Most people I know haven't had a holiday in years

OP posts:
citychick · 01/06/2018 06:04

Currently living in SE Asia.
Christmas was Cambodia and Vietnam.
Easter was Macau
Summer will be a week in koh Samui.
Then UK.
Next Christmas - haven't decided.

Making the most of living where we do.
When we lived in UK it was a week for a sunny European holiday and the rest of the time at granny's house.

I'd go skiing every year but haven't for a while. DH doesn't ski.

I do love holidays. Even UK based ones.

Mummadeeze · 01/06/2018 06:29

Spent a week in Channel Islands ( lovely holiday but cheap because visiting family) at Easter. Went away for one night last bank holiday weekend in England to beach town. Have booked two weeks off work in the Summer, one to go to European beach resort (which is unusual and extravagant for us) and other will be at home. Will no doubt have a week in Channel Islands at Christmas (again staying with family). Am lucky my family are welcoming and generous as that gives us a few v nice holidays per year that we couldn’t really afford otherwise.

grasspigeons · 01/06/2018 06:38

We go camping for the weekend several times a year and then go aborad for a week every other year for 10 days in the tent. I'd love to travel more

missmouse101 · 01/06/2018 06:40

Once or twice every 4 years on average. Cannot afford. Always find them overrated tbh. Same daily shit, different location and more aggro with everything being in annoying places!

Zoflorabore · 01/06/2018 06:43

Compared to my family, very little.

2 abroad holidays last year, none this year but going to Haven in Pwllheli instead.

Most people I know don't go on lots of holidays but I really look forward to a week away in the sun and then feel bad when they say that they haven't been anywhere for X amount of years.

alcin · 01/06/2018 06:53

Depends from year to year.

I get told by work when my holidays are so if they don't fall in school holidays we don't go. (Kids go with grandparents occasionally)

Last year I got August so a couple of weeks were spent in Cuba.

This year they are next 2 weeks so can only go somewhere for a week as back to school on the 11th.

gingerh4ir · 01/06/2018 06:59

I haven't been since having DC. oldest is 11 with complex SN and I am on carers allowance. We cannot afford going away at all and DD has never been. but I suppose we are a bit of an extreme case because of disability (and poverty that often comes with it). most of my friends have 2 proper holidays a year.

FriendlyOcelot · 01/06/2018 07:04

We have recently managed to get away for a couple of hols per year - one in summer, one over a half term. Usually it will be two European trips, (one might be a city break. I love the referrals throughout this to ‘cheap city breaks’ - I wish Grin) or one long haul and one UK.

They’re always budgeted v carefully though - would love to afford some luxury all inclusive holidays but we have a mortgage to pay!

totorosumbrella · 01/06/2018 07:09

Usually one short week in centre Parcs and two weeks in France.

Pre dc we used to fly all over the place. Sigh.

Polarbearflavour · 01/06/2018 07:11

One week away in summer further afield.
At least two City breaks in Europe over long weekends.

CPtart · 01/06/2018 07:30

This year Iceland in January, Lanzarote in Feb, Portugal in August and looking at Southern Spain for October. We also have a long weekend camping with the IL's in July. Plan to go long haul again when we've offloaded the DC in a few years. Luckily we have no mortgage.

Silvertap · 01/06/2018 07:53

Wow some of these are amazing!

We try to do one week away abroad - since kids it's been a sunshine all inclusive but we've booked skiing for next yeAr.

We have a caravan that we do one week away and one or two weekends if we can in this country. Normally involving visiting friends or family.

I thought we were rather extravagant but compared to some of these we're not at all!

jetsetter87 · 01/06/2018 07:57

Go abroad at least 1x each year this year is two weeks in Spain
Dh and I have a few city breaks but this year staying in uk

Next year I'm booked for 3 holidays abroad no city breaks as of yet
Trip with girlfriends to Spain 1 week
Trip with family to Spain 1 week
Family holiday to Turkey 2weeks

Nodancingshoes · 01/06/2018 07:59

We've been abroad twice since having kids but last year and this year its camping in the UK. We invested in a big tent and try to get away 3 or 4 times in the year

MrsJacksonBrodieTheSecond · 01/06/2018 08:00

Quite a lot. Dh gets 5 weeks holiday per year and we tend to go abroad for 4 of them. Normally 2 x Europe, then 1 x further abroad. The remaining week is usually spent visiting his family and going to Center Parcs or similar. We very much prioritise holidays over pretty much everything.

Yogagirl123 · 01/06/2018 08:05

We are have three this year, which is not usual for us. 1 weekend away in Spain just DH & I, 1 week in a cottage in Aug UK family break, 1 week in Canary Islands Dec. Can’t wait!

Justabadwife · 01/06/2018 08:09

I hadn't been on holiday for years, and i'd never been abroad until last year, when I had a week in the sun 🌞🌞

This year's time away looks like this
Weekend away in Durham
Week all inclusive in Spain
Blackpool for 3 days
Me and DH weekend away

cheshiremama89 · 01/06/2018 08:09

This year, one abroad to Mykynos, one to Anglesey to stay in a farmhouse with family and one weekend in the Lakes for my birthday.

We've also had a few nights in London x

tomhazard · 01/06/2018 08:13

We try to go abroad every year. Typically this will be a Greek island or Cyprus in a self catering 2 bed near a beach. This will cost around 2.5k for 4 of us including spending.

Ohcomeonn · 01/06/2018 08:19

Since dd was born we've done a week in Spain all inc/full board end of sept. Different resorts but ended up in Spain because of short flights, good deals and somewhat reliable weather. Not sure what we'll do next year when she starts school.

JaceLancs · 01/06/2018 08:23

2-3 abroad but always budget friendly
Lots of shorter UK trips some long weekends or city breaks
I love to travel
I manage the above on what some friends spend on a single week holiday but am lucky can travel off peak and am only paying for myself as DP, DC and friends pay their own way if we holiday together

PurpleTigerLove · 01/06/2018 08:27

We’ve had three holidays abroad in the last 15 years . Two to Europe and one to the US .
I’ve been away twice with a friend for a long weekend .
We are staying at home this year , I don’t need or want a holiday every year .

GandolfBold · 01/06/2018 08:27

We tend to go away at Christmas and for a couple of weeks in the summer. Then October is DH's birthday so we tend to do a city break then, which we save up air miles and nectar points for so only have to pay spending money for.

BathshebaAndGabriel · 01/06/2018 08:34

Currently in Cyprus. Went to Jordan for Easter. Devon at Feb half term. Will have a week in Cornwall in July. And then Canada for a fortnight in August.
And my husband is talking about Uruguay for October half term.
And we wonder why we’re skint and have zero annual leave left...

MismatchedStripySocks · 01/06/2018 12:41

Last year we had 1 x UK break and 2 x foreign. The same this year. Previous years have varied between 0-3.
