Thrilling subject I know!

Henry has given up the ghost and I don’t want another one. Ideally I don’t want to spend more than £200 but if i’m Told I can’t get anything fab for that price then I could go to £400 at a push. I will see it as an investment Grin We will be living in a 3 bed, mostly carpeted with one set of stairs. No pets.

A domestic appliance repairman told me he hated Dysons - he reckoned they were made with the cheapest plastic parts available and broke easily and were a sod to repai. Which maybe explains why mine fell apart in several places after about 2 years and was too expensive to repair.

gingergiraffe · 30/05/2018 17:59

I can’t understand why people love Henry’s. I have a Henry, but I only use it for clearing up mucky jobs that would ruin my Dyson. It’s heavy and hard work rubbing lots of carpeted areas. With an upright vacuum the beater bar lifts a lot of the dust as you push it along. I’ve never used a cordless but know people who rave about their Shark or Dyson.

MismatchedStripySocks · 30/05/2018 18:03

Love the idea of the Shark that changes into a handheld. How sad am I to get excited about a vacuum?!!

People with dysons gone wrong, if you call dyson and tell them it's overheating and cutting out they will fix it if still within warranty.
This can also happen if you haven't washed the filters so worth doing that if you've not tried it.

Topseyt · 30/05/2018 18:19

I don't actually need a new vacuum cleaner yet, but I admit I am eyeing up cordless models, particularly Vax, which seems to get good write-ups, but I am open to other ideas. Maybe Shark, and Dyson still in with a shout.

londonrach · 30/05/2018 18:23

Avoid and i mean avoid the dyson. The worse most awful so called vacuum in the world. I hear good things about shark and borsh. My parents like their henry. They throw away their dyson as useless and having got one i totally agree. Its abit emperor new clothes. People tell you its good but its rubbish.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 30/05/2018 18:24

I adore my cordless dyson. Bought from their outlet on e bay for a fraction of the usual price so it's even more of a bargain!

londonrach · 30/05/2018 18:25

Im on my three replacement dyson in two years. Customer service had my back and forth. It refuses the er..vacuum! The last one went last week to replaced by a new upgraded one. The guy who replaced it saud hes doing this three or four times a day. They not in the witch report anymore according to my dad

londonrach · 30/05/2018 18:26

Sorry typing whilst toddler on lap...hope you can understand whats ive written

lljkk · 30/05/2018 18:30

Dysons have been (pointlessly too loud!) ok-good (do actually clean carpets) for us but after James Dyson stance on Brexit I am desperate to buy anything else for our next replacement. Relieved to see so many endorsements for Shark.

Neighbour had a Miele for a while & pined until convinced her husband to buy Dyson replacement.

londonrach · 30/05/2018 18:30

@2kids..... im on my third dyson in two years from customer service. My first went back twice to be repaired! It has one fault...it refuses the vacuum!

londonrach · 30/05/2018 18:32

Also i think my filter spent more time being washed and dried then me vacuuming!

fc301 · 30/05/2018 18:32

I run a cleaning company.
The Shark is amazing.
We do have a Henry but only use it for hard floors or sucking up rubble.

PrettyLovely · 30/05/2018 18:34

Yes I cleaned the filter on the dyson but it seems to be a design fault the hole isnt big enough to suck up and gets clogged so easily, cleaning it out is also soo messy, its not worth the agro as the suction is appauling and the amount of usage time for me wasnt enough for my size of house and for having messy kids to clean up after all the time.

PrettyLovely · 30/05/2018 18:36

"Also i think my filter spent more time being washed and dried then me vacuuming!"
Totally agree, I have never been so frustrated with a vacuum cleaner!

PuppetOnAString · 30/05/2018 18:43

The worst I ever owned was a Hoover, it was terrible.

We have inherited a cordless Dyson which is ok but nothing more than an expensive DustBuster. I couldn’t actually vacuum with it.

londonrach · 30/05/2018 18:48

@Pretty. Dh and i hate and i hate dyson but the dyson was a moving in present from mil so we have to accept it. It useless. That filter is on my window ledge drying for days then i use it for 2 seconds and it fails to vacuum. The container from the dust is too small. It clogs and dont get me on the cord and winding it up. Seriously its hard work. I wish my mil hadnt bought us it (from john lewis) but it was a kind moving in gift and as said before we on our third machine. This new one id red. My friend opened the new box etc for me and set it up. So far the less than week old machine is vacuuming but judging by previous ones...i give it a month before i phone customer service! One day we get a proper vaccum...

Wall0ps · 30/05/2018 18:49

I’m VERY excited by this thread. I ordered a Shark online yesterday and it’s getting delivered tomorrow!!

rumpleyrumple · 30/05/2018 18:50

Which shark does everyone have? I'm intrigued...
I have a corded Dyson ball and the cordless animal as well as a gtech Air Ram
Although the current state of my house you wouldn't think it 🙄

PrettyLovely · 30/05/2018 18:53

Just buy another vacuum and hide it when she comes around! @londonrach 😂

PuppetOnAString · 30/05/2018 18:56

I’ve gone back to bagged as I can’t be doing with the dust cloud.

cricketballs3 · 30/05/2018 18:57

Another vote for Shark - tried a few Dysons and they wete rubbish, switched to Vax and was impressed but when the last one gave up went Currys about to purchase another when there was a demonstration from Shark....never buying anything else (my household consists of a springer, 2 DS and a tradesman DH).
The pick up is fantastic, lift away brilliant; it reminds me of the Kirby brilliant vacuum but heavy and expensive in its looks

SluttyButty · 30/05/2018 18:59

Those complaining about cordless Dyson's. It's not just the filter that needs cleaning, you also need to take the floor head apart and unwind/remove any hair that's got tangled up around the edges. If you don't do this then the bar doesn't spin and the motor does overheat.

It's not different to upkeep on any other brand of vacuum. I clean mine out regularly and the problem stops.

I agree on the older stick Dyson's the dustbox is small but the V10 is a total rethink on the earlier models.

Vinotinto78 · 30/05/2018 19:03

Bought a Shark recently after reading some recommendations on here. It's as good as a vacuum gets. Even has headlights should you be fond of hoovering after dark. Previously always had Dyson so it was a risk but I love it. Got it on sale for £150 on Amazon.

bevelino · 30/05/2018 19:03

I have a Shark Liftaway after mumsnet recommendations and I am very happy with it. I have had lots of Dysons in the past and they all lose suction after a while.
