To want to cut my hair very short like Gemma Arterton? (with pics)

I know she is impossibly beautiful and perhaps that haircut would look nothing like that on me. But it looks so bloody amazing and sophisticated on her that I feel really tempted Grin

AIBU to cut my hair so short? Would it look awful on someone not quite as stunning as Gemma?

I had a pixie cut some time ago. People either loved or hated it. I loved it but it was very high maintenance. With a short cut you can’t simply wash and leave it, or put it up. I also had to wear more makeup

Mrsmadevans · 31/05/2018 08:53

YADNBU OP.
In fact I watched in the line of duty and the woman cop in there has the most gorgeous cut .

I don't think it's an interesting hair cut. I think it's her face that makes it.

Try it if you like anyway. It's not a crime looking a bit more ordinary that GA.

Just be realistic about what you can do with your own face.

MsHomeSlice · 31/05/2018 09:03

it sounds like you have the hair for this!

mine is similar, but more asymmetric, longer swoosh of "fringe". I will just say, do't let them cut too many layers or use the thinning scissors....that makes this type of cut floofy, sticky up and very 1970s feather cut

You need the edges/back shaped beautifully and weight in the top to avoid the OlderWomanHasCropToTryToLookTenYearsYounger effect aka Denise Welsh/JaneFonda/Gloria Hunniford with it all pouffed and spiked...no no no!

FindoGask · 31/05/2018 09:09

I'm not a fan of that cut myself. I think it looks a bit half-assed, though of course beautiful on Gemma because she is beautiful anyway. I think that length is better with more shape - more texture at the top and shorter at the back and sides.

I have much shorter hair than that and have been through every short hair style. My favourite was a messy pompadour with shaved back and sides but it was a fucker to style in the morning.

cleofatra · 31/05/2018 09:11

I actually hate this on her as I think it makes her look old.

QueenOfMyWorld · 31/05/2018 09:18

I'm 60 in 10 days. I've had short hair since I was 25. As others say, it's so much easier to maintain and saves a lot of time. I've spent years wondering why having long hair became the norm, because it would drive me mad.

And it's just a haircut. It grows back if you don't like it.

SporkInTheToaster · 31/05/2018 09:23

I would love a pixie but sadly my hairline goes quite far down my neck and so it would end up a bit Billy Ray Cyrus.

Cutesbabasmummy · 31/05/2018 09:24

I have Annie Lennox style hair and it's coloured white blonde too. However, you cant just wash it and leave it. I wash it every morning, blow dry it and the "dress" it with gel wax and hairspray. I love it though and will never go back to longer hair.

Chickoletta · 31/05/2018 09:25

Ask your hairdresser. Mine is very honest about what would look ridiculous on me...!

YoThePussy · 31/05/2018 09:25

I think it looks a lovely haircut. It will take a long time to grow out and probably look shite whilst doing so, so think very hard before you do it.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 31/05/2018 09:41

Can I just chip in? Please don't be fooled into thinking short = low maintenance. They need regular trims to keep looking good and much faffing in the mornings. However, in the 80s (when I could find my cheekbones and pre children) I had mine like Annie Lennox and bloody loved it.

MsJinglyJones · 31/05/2018 09:48

I have a similar haircut, and hair type. I love it, and in fact with fine, straight hair I can't cope with it any longer, so I've almost always had it short. I do have cheekbones but not the rest of GA's face!

Agree with PPs that if I want to look feminine / pretty then I need to wear make-up and more feminine clothes, but I like that look - short hair, lippy and a print dress play off each other and can be more edgy. OTOH I also don't mind having a no make-up, jeans and t-shirt day and not bothering.

I say go for it, because you might love it and never look back.

MsJinglyJones · 31/05/2018 09:52

The maintenance thing varies, it depends on the cut, and your hair type. Short hair needs cutting more often. But my cut is pretty easy to style with a bit of volumising powder and wax, and it dries without a hairdryer in 20 minutes. As my hair is greasy and needs washing every day, it's a lot less hassle when it's short.

But if you have thick or wavy hair that needs taming, or a very precise style, then short hair can be more demanding.

Mousefunky · 31/05/2018 09:55

I wouldn’t do it. I tried a pixie cut a few years ago after destroying my hair with bleach. I have thick curly hair and it looked terrible, the worst part is trying to grow it out. I am young with a heart shaped face and cheekbones but it still wasn’t great and I can suit most hairstyles.

Enko · 31/05/2018 10:04

Op I went for the chop about 18 months ago now. Hair was midway down my back and I had it cut to jaw length I had gone to a really good hair dresser (paid a lot for it I will admit) and watched their staff as I had my highlights done... I quickly honed in on the Owner who really just got how face shapes worked with his hair cuts. So I booked an appointment with him.. Result was a " disconnected" hair style.. (its not the same length on left and right and the front piece is longer than any of the rest of my hair) it looks AMAZING I have had so many compliments on the hair and how much it suits me. (looks a bit like this style not quite as short but not far off)

I know for certain if I had chosen to go to the hairdresser I used before this one I would have ended up with a bob and would have felt a bit " meh"

So for me this is one of the things you need to know you are going to a good hairdresser for. For me i haven't left that particular hairdresser as i think they are fantastic. Hair is easy to care for I add a bit of texturing spray and comb fingers through and off I go.

Frouby · 31/05/2018 10:05

Also how long is your current hair? If it's long go short in stages, that's what I try and do. Then every hair cut is fresh and different.

Alicatz66 · 31/05/2018 10:06

My hair is really short ... it has to be cut every 6 weeks with a trim in between .. my hair is straight and fine .. I've gone full on platinum blonde ... it adds body and as your hair is short it stays in good condition... but short hair isn't easy .., you wake up with full on peaks and horns and will have to wash it every morning ... but fill it full of volume products.. blast it with redken wax blast .. good to go in 5 mins ... go for it !!!!

Enko · 31/05/2018 10:07

Oh Will also add I listened to his advice on what would suit me and my hair style. Didn't just say " cut it all off"

OneStepSideways · 31/05/2018 11:18

Personally I don't like it at all. It looks a bit unkempt, I know it's supposed to but the long sideburn bits and straggly fringe looks like she needs a trim! It would be hard to make it look groomed if you're going to an event or need a professional look for work.

bsbabas · 31/05/2018 11:20

Bf won't let me shave my head and its soo hot. I hate the hairdressers and can't afford it. Whenever I get my head shaved I get loads of compliments and apparently I look like sinead o Connor.

twosillybulls · 31/05/2018 11:22

I have an appointment today to get a cut just like this Smile Can't wait!
So YADNBU!

DarlingNikita · 31/05/2018 11:22

It's not even that short. Mine's shorter.

OP, do you have a hairstylist who you trust with the question 'Would this suit me?' If so, ask them. Or just do it anyway; it'll grow back in next to no time.

Bluntness100 · 31/05/2018 11:32

It's nigh on identical to Hailey croppers, only you know which of the two you'd look more like,,,
