DC start school. The budget won't go far in school holiday time!

Thesearepearls · 01/06/2018 00:22

The older I get, the less I like going away. I miss the dog and I fret about the garden. This being said, 2018 has brought/will hopefully bring:

Citybreak 3 nights in Venice
A week in Greece visiting friends/family
Two weeks in France, in a hill village in Provence
DH is going to Jersey for a week (I haven’t got the leave)
Two weeks in Ethiopia

DD will come to France, has been skiing and is going to Turkey for a week with her boyfriend

DS will come to France, is going to Croatia for a week and then has a trip to China over the summer. He has a hobby that involves tours. These aren’t holidays per se.

So this sounds all a bit self-indulgent but it’s mainly friends and family.

liz70 · 01/06/2018 00:24

Week to ten days in April, two weeks in July plus the odd weekend hotel break.

Kolo · 01/06/2018 00:25

Since having kids, all of our holidays tend to be either camping or visiting family/friends. We go away quite often, but quite cheaply. We have family/friends in 4 different countries that we try to visit yearly for a few days. Last year we did maybe 5 camping trips, Denmark (family), Wales (friends), France (friends, but drove so we could extend our stay stopping along the way). We usually visit my dad who emigrated, but couldn’t afford all the flights in school holidays last year. I consider myself very lucky to be able to go away so much, because we have family and friends to stay with which really keeps the cost down. Camping is pretty cheap too; we’ve just come home from 5 days camping which cost the 4 of us £150.

PrincessoftheSea · 01/06/2018 00:35

A main 2 week holiday where we usually go abroad in August and 2-3 city breaks abroad throughout the year. I also usually have a city break away with my girlfriends. The children also have school trips. Holidays is what we spend most of our disposable income on.

SoleBizzz · 01/06/2018 00:39

...

Wimbledonwomble · 01/06/2018 01:01

Twice usually. A cheapy Sun newspaper UK break at Easter and a main holiday abroad in the Summer. Recent destinations include Spain, the US & Mexico.

AlonsosLeftPinky · 01/06/2018 01:08

I tend to have a skiing holiday in January or February, a week away early May, main holiday in June, a week away in September and usually we go away for Xmas, can be either winter sun or skiing.

Poorlooloo · 01/06/2018 02:25

We have a static caravan by the coast we go to every month or so

I have friends abroad that I visit at least twice a year

HappyEverIftar · 01/06/2018 03:57

Quite a bit as we live abroad and DH gets back to see his kids in the UK for half terms, summer holidays etc. We do try and have a few days to ourselves for our anniversary or my bday which are quite close together.

LaurieMarlow · 01/06/2018 05:22

Probably 2 of at least a week, to Europe/US, plus a long weekend. Usually a ski trip too, but last few years that's been DH on his own rather than family.
